The spread of islam in southeast asia is mainly the result of monarchs accepting islam to continue the trade relationships with south india after the hindu empires fell to the islamic invasion of India. Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei & southern Philippines were Hindu\Buddhist empires for centuries before their monarchs converted & pushed islam to their entire community. Also Hindu\Buddhist rule at that time did not ban other religions unlike islam which has a very bad record on other religions especially when they are in power
