PhD is so much harder than a full time job because you completely own every project and you have no other team member to rely on as everyone is struggling under the weight of their own project. There is just so much uncertainty and work. You are allowed to feel this overwhelmed. Order some nice food. Get through tomorrow's class then take the afternoon off and get back to it in the evening. You've got this!

You are probably burned out. You start to lose interest in what you love. At this point, you need a break, and that is okay. Use your break time to fully connect with your support system (family, friends, and God). Make sure you believe and trust that everything will be alright. I have been there before, so do not feel you are the problem. The process is very difficult. You got this girl. You are truly inspiring many. And I appreciate the fact that you shared the challenging part. So people do not think it is all roses.

Vee this is a common way to feel when doing a PhD! It is a marathon, not a sprint. It's also fine not to be 100% sure about your dissertation topic. I will be graduating in May after doing a PhD for 6 years and I still have no idea if my dissertation topic makes sense or is important to anyone else. My favorite piece of PhD advice is "the BEST dissertation is a COMPLETED dissertation". Your main job at this stage is to get broad knowledge of the different research areas in your field and get training in research methodology. Please don't feel like your dissertation topic will define your entire future. You need to finish A dissertation, to get your PhD. Other things, like publishing articles and the network you make during your PhD, have a much bigger impact on what your post-PhD future will be. I think your resume as it stands has already set you up for mega success, but if you haven't yet, join the Comparative and International Education Society and attend their annual conference and network with their special interest groups. Be gentle with yourself. It will take longer than you think, but you can do it if this is what you decide you want to do.

Well said. Figuring out a dissertation topic is not a swing to hit Goliath. It takes time and patience till everything unravels.

    • @mestiza1988
      @mestiza1988 7 месяцев назад

@@maneskinnnnn7190 Every program or university is different. There are also differences by country. My PhD is in linguistics and I did it in the US, but my masters degree was done in one year in the UK. The first two years of my US PhD were for classes. After this you take a comprehensive exam, then you have an oral proposal hearing for your independent research project. Once your proposal is approved, then you start fieldwork for your independent research project. PhD programs in the US tend to be longer than elsewhere. There are pros and cons to this I think. Pros: More time to work on getting papers published. Cons: If you have no funding or your funding ends after 4 years, you will have to work and do research/write up the research, which is stressful and tricky, but not impossible. Your methodology and data collection will also determine how long your PhD will take. If you are spending a year in the field doing an ethnography (which is common in my program) then it will take 5-6+ years. If you are working with data that someone else collected and just doing a new kind of analysis, then this would be a much shorter project and the PhD can be done in 3-4 years. I transferred as many credits as I could from my UK Masters to cover the class requirements in my PhD, but with the pandemic and schools being closed it still took 6 years. Without the pandemic I might have been able to complete my degree in 5 years.

Regardless of discipline, professional experience, or even coming in with a master's degree. The first year just sucks and involves a lot of crying. I almost quit multiple times my first year lol. Hello! Same experience here. First year was AWFUL! So depressing, so lonely, so overwhelming. It took me a year to understand how my brain works, what I found stimulating, create tangible small goals and have a life outside of my PhD. The second year was sooo much better. Hang in there, you got this! Personally, as someone who enjoys team work and practical stuff, I found freelance work really helped me during the first year: social connection, easily achievable goals (hence a sense of accomplishment). Best of luck!

The year before your submission year is the worst. The first is pretty bad in terms of feeling lost or overwhelmed because you worrry you might not be good enough. But everyone keeps reminding you that this is normal and everyone feels this. In the penultimate year you start feeling it all over again but this time others start agreeing with you. Your university doesn't want you to submit and fail, if you're having serious doubts they will encourage you to drop out or prove you're up to it. The reality is that if you've made it to the penultimate year you can do it. It's the same as 1st year anxiety but people are less nice about it.

You're only 6 months in, the best advice I would give is to EMBRACE these feelings, the uncertainty. The vast majority of 1st year PhD students are lost (in my experience, from asking around 😊). I’m in the second year of my PhD, and everything you said in this video resonates with me. I’m also going through an ebb with my program. There’s a great deal of uncertainty and unknowingness in researching a PhD dissertation. It’s a lot of responsibility and pressure to push the boundaries of human knowledge. That easily leads to feelings of inadequacy and imposter syndrome. All this being said, remember that you’re capable of this work, and that’s why you’re here. This is the toughest rodeo I’ve ever been in too. You’re absolutely not alone - you have an academic family in the comments who understand, relate to, and empathize with you. :)

