In general, acute hypercapnia is the driving force behind CO2 narcosis. The etiology of CO2 Narcosis is complex, it's useful to categorize the potential causes into three categories: decreased minute ventilation, increased physiologic dead space, and increased carbon dioxide production. Hypercapnea is a condition in which the amount of carbon dioxide dissolved in the blood rises above the normal level. It can cause neuromuscular dysfunction and often leads to a depressed level of consciousness. The minute ventilation is the respiratory rate into tidal volume.
Anything that affects the central respiratory center can have an impact on minute ventilation. There is another unique Condition in which CO2 Narcosis is present. It is oxygen-induced hypercapnia, which presents in some patients with COPD when given supplemental oxygen. Increased CO2 production According to current understanding, hypercapnia alters neurotransmitter levels involved in consciousness. Normal individuals do not experience alterations in consciousness until PaCO2 is greater than 75 mmHg.
Carbon dioxide is fundamental for blood circulation in the brain. Pathophysiology of CO2 Narcosis

My father just passed away from this on the 2nd… He had COPD but caught the RSV virus. He was in the hospital for days with normal oxygen levels but not being able to breathe and the doctors were confused. In the end they found out it was CO2 buildup but he refused a ventilator sadly.
    Rest in peace dad ❤

I have gotten chronic hypercapnia due to hypoventilation based breathing method Buteyko. Very frustrating.
EDIT: I can see people are still reading this comment. I found out that I wasn't suffering from any form of hypercapnia/hypoventilation. I suffered from something called chroniosepsis, which only real authentic Buteyko instructors know about. I was cured when I had my tonsils cut out (tonsillectomy). Will be happy to help anyone that became sick by doing incorrect and non-authentic Buteyko.

Omg I was thinking of doing Buteyko myself? You definitely got hypercapnia from that? Did you do it without supervision? Please tell me more. I’m currently reading ‘Breath’ by James Nestor who mentions this method in the book and how carbon dioxide can heal.

@@Sufficient4UsIsAllah I did it with supervision... two times. Both Patrick Mckeown instructors. They were experienced enough. It has ruined my life actually. No doctor have been able to help recover but I'm waiting for a special examination.
It was a combination of me being specially sensitive to the method and then my instructor saying I should do long breath holds.
I would say this to you: Go ahead with the method, just go easy, have patience, you will see results in time. NEVER do medium or long breath holds. Do the other things instead.
Anyway, I think you will be fine. I am just one of an insanely small number of people who are extremely sensitive to the method.
