Please, PLEASE dont listen to the haters. Keep it real and keep on showing the vulnerability. It helps tremendously. You inspired me to start this channel to help aspiring political scientist, but things haven't gone my way. I did not got in either of the PhD programs I applied and watching your struggles is inspiring and to be honest I know what is like to be stuck on a theses.

Nearly 30 years after receiving a PhD and seven published books later, I can report that the writing process never gets easier. Great video. It perfectly captures the creative process of the historian. Congratulations on the fellowship.

Congratulations on your fellowship, it is well deserved! Also, F the haters. I am a mom, work full time and I am graduating with my undergraduate degree in history and was just accepted to complete my graduate degree in library science and information with a graduate cert in archival studies. I found your page when I started working on my capstone and while it is only 22 pages and not a full dissertation like yours, I took solice in the ups and downs that I also experienced in writing long research papers. You do inspire people, me specifically, and you documenting what you are going through does help others. So continue your hard work and shove it down those haters' throats when you graduate with your PhD!!!

This mentality that being an academic and a PhD student needs to take over your entire life is so toxic and one of the main reasons I almost never post about my own PhD journey. Thank you for being you and for showing how important balance and other hobbies can be. Also, congratulations of the fellowship! So proud and inspired by you always ✨

In graduate school we treated the PhD like a 8-5, M-F job and took weekends off. I think if I worked seven days a week I would have burned out quickly.

  • @Aussieloz1
    @Aussieloz1 8 месяцев назад +4

I worked in theatre years ago as a costume maker, my last job, I ended up working 16-20 hour days for four months, 7 days a week in order to get everything ready for the preview night. I burned out so badly as a result, that I had to take a break, I ended up in retail and never left. I comfort ate, put on a lot of weight and developed depression. I felt like I’d failed. Only recently, did I discover that I have combined ASD and ADHD, so I finally know why I crashed the way I did, I left my job and returned to uni as and am now doing history and archaeology as an undergraduate degree, with the hope that I can move onto a masters or phd in textiles history. I come to your channel when I can, because I want to learn how to work smarter, not harder. Through your channel, I discovered that matcha lattes helped me to get even energy throughout the day, your recommendations on technology have helped me to narrow down the field on what might help me, and your little doggie makes me smile. I’m still trying to navigate my diagnosis and adjust to my new environment with all the skills that I haven’t figured out yet, but if anyone tells you that you aren’t good at what you do, please ignore them and instead read all the comments from people who’ve been inspired by you. It’s easy for people to judge behind a keyboard, but none of them can possibly know you well enough to do so. Congratulations on the fellowship, you’ve definitely earned it!

Boo on the hate comments! I 100% agree with you. Our society needs to change. Living in a constant state of burnout is not a badge of honor. The expectations we place on ourselves and others are inhuman and unreasonable. We only get one life. We only get one body. We need to cultivate both of these things to the best of our ability each day. I appreciate your shift to better work-life balance. You are setting a new, better example and that isn’t easy, but remember that there are thousands of people out there watching and learning from you that not only is balance reasonable, it is possible. Keep doing you, Kaelyn. ❤

Congratulations on the funding 🎉that is really great news! I enjoy your PhD vlogs very much, especially as you are showing all the different sides of PhD life. I am a PhD student myself and also know all these people telling me I have to work 24/7 on the dissertation, but it doesn't make sense at all and I think we are so much more than our PhDs. You are doing a great job here and with everything else! 😊

This 24/7 hard work idea is ridiculous. It is highly present in the classical music field as well, and i'm on a mission to not pass it on to any of my students. You work better when you are efficient during your work time and when you get rest. You're doing an amazing job! You're going through this doctoral journey in one of the healthiest ways I've ever seen!

I have several friends in PhD programs and to my knowledge, none of them are putting in 70+ hours or whatever ungodly amount people expect PhD students to do. To each their own, but I strongly believe balance is key and as you said, it's the journey that's also important and one should enjoy it. I think you are a great inspiration and realistic. There are weeks where you are putting in those heavy hours and other weeks where it's more "chill". I know it's hard, but please don't listen to the haters. You wouldn't have gotten to where you are without all the hard work.
Also, one of my coworkers just started reading lore of the winds so thats cool. I hope you enjoy 😊