You can do it, sis. Just keep moving forward. At one point in my doctoral journey I asked myself if it was okay to quit. I was a full time executive opening a brand new hospital, I was going through a divorce and I was a full time student. 40% of my hair fell out. I had an ulcer. My hand would tremor randomly throughout the day. I legitimately thought about quitting because it was too much. And I nearly did, until I asked myself if I thought I would regret it a year later. I knew I would, so I just kept going one day at a time. Over a decade later, I’m so grateful that I did. Be gentle with yourself. You’re stronger than you feel. ❤

That mini-ramble to say, the emotional roller coaster is real. I'm in the middle of my second PhD year and what you're describing is pretty normal for pretty much everyone doing a PhD. A PhD is not a bachelor's degree, not even a master's degree, it's something very very different and very different type of work. Take time off, your brain NEEDS breaks to function and don't beat yourself up too much. Cry, eat some comfort food, sleep a full night and then everything will look so much brighter. But also, because I feel it is important to say especially to high achieving people: it's also okay if you truly truly truly don't want to finish the PhD, then it's totally okay. You don't have to do it just to prove you can do it. If it doesn't bring you joy, don't force it. All the best ❤

In the beginning, I struggled to find a research lab, it was in the midst of the pandemic, I was on therapy and for the first time ever I lost my passion for physics. Met goals that felt unbelievable 🥰 My passion for the field was also restored. Very soon I’ll be a doctor, physicists and research physician working at one of the top #2 hospitals in the nation. I’m rooting for you♥️
Make sure to always make time for YOU. It completely eliminates burnout for me. I picked up so many hobbies along this journey. I don’t work a ton and still get my research done. Mind you I’m doing research in both neurology/radiation oncology and STILL make time to golf, garden etc. Don’t beat yourself up if things don’t go by “the plan”. Just pivot and adjust. It’ll get done. What you are experiencing is just part of the growing pains of getting a PhD. I can truly say that for me, my experience has been a 10/10 still

If you find yourself in the position of having to do reading or going to bed then always go to bed. Unless you have a fixed deadline that you must meet or you'll fail the whole PhD then choose rest and sleep over study/preparation. The university will put pressure on you because they're more worried about students doing nothing for long periods of time. They mean well but sometimes they pile on too much stress. No-one wants to see students in tears because they need sleep but have to study. PhDs are a marathon not a sprint.

I spent some extra time reading dissertations/studies similar to mine (or even just topic searches that peaked my interests.) It helped me hone in on the topics and/or themes that I wanted to build upon. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and take breaks. Give your mind time to “play” in the library. Give yourself grace. You can do this. One thing at a time. It always helps me to put on a sad movie scene that always makes me cry so I get the catharsis of a good cry. Then I can take a moment to feel okay about not feeling okay, and it lets me be able to focus on the next task at hand.
It also helps me to imagine that I am making the decision to drop out of the class/degree. Sure I would feel relieved right now, but what about later?

I’m not sure about the timeline of your program, but I’m in year 3 of my doctoral program (in higher education) and I am only just now narrowing down my dissertation topic. I was stressed too but my advisor assured me that I was not behind!
The doc program has been really good for me too in that it has helped free me from the perfectionism that has had such a tight grip on me for so long. Sometimes all you can do is your best. Write. Write. Write. Submit and move on. But I know that’s easier said than done. 💗

I’m sorry you’re feeling low but as others have commented doing a PhD is not an easy process. Please be gentle be so with yourself. You’re doing your best, just remember to take one day at a time and to be kind to yourself. As someone else commented it’s a marathon not a sprint and we are here to encourage you to keep going. That said please don’t put additional pressure on yourself thinking your audience expects you to be perfect. Far from it I believe we simply want the best for you whatever that is! Hopefully by the time you’re reading this you’re feeling better. Also consider working with a licensed therapist or an academic coach to support you emotionally. Wishing you all the best. x

I retreated for 4 months, did not touch a thing and realised no one checked, no one followed up on me and the pressure was all from myself. and then in the new year I made a new plan and got back on track. My supervisor does two weekly check ins and it could be a walk or coffee or online or in office. That's helped a lot.

Hi Vee, you've got this! The journey is difficult because it is where you are meant to be. One day, you will look back at the challenges and be grateful you didn't give up. I don't know what it feels like to be in your shoes, but you've got this! You are human so tiredness is often a part of the journey so don't be too hard on yourself. Lots of love from South Africa.🥰💫🙏

Thank you so much for the encouragement!! And to be honest, I am not perfect and I guess you all don't always see the reality of what goes on in my everyday life as I do not always capture it to post online. I promise you I am just like any other student, I have my good days and bad days too. I usually lean on my friends and family for support so they are always aware of the full picture. I will try my best to capture more moments like this video. Sending you love 💛💛💛💛

As someone who graduated with a PhD the overwhelm is normal. In the UK we call it the second year blues but in reality it happens from 0.5-2 years. Have some you time, you got this.
