EPIC! Beauty, taste, intelligence, intense musicality, perfect phrasing, emotional devotion and absolute control about every single tone, every dynamic detail and - of course: an unbelievable charisma- that made Hvorostowsky’s art fascinating and unique.

His breath control and legato in this marvellous romance never cease to amaze me. No one can sing it like Dmitri and he knows it.

Masterful performance by one of the few singers today worth listening to.
I would give him 50 stars if I could!

What a tenor he was. I still find it hard not to cry when listening to him. He was taken Home so young. Thank you for sharing.

See his recital in Moscow in 2008 , with Ivary Ilia( in his unofficial website).
It seems to me,that here he sings this song better.
    Anyway, he's always great.

There is nothing wrong with the singing in this recording, what it is that you are all Jealous and would like to sing like that.
I have heard some great singers and some very bad singers that think they can sing.
Coming from a musical background, due to health problems I had to give up singing. A couple of members in my church think they are great, well if you heard it you would know what a bad singer sounded like.
The trumpet he also plays and would need a few music lessons.

Sounds like he is sick in this video or maybe the end of a long concert

I'm sure his real voice is great, but because he has chosen to sing from the sound of his voice he is too busy creating tone and ensuring all the physical cogs are turning. He needs to be more simple - to just be himself and be true to the composer. Singing is not a physical business - it is in the mind where it all happens.

This is so wrong I have no idea where to begin. I'm responding so that young singers don't listen to you and get dumb ideas. Singing is an incredibly physical business. Singing should be a marriage between a "well-oiled" physical mechanism and an active musical/dramatic/poetic imagination and intent. All of the greats we worship (Corelli, del Monaco, Callas, Freni, Price, etc...) were able to create such incredible art through their vocalism because they were physically hooked up correctly, and they also happened to be insanely imaginative artists. It's pretty funny that I'm responding to someone with the screen name "The Art of Bel Canto." What do you think "bel canto" is?
Dmitri is not true to the composer? Have you looked at these pages of music? Are you Russian? I am guessing not, so I'll venture that he's got more agency interpreting Rachmaninov than either of us. He does everything on the page, and then some! We are interpreters of black dots and lines, and we have every right to take interpretive liberties, as long as they are backed up by what is on the page.
This is what Dmitri's "real voice" sounds like. He's not doing it wrong, it's just a freak, rare instrument. If any young singers are reading this, don't copy Dmitri's voice. Go and find out what your true voice is through the study of the physical and the abstract in tandem.
      Peace and love,
      Theo

That being said, the tempo is much too slow.
