When I heard this the first time, I cried! Elton does such a wonderful job on this song! Even though they weren’t his songs, he gave it his all when he had to sing these cover versions.
I had this on my phone and was listening to it one day when my husband and his friend was there. They commented NO ONE could sing it like Garfunkle. I said well, this is EJ. They were astounded. Still gives me chills
They should not have been astounded there are several parts where it is really obvious to anyone with a knowledge of Elton’s vocals on his early 70s albums .
Why?? Why did it make you cry?? I'm asking because I was OK until he sang the, "And when you need a friend. I'm sailing right behind," and it showed a crazy pic of John with his eyes wide open like an idiot. That was when I felt a tear in my eye. This was beautifully done. I'm going to scroll up. If I see a single "dislike" on this. I'm gonna be furious............. RATS. There are 12. I am furious. --- Great cover.
@@isaacpadron3211 it made me cry because it was just so beautiful. He had a fantastic voice and it reached down and touched my soul. Something I find only his music can really do, to that extent at least.
This song and the man singing it will always hold a very special place in my heart! A far superior version of this song 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘❤️😘😘😘😘😘😘😘❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘😘😘😘❤️😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘❤️❤️😘
Bull crap. He cannot compare to Garfunkel. He sang Questions by the Moody Blues. No comparison there also. I do like his younger voice as it is fuller more melodic than what came later.
UR welcome. Glad U enjoy! Not exactly Elton's own version, but rather he was paid to do this anonymously back in 69 or 70, for one of the budget cover records being sold then.
Awesome post! Thank you! Didn't know Elton had such "recordings" back in the day with "Pickwick," uncredited as well, therefore, no telling who were singing. But sure you could tell Elton's voice in this song, and all this time I didn't know he covered, "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Thank you Ronnie Friend, i finally get to see your picture! Is that you above? Big Elton John's music fan here. I know you posted a lot of Elton's songs here on RUclips, and then write comments too as well. :-)
There's usually a low undercurrent in Elton's voice on the lower notes, but I think he's altering his vocal technique to give his voice the same thinness Art Garfunkel's voice has on those notes.
When you’re weary, feeling small, When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all; I’m on your side. when times get rough And friends just can’t be found, Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down. Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down. When you’re down and out, When you’re on the street, When evening falls so hard I will comfort you. I’ll take your part. When darkness comes And pains is all around, Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down. Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down. Sail on silvergirl, Sail on by. Your time has come to shine. All your dreams are on their way. See how they shine. If you need a friend I’m sailing right behind. Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind. I have a Pickwick budget vinyl I bought in 1976. It's got the original recording of 'Writing' off 'Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy', 'Listen To What The Man Said' with a band called "Strings" (not Wings) and 'I'm Not In Love' with a band with a name that resembles 10 cc. Thanks for posting!
It was indeed released - but Reg Dwight (Elton John) sang it anonymously. On these "Top of the Pops" albums they hired studio musicians to sing current pop songs, without giving any credit to the studio singers. They just did it to earn a living working in studios. Elton did a lot of these in 1969-70 before he achieved success with his real name and his own songs.
@@RonnieFriend I never knew that. I ran across it last summer while at our cabin, and my husband and his friend commented NO ONE could ever redo that song that way it was originally sung. There were shocked when I said it was EJ. I'd love for it to be released on an album
Hmm, as much as I love EJ, I don't think he did justice to such a great song. But I'm probably biased due to Art Garfunkel's pure and magnificent voice.
This song is not found on any TOTP album or on any other UK cover version album for that matter. It can be found on some European and Scandinavian cover version albums. I discovered this song already in the 1990´s on a Swedish Music For Pleasure album.
It most certainly is! This is about the same time he recorded the album "Elton John" - you can hear a lot of similarities..... ruclips.net/video/tPP4N820BBY/видео.html
I LOVE this version. Elton’s voice is so soft and gentle.
When I heard this the first time, I cried! Elton does such a wonderful job on this song! Even though they weren’t his songs, he gave it his all when he had to sing these cover versions.
Elton was only 23 years old hear. Beautiful. What more is there to say.

Whitney Houston Natalie cole Jennifer Hudson Jennifer Holliday Luther Vandross versions.
@@ronaldtant3196 they don't follow music. They are both in the military and don't have time to follow it. I am the EJ fan.
Oh, wow! This can’t be an easy song to sing but oh boy Elton smashes it completely! He must have a similar high range to Art Garfunkel!
He had a higher heas voice allowing him to hit those tenor notes. Art has a lower range but he compensates with a high falsetto.
Personally I think EJ sang it better...
I love it. One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite singers. I love this version as much as Art's version.😀😀😀😀😀
5 yrs of not making it. I would have given up,but Elton didn`t. I am happy he pressed on.
Thank God, and we wouldn't have such songs as "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Daniel, and Your Song, etc.....etc....etc.......and etc...
Elton did a brilliant job on this song. Truely beautiful. Loved the quality of his voice back then.
How did I miss Elton's version all these years? Love it!!
For these and other reasons, it's not hard to love Elton John. Fantastic.
Elton John is everything! And that voice! He is a gift for us! 🚀♥️♥️🇧🇷
I love these early EJ years, demos, rarities, little undiscovered gems. thanks for posting!
UR very welcome! Glad you enjoy.

As much as I love Elton, and he is my musical crush since 71 when I heard Levon on the radio, I disagree. Art's voice is suited better for the song.
Beautiful. The music is spectacular, too. Elton=treasure❤
It's an honour to be given the chance to sing this in my view
Wow...this just made my day so much better!! Now knowing that Elton John has done a cover of this amazing song ugh...😍👌🏼🎶
I have always been a fan of this great man, but this here takes all cakes
WoW!! Sir Elton’s rendition of the song is so beautiful!!! It blew me away!!
Elton improves every song he covers -- and his version of his own songs are always better than any covers. Amazing.

Great cover, Sir Elton.
Bellissima versione con la voce di Elton

Funny how as Time Marches on one finds who really were on albums.

This could stand alone as a hit in it's own right. What other un-credited stuff did Elton do?

Just discovered that. One of my favourite songs.
It doesn't sound his style though.
Cool! Elton John sings Paul Simon.
Art Garfunkel is actually the singer in their version. Paul Simon wrote the song *Like A Bridge Over Troubled Water*
@@jdenino6022 Yes, that is what I meant. He sang Paul’s song Bridge over Troubled water. Art Garfunkel sung lead on the original recording.
I love the instrumentation at the end. It is definitely more pronounced with the woodwinds from 3:10 onward.
looks like he's channeling the Velvet Underground at the 3:34 mark.
I'm not familiar with the Velvet Underground; is that in reference to the band's sound in general or a particular song of theirs?
Hmm, as much as I love EJ, I don't think he did justice to such a great song. But I'm probably biased due to Art Garfunkel's pure and magnificent voice.
Ethereal tones aren't particularly popular these days.
