  • Since August 2023, all logging operations within Tallaganda State Forest have ceased. This is a result of the on-ground work being led by Wilderness Australia, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and South East Forest Rescue (SEFR).
In the fog-shrouded forests of Tallaganda, at around 1,200 metres of elevation, we have been trudging through the undergrowth at night with powerful spotlights. We are searching for the homes of the endangered Greater Glider, located high in the tall trees. By about 8pm each of us will likely have identified between one and three ‘den trees,’ which contain natural hollows in which these gliders sleep during the day. Every den tree that is recorded creates a permanent logging exclusion zone of 50 metres radius - or 0.78 hectares.
Logging was due to have started again in Tallaganda a month ago, but today it still remains on hold. With every week that passes, we are finding more greater glider den trees. Every week that our surveys continue leaves less and less forest available to log.
Saving Tallaganda will have a profound knock-on effect for greater gliders everywhere. The NSW Forestry Corporation will understand that if we can do it in Tallaganda, we can do it anywhere there are gliders. And we intend to. By expanding our den tree surveys right across NSW we will likely force the State logging agency to pull out of most or even all critical glider habitat in the State.
Thank you to our partners WWF and SEFR, and to the community members have helped and supported us.
