I am a San Bernardino native. The city used to be a lovely place to grow up. At my cabin in the San Bernardino mountains currently and planning to make it my full-time home very soon. Thank you, John, for educating us on the interesting history. And I was there at the Stones' 1966 concert and even went back stage as a KMEN radio station winner. Or was it KFXM?
Juliet Montague Let me move in with you I will catch up fish from the lakes and rivers and I will spend afternoons chopping wood with my shirt off for you!
Lived in "Berdo" in late 70's town was heavily populated, Holcolcomb was mayor, who only cared about his image... didn't give a shit about town..sorry to see what's happened to town. As things got worse, moved to Orange County...glad I did...!
Holcomb served more terms than any mayor. He was corrupt as hell. And his gold digging daughter married my father and the two of them stole him blind and destroyed his legacy. If it's any comfort, he died an alcoholic who gambled away all of his corrupt fortune, mostly at San Manuel Casino, and died broke. A fitting ending to his legacy I feel.
I went to high school with Mayor Holcomb's son and visited his home. He lived up in the hills with a fantastic night time view of the city. Mayor Holcomb's brother was Grant Holcomb, a newscaster for one of the TV stations in LA. As I recall, the Holcombs were a San Bernardino founding family.
You didn't mention CCR performed In San Bernandino ,that where John got he's idea of writing his song - tombstone shadow- it mention san Bernardino in the song.
Great video John, Your brother Doug was a classmate at LLA class of 1970. Our class reunion is coming up end of Feb, 2020. Thanks for all the memories.
SB wasn't bad back in the day. My friends and I used to walk up E St. window shop at Harris Co., Woolwooth's, Lerners, etc. Catch a movie at the beautiful, ornate California Theater, then eat up at St. Georges Smorgasbord. It would be dark by then and we girls walked back down E St. to the Greyhound Station to take the bus back home down Mill St. and the Palace Market, home. Unfortunately, if we did that in 2019 we would have never made it to the bus station. Sad about that city. Trashy.
Maybe you're too young, but when I went downtown, and I probably did it every weekend, I'd go to the West Coast / Crest or the Ritz theaters on E St. The West Coast hosted the Donald Duck club, and the Ritz hosted the Bugs Bunny club. Both were all-day kids affairs with all the cartoons, Stooges, Hellz-A-Poppin, Commando Cody serials you could ever want, along with two movies, usually horror and science fiction. Most times, parents dropped us off and picked us up, but I remember one time, I had to walk home. I do remember going to the California theater, and I remember how beautiful and glamorous it was. It looks like it still is, and I'm happy with that.
Hi John! Great and interesting history of SB. My husband, Joey, came across your video and shared it with me. You should consider making more videos on YT. Your own channel. Thanks for sharing! 😊
I have another one but I was not an eyewitness so you would have to verify it. One of Cas Sermaks daughters was Betty Davis' personal assistant for years. She would do Christmas at there home in Quail Canyon. She went to Midnight Mass at Saint Anne church many times. I went to school and church there for my whole childhood so thats my connection.
Campus Crusade for Christ , It wasn’t called that when it Was a glamorous hot spring hotel , but a lot of famous people have been there it was the hot spot!
The Byrds appeared with the Stones at their '64 concert. I was there. There was one other band on that show. It was a local band that had performed at a Pacific High School student meeting. I remember one member of the band, the guitarist, did Chuck Berry's Chicken Walk.

This take on San Bernardino is atrocious to say the least, I'm not even from San Bernardino and I know way more than this. And not a single black person on here or other athletes that have made real impacts in your city and lending to it. As the biggest county in the United States this minor history take is horrible although there's not many good things to say about the city there is a bigger history detail than this well hell if you don't know the rest of the history I know for a fact that you know about the citys' racial history and hatred of blacks so talk about that.Talk about all those old politicians that you named that were racist. The city is poor as hell and has zero attractions which is why the celebrities you did name that visited the city was way back in the 1930s and 40s and the guy you spoke on that's which happens to be the mayor of the city now Morris previously judge Morris I remember him and his brother one of them is racist and one is not or I should say appears not to be racist you're downtown Metropolis is a joke jobs are scarce only warehouse jobs low-level which is why no companies have home bases in San Bernardino the largest County in our United States is a joke all this was open land in desert to build so many things and do so many things with but yet and still open nothing's getting done , the water is horrible out here and leaders aren't doing anything about it and now the homeless and drug addicts have overrun the city it looks like 1982 Los Angeles the pandemic might have actually helped the city cause it actually looks slightly better than it did. Didn't mean to really rent like this cause I know this take was really on celebrities but you left out so many it just put my mind in the whole other space. But thee Biggest celebrity from San Bernardino is "McDonald's" and you gave them very minimal exposure not even no pictures and you have the original one on E Street and there's pictures of that everywhere and what about Baker's Burger the burger chain might not be at celebrity status but they're definitely success story
Very awesome research on this. I live here and always was in love with the history.
👌 chheeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaahhhh!!
You forgot Randy Rhoads is buried in San Bernardino.

When Norton AFB closed down, San Bernardino literally became a ghost town.