Just because other people can't manage their time to be able to take a few minutes to rest, or spend time with family, or read something for enjoyment, doesn't mean that you're not a real PhD student. I think it's WONDERFUL that you can manage your time that way. And you need to be able to take mental breaks for your own health. Besides that, you're showing people that it is possible to find balance. Others may shy away from getting a PhD because they think that all it is is 24/7 reading/studying/writing. You are showing them that it's not. I love watching your videos. [Ah - so Moo likes the English accent, too, huh??? :)] Congrats on the Fellowship, too! See - you can do it! 🎉🎉

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I will never ever understand why people think it’s normal to come on the internet and try to tear down somebody you don’t know… Somebody that you have not invested anything in… They aren’t paying for your education, they aren’t paying your rent, they aren’t feeding you, they didn’t help you come this far, yet they feel the need to say what they think you are or aren’t. Don’t worry Kaelyn, those who matter understand that you are just trying to achieve balance in life, which is a goal for many of us. Keep going girl!

I am just like you. I couldn't focus on only one thing - even a PHD- if I wanted to. And I did work on a doctorate for a time while teaching at a University here in the states; that said, no matter what I have done, I am also a perfectionist and have always had a creative outlet (side business) and I have always been better for it. Those comments stem from jealousy that you actually can do it all. Keep on keeping on.

    Hello!
I am Daniela, a PhD student in Mexico. I have been following you for a few months. I was looking for videos that motivated me for my studies and I really liked your channel, because for me it represents a lot of what you experience when you are a student at this level, where it can feel quite lonely. Something I love about your videos is that you show the ups and downs and that you show yourself looking for references of how other people are doing it because we can feel very lost.
Each person makes our own journey that is never absolute or linear and no one can tell you how to live yours because is not the same for everyone, in the end, although the title is important, the true learning is along the way, the real result is not the document, It's the person :) Congratulations on the funding!

As for people who are dismissive of your place in academia, I get this a lot as I work full time and the majority of my program takes place remotely. The people who behave this way are small-minded and their opinions mean nothing.

I need to get some revisions done for my first first author pub and I feel like my response to comments is not good enough. I just defended last week too so I am pretty burned out. Congratulations on the fellowship! So happy for you! I can't imagine the weight that's been lifted. Thank you for being honest and showing it's OK to take to time rest, we need to remember we aren't machines and need recover time, physically and mentally.. I am literally having one of those evenings right now and I know if I rest I'll be more productive in the morning. I'm also really sad to hear about the negative comments you receive. It's so frustrating how people's negativity can have such an impact. The way you're able to find balance with everything that you do is inspiring in so many ways, and certain people will find it hard to see you achieve something they haven't, i.e. getting your PhD without having sacrificed everything. My favourite parts of this Diss Diaries was definitely your reaction to receiving the fellowship and how your partner came to you to have that moment with you 🥲 I think you're awesome, keeping doing what you're doing and I can't wait to see you succeed.

"Comparison is the thief of joy", as well as "fear kills more dreams than failure ever will. Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will" are two quotes that have helped me a lot.
You're doing wonderful by living YOUR life as you like. Balance is essential for actually LIVING life. If that works for them, good, but you have to do what works for you (LONGTERM). "Life is a marathon, not a sprint", as are any studies for a degree, as I'm sure you know.
Don't be so hard on yourself! You've inspired me, someone who has been crying tears of joy as well as this same sort of self-doubt and worry you spoke about. I haven't found anyone talking about their path in-depth enough for me (someone who's starting from square 1 at 29 years of age) and trying to do everything as fast and affordably as possible. I wish you luck, friend.
Believe in yourself and your abilities! Work on unwinding when you can. I've been doing a lot of Dorsal Vagus Nerve Therapy due to realizing things were still affecting my nervous system. It's been doing wonders in building healthy emotional regulation and releasing guilt for having balance in my life, as well as anxiety, stress, and worry about things that aren't in my control or I at least have limited control over. I hope that helps someone, good luck everyone!

Man, did I feel the first half of this one! My university actually wants to phase out the thesis track, so I have that wonderful blend of imposter syndrome and being stuck in limbo on getting actually started on my master's thesis. There are a few of us digging our heels in, though, so I'm headed to the UK next month to head to the archives! Congratulations on the fellowship! @@KaelynGraceApple I'll be going to the National Archives, the Labour History Archive in Manchester, and the Records Office for Leicestershire (which is easiest because my partner is from Leicester). I'm also going to be trying to shoehorn in some time to go to the Modern Records Centre at the University of Warwick in Coventry if I can. I'm really excited (and a fair bit nervous) about it!

