The Motion: This House Believes Britain and the EU are Better Together.
Nick Clegg MP closes the case for the proposition, as the fifth speaker of six in the debate.
The motion carried, with a total of 283 ayes to 73 noes.
Nicholas William Peter Clegg MP is a British Liberal Democrats politician who was the Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Lord President of the Council from 2010 to 2015 in the Cameron coalition ministry. Clegg was the Leader of the Liberal Democrats from 2007 to 2015 and has been the Member of Parliament for Sheffield Hallam since 2005.

+Ivan Gartenhaus He first made a point about how we don't know anything for sure. He then followed that by giving subjective statements about what might happen if we leave the EU and saying 'we know' they will happen for sure. So hypocritical and scaremongering.
Any good speaker can sound convincing given a dictated speech of lies by your masters, to expand to public attention. Nick is already a traitor, a convicted liar, and head of the most failed political establishment in Great Britain. Even the Green party over took the Libdems..... "ouch"
He sounded like a cheap actor spouting out rehearsed lines. It was very see-through and highly unconvincing.

So in December 2015, Nick thought that the leavers would go on moaning about the result after they lost. He should be reminded about this every time he moans and refuses to accept the result. Hypocrisy is a "quality" every politician MUST have.

andy mane Because that's it's biggest benefit to us... It enriches our economy massively. Eurosceptics don't seem to realise how many British companies have investments and projects in Europe that would suffer and therefore bring less of a return to Britain should we leave the EU. Take Vodafone for example, they are a British company that have expanded to a global group with multiple investments, projects and startups all over Europe (and the rest of the world). For them leaving the EU, would firstly making executive travel more tricky and destroy free movement for all their workers, secondly require mass renegotiations of contracts with european companies, thirdly make relations between British execs and foreign execs more tentative, fourthly we would no longer have a say in European Telecoms Law that could benefit a financial return in England, fifthly we could expect to see our roaming charges go up when we go on holiday and sixthly the value of their shares will drop significantly. This is just one example... The economy is going to take a serious hit and people will start losing jobs should we leave the EU. It's a bad idea. It seems to me a large portion of the eurosceptic vote is over immigration, not democracy.

The Rumsfeld quote is inelegant, but not hard to follow.
I criticized the precious pro-EU girl from Australia and the comment was removed. Now I have watched Clegg speak. It is such an empty, redundant speech welcomed by canned laughter and the audience gives him a standing ovation. They found him hilariously brilliant. I don't get it. I must be living on another planet. Is this what socialists do, support each other no matter how illogical and shallow the other is? This is truly tragic.
+Nell philpott In case you haven't noticed, the poll as showing the Brexit campaign currently neck and neck. That's because this is an issue that divides people because of a number factors including their personal experience, their level of education, their knowledge of history and international affairs etc. This isn't happening on anther planet, just like WW2 blew the heads off 60 million people. But you don't really care do you.
+Nell philpott not logical? In my sens he didn't cover up all the argument and major risks. But I though it was good. Why? Well there is a rule in speech: quotes + numbers. And he did it. Some in term of debating ability, he undoubtly won.

Er, I watched the whole thing. I'll never get that hour of my life back again. Sad to watch so many socially illiterate people talking about their unfounded fears about 'democracy', as if they really care about democracy. What they want is to drag everyone who gets on just fine with other Europeans down to their level. No thank you.
I like how he backfired at the beginning by proving that it is possible to be less smart than Donald Rumsfeld but still go just as far in life.
Clegg is now doing an amazingly good impression of a japanese WW2 soldier not giving up. He plans to working on this impression for a long time. BTW what we do know is that Clegg"s political life is now over. We also know that UK had a life before the EU...a rather successful one. Clegg has no loyalty to UK. His love is for EU. And he talks complete rubbish.

Regardless of where you stand on politics, left or right, I thought the debate over democracy was settled? Surely, on both sides of the political spectrum, there must be an instinctive rejection of undemocratic supranational institutions exerting ever more power and influence over free people?

The UK really should leave the EU as soon as possible. It's not like they have contributed anything besides being "Washington's poodle in Europe". Either way the brits seem to have decided they are a couple of islands (rather far) off the coast of America rather than barely off the cost of Europe. So go with that, it's my advice. And good riddance.
Scotland should stay though, if they have another referendum. Just saying.

