My wife and I are playing Red Guard and Voidwarden; your videos have been very useful!
Great to hear and glad I can be helpful!
I really like how you present your content. You always find that sweet spot between analyzing cards and not taking it all too seriously. That's makes your channel really enjoyable. Plus you can go through a class in half an hour. Awesome content overall!
Anyone that plays this game and/or is new to this game needs to watch your videos. Very informative and well done. Every time I level up and re-watch those 2 cards reviews to review my choices.
Thank you, that is so kind! So glad I can be helpful!
Gentleman in the streets,
Freak in the Spreadsheets!
Loved the spreadsheet example. Thank you for that!
Ayy, I've been looking forward to this one!
Hope you enjoyed it!
For sure. I love to hear other people's opinions on my favourite class ^ ^
Here's what I took throughout the levels: imgur.com/gallery/bihJE1x
In my early games as a voidwarden (our first attempt at gloomhaven games), i used Close to the Abyss a lot.
It has one hidden advantage - anger management of team, since you are based on trade off's, removing negative effect, and even more, forge it into some decent boost. It is only heal 2, so i treated it mostly as poison removal, to allow teammates healing on their long rest.
Overall tho, I must say, as my first experience with board RPG, Voidwarden was tough challenge, keeping team alive, balancing between curses, healing, and keeping some ace up in my sleeve.
Yep, they had their fun in killing, but when shit went south, everyone was just waiting for me to burn the card and make some cleaning.
Even deck building can be somewhat complex task, compared to other classes.
Recently I have finished JoTL and imported my Voidwarden and Hatchet into the big game. Because I am playing solo until level 7 I picked the exact opposite cards that you have reccomended :D There is a lot of variety to this class but I have not seen anyone talking about a fast initiative, strengthening build :/ With a 2 player setup and a lot of cooperation I think it is also a pretty entertaining and powerful way to play the game. With low enemy count and constant advantage the Hatchet single target damage dealing capability really shined. But I have to admit it was quite tricky to do objective based scenarios and your recommendations just would work better with a higher player group without perfect information :) Great video by the way, keep up the good work!
Thanks so much and love to hear that you found another way to make her work! Varied paths is one of the things that make Gloomhaven great!
I played her in 3 players as pure support (heal, curses, blesses and granting attacks) and never took cards which actually do damage. I would recommend to take Comfortable Shoes (allow to make Move 3 as basic bottom action of every card). I found it very useful as we often go late and things can change in a way that our initial plan doesn't work so we need to use basic move.
I loved her so far so actually thinking about picking her for big Gloomhaven after retiring my current character!
she ports very well in to orig gloom!
I also like damaging bottoms.
Good music in the intro, I feel like it fits the genre. I DO suggest dropping its volume down. To the level that it feels more of an ambience fill, because the beats were competing with your voice a bit.
(Although I could listen to what you were saying, I got distracted a couple of times because of the music).
But OVERALL good video 👍
ok thanks for letting me know. I tested the audio levels when producing the video and it was super quiet so I'll have to take a look and see why it is louder than I thought!
I agree. It's the first thing I noticed as well.
I’m listening on the phone and it is definitely hard to hear him
Good guide! My sister refused to play this class because she’s “too squishy” LOL. We’re just starting out our JOTL playthrough. My uncle has the main game, and I really got hooked. I can’t wait to play some of my JOTL characters in the real gloomhaven. My uncle usually has a party of 4 so maybe I’ll try out the void warden 👀 But again thank you for the super helpful guide!
No problem, glad I can be helpful!
33:00 alternate build - if you want to avoid the spoilers.
I mainly use her because she never stops filling the enemy deck with curses, lol
haha yep she is good at that
I really enjoyed your video, thanks for doing this guide. However, would you consider adding time stamps? As a player just starting with Voidwarden, I'd greatly enjoy being able to skip from L1-L2 cards to Perks or Equipment parts without risking any spoiler. That being said, keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching! Not the first time I have been asked this and it's on my to do list!
Surge of Power combos so well with Care Package from the Hatchet. It works even better if there is a bunch of enemies with poison not requiring any cooperation.
Black Boon doesn't heal multiple allies; Close to the Abyss does. Sounds like you explained it backwards, but that was your reason for preferring Black Boon. Regardless, I enjoyed this and all of your videos.
Maybe sloppy language? lol I like black boon better because is a bit less conditional and empowering dark is super useful!
Surprised you didn't mention the combo of Master Influence bottom poisoning an ally, with Close to the Abyss top -- gets a double bless on the ally. I thought this was a decent play early on if you don't want to move and can't reach any enemies.
My kiddo has been combining that onto my hatchet every chance he can. Had those blessing crits hit more then once in a cinematic moment
'Black Boon' + 'Wicked Scratch' I actually didn't realize, also I never used the bottom of 'Taunting Fate', might need to try that.
Tho the top of 'Black Boon' pretty much forces you to use 'Close to the Abyss', I wish there was more interaction with poisoning your allies. That's kinda lame and rare to pull off.
That spread sheet..... it needs labels, no idea what it's showing 😅
Enjoyed the video, I saw the alternate build but didn't see the main build or was it what was explained in the first few levels of cards and not a separate section?
I like a lot of the voidwardens abilities, I just feel like through the early levels waay too many cards that can actually get things done are all loss cards. She’s damn near useless until she starts in with the losses.
Interesting guide! Thank you for the video! 🙂
We played and beat JOTL at 4 players, and she was my favorite character.
Resigned Frenzy was really one of my preferred cards. For both top and bottom
First , the top (at 4 players) was really amazing. Used well, I was able to dish between 20 to 40 damage almost each scenario. Totally effective with enemy that explode or those that poison.