Congratulations, Kaelyn!! I’m so happy for ya! 🎉🙌 I can definitely relate to the post-stress crash that comes after things finally work out that we’ve been working so hard for. I hope you are able to rest and give yourself a good break after such an arduous achievement!
Also! I know I’ve said this to ya before, but I’m SO thankful you’re here carving out spaces for us to learn from each other and engage across countries and disciplines- either on YT or over at Accepted. I’m sorry people have tried to tear you down because of their own difficulties, but the visibility offered by being able to witness others’ academic journeys really does matter, especially for those of us who don’t have context or prior experience/access in higher education to know what to expect or how to even imagine the possibility of grad school. 🤗

Congratulations Kaelyn! 🥳 Also can I say how much I enjoy seeing you live a bit more of a balanced life now (at least that’s the feeling I get from your content). Academia is hard as it is without haters on the internet, I’m so sorry you have to deal with that. Your content and Accepted Society has helped me so much in terms of feeling less lonely on this PhD student journey, thank you!

The haters are always louder in our heads than the supporters. Being a well-balanced, authentic human doing things that you love while working on your Ph.D. is going to trigger people's over-worked, boot-strap mentality. Try not to let strangers offloading their projections and shame get into your head too much. It's their shit, not yours. Return to sender. You inspire me, and I'm sure others, to find a better balance. RUclips and running online businesses while working on a Ph.D. is admirable and NOT easy. The fact that you do it all should be commended. Congrats on all you've accomplished! Love from NYC ❤

I am so glad for you about your fellowship! 🙂 Congratulations!🎉Although history is absolutely not my cup of tea, I am interested in your journey with Phd and understand how hard you need to work for it, because during my MA in London I struggled with a huge volume of reading and writing for the Degree. So hard, to my way of thinking, does not necessary mean the amount of time, but skill to go deep into the theme.

Hi Kaelyn. Found your videos last year, we are at about the same stage in our PhD. I also went to 2YC and transferred, and I get a lot of inspiration and motivation from watching your journey. Academia is filled with people with toxic work habits that try to project them onto you. I have mental health struggles that make my work week look very different from my peers. Its been hard for me to understand that working longer is not necessarily working better. Anyway, It helps that my goals are different from theres. I do not want to teach at an R1 school, I want to make my discipline more accessible to underrepresented students. That is what you do for me, and I'm so proud of your accomplishments within and beyond your PhD, and am grateful that you share the less aesthetic side of being a professional and a student. Long comment, but I've been watching for a while and it was overdue.

Congratulations that is fabulous. A little bit of advice, I am 44 years old and can absolutely quarantee that no matter what you do you will not escape the haters. There will always be someone who says you are doing it wrong or you are not fitting the mould. You do not need to ignore it or block it out, you need to remember that they aren't you, they aren't on your journey and they don't matter. Also, do not justify yourself via any medium to people you don't actually know or who don't have any real impact on your life. ❤

Don’t listen to the haters! I’ve worked full time for most of my PhD journey and even though I managed to do it, it often felt like a huge cost to my mental and physical health. I applaud you for making big shifts in your life this past year to bring balance to your life and enjoy time with London Boy, your friends, and being a content creator. Your joy shines through in ways that it didn’t when you were working endlessly at Yale. Congrats on the fellowship too! I hope you celebrate and push past the imposter syndrome because we all have moments when it creeps up.

I have also gone through lots of schooling and everyone does it their own way for success. I received my MD and I’m pretty sure that no one would expect that I had a life adjacent to all of the hard work. I was able to study hard and smart, have fun with friends, exercise, and make time for reading or watching a show. In residency I had two babies and breastfed them both without a problem. It was a lot and exhausting at times but when your partner is supportive and you understand how to balance the different aspects of your life, it’s actually a great pathway to take.
So, don’t listen to the hateful comments, just ignore them. Just because they have to do the work a different way doesn’t make it any more legitimate than your work. Hang in there. You are stronger than you think and I was crying right along with you finding out what is to come! Congratulations on all your hard work.

I'm sorry that you've experienced so many hate comments. I see you putting so much of yourself into your work, whether that is your businesses or your Ph.D. studies. I am inspired each time I watch one of your vlogs. I am personally blessed that you are sharing your Ph.D. journey. Please know that there are those of us who are inspired by your journey and who are likewise seeking to do quality work alongside you. In fact, I've managed to get more Ph.D. work done since I found your channel a few weeks ago. Your content gives me the push to put in the time and see some results, even if they are small ones. If your videos touch only a few, then they are still worth it.
