Just because the Japanese version of this has a lot of characters does not mean that the American version is bad, because the roster is not big. Big rosters does not make a game good. It's all about that game play.
I personally still think the Japanese version is better myself because it has pretty much everything the US counterpart had and more. That great AKI gameplay is there, the shootfighting/strike combination feature is introduced, they differentiate the different leagues you compete in via different types of tournaments (some are round-robin, a Japanese tradition), and they introduced the Wrestler Edit mode that became such an iconic staple of the AKI games (and was so far ahead of its time; the AKI games and Fire Pro had that stuff decades before 2K had it.... That's not 2K's fault though, it's just an unbelievably innovative feature). World Tour is great; the only thing that makes it bad is its comparison to the other AKI games around it. On its own, it's a game to last for the ages.

I always played as The Unknown. Back before I knew that he's a real wrestler. Such nostalgia.
To this day the most fun ever I had playing a video game. Even revenge couldn't replicate it. This was fresh.
