I got one of these at the thrift store for $45. Probably need to get home and open it and discover it’ll need a boot drive, and I doubt it has additional RAM inside the optional slot. Usually the thrift store removes all the components and sells laptops as the shell only. Hoping for 7th gen CPU! 🤞🏼

There are a high number of ThinkPads that get released to the refurbished market through surplus (this is how I source and purchase). They are durable, upgrade friendly, and being business class are a step above cheaper laptops found in big box stores. Solid investment.

The T470s does not have a socketed CPU, so you would have to replace the motherboard. CPU is soldered on. I would say it's good for programming, especially learning.

Thanks! If you can find a T480 or T480s for a similar price you'll have the advantage of a 4 core 8 thread i5, which will help a little bit with gaming. Minecraft and Terraria should be ok. Other games will need to have settings and resolution adjusted in order to have a smooth experience.

Windows 11 can be installed in a rather easy process, but there will not be as much specific driver support (should still work fine). If you are lucky, good. Battery life is not a guarantee with used lithium ion batteries. They could last for years or they could fail rather quickly. There are third party options, though, so in the event you need one they are available.

Yes, there is an extra RAM slot. I have only tested installing max 24GB RAM (16GB stick)

It's not really a bad idea until something goes awry. Driver support will be geared towards Windows 7, 8, 10. I think you will be ok.