+Alex Stiltskin the EU export their surplus of good and services (which is good for both) but when the UK leaves it will take time to make a deal and in that meantime other nations compagnies might take the opportunity to fill that vaccuum.
Don't beleive that a special treatment will be made. Althought some nations would run to try to get a better deal, France and Germany (at least) will block it. Why? By ressentment? Maybe, but mainly to avoid a bigger political crisis to see nations like sweeden and Denmark (not so font of the EU since the beginning but joined anyway) or even Poland (with the current party of Freedom & Justice). So it will take time.
What about other nations? A deal was made bewteen SouthKorea and the EU. The UK could reach the Korean market but not because South Korea wanted the UK or France, nope nope, they wanted to get Germany. So the size of the market is a good pressure element in negociation but as well asset from other nations.
Furthermore, what about the cost of filling all the legislations taken out because there were from the EU. So a scenario like Canada is dangerous.
Then what about doing like Norway and be in the EEA, well you would need to pay to have access to the club without being able to say a word about any regulations so back from square one.
They talk about migrations, I understand the point but what aout all the retired people who goes to South of France and Spain to enjoy a nice life? Well they bring their capital that is true but they create a burden on the housing market and thus create difficulties for young families to settle. But there aren't that bad that I agree. What about the active person living in Brettany (France), same problems. Plus, what all those people will become? Some of them can afford a comfortable life in the continental Europe while they couldn't in UK due to the high cost of living.
What about borders? there is already controls. But in case of Brexit, France, Belgium and so forth have already stated that the control would not be on their sole anymore. So the point of the control are a bit hurt. Plus, it might lead to a sparkof the conflict in Northern Ireland. Do you really beleive they will accept to not be free to go to Ireland like they can to today? Violence might rise and unfortunatly casualties too... What about Scotland? Well in their case although they will not be happy I don't think they will leave. But tehy will be reaaaaaallllly annoying with Westminster about that.

economical and social impact is central to this debate for me and it does seem like the uk will be worse off if it leaves the eu. so if cameron can secure the treaty changes he is trying to secure, ill vote stay. if not ill have to rethink it all.
+lexusdominus on social issues not sure because all the social laws will be removed.... and as stated by the FT, since the UK joined the EU, the social security has tremendously increased. As for the economical side, UK will be hurt as FTA takes time to negotiate and some might fill the vaccuum left by the UK. In a Brexit case the UK won't be the only one hurt but undoubtly the first and for a long time. My country is 4th in the ranking.
(all those law deasapearing aren't actually that bad and plus a lot of people will be required to write them in UK style and that will take times and money (a lot)).
Join the EEA? Norway style well if you wanna pay and have no say fine by me.
Like Canada? Fewer better deal because France and Germany would punish UK in some ways in order to prevent other nations to do the same and thus create political and economic crisis.

I do think it benefits our economy and I don't have a problem with free movement of people. I take issue with the European court overruling our courts and effecting our laws. I also don't like the way power is being taken away from elected officials from all the European nations and is instead held by unelected bureaucrats in Brussels. What I want is a European Union with more power going to its member states.

However, I don't agree about your statment about the "unelected bureaucrats in Brussels". The Commission has the inititative but they aren't deaf. Lobbys, citizens initiative, Parliamentaries, MEPs, Ministers etc... can talk and invite them to work on some issues. Plus the decisions to accept what the Commissions came up with is up to the EP and Council, both body elected by the people on a European scale for one and nationaly speaking for the other. The EU is driven by guidelines made up by the European Council made up of leaders of state and gvt. So it's not so undemocratic.
So the European Council and the Ministers have way more power than one might believe. But I guess I am biased as I have the naivety to beleive that the EU regulation are good (might be better though). Plus, I see myself as european citizens (although I am well attached to my country and monarchy). The challenge is to find the riht ballance between the sovereignty and the cocneption of liberalism and socialism. And in that I want the UK to stay because the UK is a key player to maintain and sustain that balance. So let's not forget the argument about UK's role in the EU.

Mass immigration is a problem for all of Europe, and the EU doesn't stop it it, it facilitates it. It's diluting the demographics of once homogeneous and culturally rich nations. America is a prime example of the failure of multiculturalism. I'm pro immigration but I'm more against mass immigration than anything. I've seen first hand what it does to my country (America) and I don't want other nations to follow. Immigration is good in small doses but don't overdo it like we did. Large masses of immigrants means no assimilation which ultimately leads to division. But a small healthy dose of immigrants forces assimilation and strengthens a nation, as opposed to dividing it.

I voted Liberal Democrat at the last two General Elections, and I am voting to Leave the EU on Thursday. Europe is not the same thing as the EU, the EU is illiberal, bad for the young poor people of Europe and has no democratic accountability at the top. Vote Leave if you believe in left-wing values and democracy.
But the whole liberal democrat ideology revolves around free trade and the free movement of the factors of production. How do you reconcile being a Liberal and yet voting us out of the worlds largest, single, free market?

You have to be an Oxford student to be so dumb. I note that Nick Clegg's long-gone seat in Parliament was won on the backs of uni students - who are probably itinerant denizens of Sheffield-Hallam - and that seat was lost to Jared O'Mara, who had to resign because he was a disgrace.

How can you know it would be less safe? I'm sure controlling your own borders would lead to an increase in terrorism xD. So Clegg based his proposition on not knowing anything, but believing people in authoritative positions despite those people having political agendas and not providing an explanation for how there views are valid.
This did not age well. He was wrong on pretty much every account and claim. Which does raise an interesting question. He spent pretty much is entire career in politics and some of it at a very high level. Was he really this mistaken? Or did he know this all to be horseshit?
What was he wrong about? There is no trade deal yet, and it seems whichever Boris brings is going to be shitty, with the NHS up for grabs for the US healthcare sector, Scottish independence support numbers are up, Northern Ireland's situation is unclear and the region might be effectively isolated even more from the rest of the UK and heading to a United Ireland (support is up for that too), even Welsh independece support numbers are up after many years which is insane.
I didn't listen to his talk just so the picture and thought I'd give him a thumbs down.