Even the bottom is nice, played with Freeze the Soul top.
It becomes Move 3, attack 2, attack 4 and leaves the muddled and poisoned if it survive. And bonus , 2 xp
This combo is easier to come by at level 2, from which you get Ice from Crushing Cold bottom and Dark from one of your many Dark generation card
Also, the Demolitioner is your best friend/target to your attack granting action like Wicked Scratch since she has the best modifier deck
she's fun and powerful!
Thanks, very educational video, as allways! Yesterday I late pledged Arena Contest with Tanares Adventures expansion. Looks promising.
Thanks! Yeah it's going to be amazing!
Oh that 5th level card...
Spoiler....
Alert....
I was really disappointed when I first got it and read the top... especially compared to the other 3 characters.
Then I read the bottom and OMG this is awesome.
Since then my first round was almost always the same. Master's influence top and this bottom which you can already reap the benefits from MI. A great starter
Yeah it's a pretty good btm for sure!
Great video. I actually like the initiative cause it helps me get hit less
Are you obliged to take the curse ability action in Freeze the Soul?
In the rulebook you read that all abilities and action can be skipped. If so, what is its purpose in the card?
Was wondering aswell
Negative effects can't be skipped
I've actually found it really annoying, trying to do damage as a Voidwarden. Given the majority of the attacks that are actually good, are Loss effects, i'm always reluctant to use them and risk exhausting quickly. I play with 2 friends, a Hatchet and Demolitionist, so I mostly just focus on Cursing, and crowd control/healing. I remember thinking that card that boosts your granted attacks was going to be insane! But, I almost am new in position to use any of the attack cards, and again, the reluctance to burn a Loss effect. So I rarely ever use my actual attack deck. I've mostly focused on just trying to get more cards with movement, because I am so slow compared to my friends, I'm always behind and out of position. Which is frustrating, because while I am enjoying playing the crowd control/healer build, it makes perks basically useless, as again, I'm never really attacking with my deck. I've been focusing on buying the perks that give me cards with additional effects, like applying a curse, or a free heal to an ally, etc. So at least something more productive can come of it.
I like the class, I just find a lot of the card designs not very user-friendly, given how the mechanics work for that class.
Ya pretty high skill floor, but once you get her working she is quite good!
Great video but I have a question regarding taunting fate and resigned frenzy (22:15). You said that those two cards can generate a great combo but the +1 or +2 attack is only on the first attack and if there are for example four enemies, each one of them is performing an attack for an amount of four attacks. Is that right?
The +1 or +2 is for the entire attack action which in Gloomhaven means 1 half of a card so the bonus applies to all of the attacks granted by Resigned Frenzy!
@@MagnumPI1979 okay, thank you very much
Not a problem!
lol magnumpi is actually me, was logged into my other google account this morning...
@@neuralnetgames6540 Sorry to bother you again but I have another question. Does master influence works like taunting fate or is just adds the bonus only on the first attack?
I didn't see the link to the stamina explanation
Added to description. Thanks for the heads up!
What did you name your void warden? Go
New to the Voidwarden, and this really helped me get a sense of where to put efforts! I was trying to run with Red Guard and keep up, but the VW style fights his speed so much it got frustrating; realizing how to manipulate rather than output pure damage is really the key... and as one Reddit post yelled: treating this class like a support is a trap, ie this class is darker and more powerful when you "slay a different way". In my case, I can now go back to the game and work out simple magic / positional coordinations without needing to constantly mend and buff. Really great overview - thank you!
As an aside, it would be great if you could put video sections for each card and level sections, as well as the alt build - i'd like to reference this vid more but scrubbing to the specific time is on par with VW's initiative ;)
Thanks for the content! small question, if for example the red guard has 2pts of life and it is poison. In my turn I use Black boon for the heeling. that means the heeling of 5 serves just removed the poison and then i re-poison the red guad. So the card has no effect? I understood well
yep you are 100% correct. not a great card to play when you are already poisoned! works fine with wound though
@@neuralnetgames6540 Thanks for the advice for wound condition I was applying the same healing rules as poison!!! Really good to know and thanks for taking the time to answer me! I am now a Fan of your content !
When you doing more for gloomhaven for unlockable classes
More guides coming up in the fairly near future! I have a bunch already made as well think I have 6 or less classes to do
So only Geminate and Blinkblade left then. Whos next?
Won't be doing those at this point as they don't have updated cards that I know of! But I do have some really cool vids coming up. Next guide will be Angry face class, and then some surprise videos on some really neat community stuff.
suuuper helpful thank you so much
No problem and thanks for watching!
The bgm in the beginning is really annoying.
It’s only a little too loud, otherwise I think it’s fine. I didn’t even notice the music until you pointed it out.
Yes too loud
What Enhancements do you recommend with Voidwarden? (I think there where no recommendations?)
Adding curse on "the last journey "so becomes double curse is really good. Throw in on a volatile bomb attack and you can add 6 curses
@@gregcampanello6890 uh nice idea! Are 150 Gold because of a lvl 4 Card, but probably worth it /hmm
Is void warden and hatchet a good combo?
yep!
omg was this music necessary?
the Voidwarden is dangerous because she comes from void and she can also heal. i love this type of class. the black cards tend to be silver.
The void makes me think of the astral in a black infinite void you don't know what can happen to you and not to return to the earthly dimension... it's terrible horrible terror.
I really hate the voidwarden, lets stop tip toeing around, it sucks! Can we replace some of the level 1 cards with A and B tutorial cards? Would this make it easier to play for beginners?
Can't take that background music man
