Also make sure your turning the fly wheel in the correct rotation. This will make sure the impeller doesn’t get messed up when install the alternator belt. Use a little dish soap on the impeller and housing . it’s makes it super easy to install. Great DIY video.
Great video... Thanks for sharing. One other item I would add to check on your 100/300 hours is to inspect your water filter. Depending on the model of your merc you might have one or two of these filters. They are just meshed plastic and can be cleaned very easy and if you fish in a lot of slop you would be surprised how much crap gets caught in there...
I think you did an awesome job of explaining the entire process and every step! I like how you showed the maintenance decal and walked everyone through each step on what's needed. Removing the lower unit and doing the water pump, you did a great job of explaining. You mentioned that was your "300 hour service" that you did at 248 hrs. How many times have you replaced your water pump impellor so far? It sure looked brand new when you pulled it out. It's always peace of mind to change it anyway, and to make sure the lower unit doesn't get stuck in place either. Overall awesome video! Thank you so much for taking the time and posting this!
that was a good video few tips for the next time you do the big service take the spark plugs out then do the belt it will make the engine turn over easier for you . i always put a bit of vaseline on the impeller makes the housing go on easier and your impeller is lubed on its first rotation
Great Great detail video! I myself will do everything BUT taking the Lower off 😂. U made it look achievable but I’d have something kick my butt lol. Thanks for sharing!!!!
Great video - Very, very useful man! Thanks. My only question would be if it is OK to have the motor trimmed up when you add the gear oil to the drain hole. Seems like having the motor trimmed up would mean there is more oil in the lower unit before it flows out the overflow hole? Or is that amount of extra fluid not a big deal?
Very well done sir!!!! Easy to follow along, video quality excellent. 30 mins. may seem like a long video to watch but it covered all aspects of a 300 hour service concisely. Getting the back hose off the fuel separator is a biatch and I know you could not show it due to the tight space and need for two hands. Do you have any tips?
Parts list? I’m trying to find a 300hr service kit for my 250proxs with a sport master lower but the only kits I see are for a torpedo lower. Any help would be awesome, thank you!!
Whoever watches this video and performs this task of removing the lower unit and replacing the water pump he leaves out very important details. I did exactly as he said, and I put the lower unit back on the engine and it’s stuck in reverse. Called my local dealer you have to leave the boat in neutral, you have to physically take pliers or a specialty tool go down inside the lower unit turn turn the shifting mechanism into forward the prop rotates clockwise, and the shaft rotates clockwise lineup the shifter on the motor while it’s in neutral and that’s the only way to get it to line back up. Then you hit the trim button and it takes it out of gear. Put it back in neutral I’m pissed off.
When you put your gear lube back in your case isn't leaving the motor trimmed up putting too much lube back in the unit or does it matter how the motor sits when the oil starts to come back out ?
Good question, it doesn’t matter either way it fills the lower with the proper amount of lube. With the top whole vented it lets out any excess that it doesn’t need.
I have a Mercury smart craft gauge that tells me the hours everytime I start my motor, if you don’t have one you have to take it to an authorized Merc dealer and they’ll plug it in to tell you
I just used scrap pieces of 2x4. I believe I had to make the top slot where the lower rests on like 7.5" wide which was wide enough to fit it in but also small enough to hold it.
Great video! Concise yet informative. I hate when guys ramble for 5 minutes before showing the actual maintenance lol.
I appreciate it!

My tip is to be patient with it, it is not easy😂😂flathead screwdriver goes a longgg ways
I don't think you should be filling that much lube in the gearcase. It should be level when filling. It's only supposed to be to the vent level.
Do you have the engine in neutral when you drop the lower for the water pump? Great video!
What was the tool you used to change the serpentine belt
Great Video.
leave that damn orange cap off seen them spin off get chewed up and sucked into the ihtake

Thought I put in the video not to touch that shift knob inside the lower, but yes 4 strokes are electronic shifting ALWAYS leave it in neutral.

Which grease did you use?
One other question, how do you check engines hours? I have a 2022 Ranger Angler 2080 with a Merc 250hp Pro XS 4 stroke.

Whats the best thing to use for a DIY lower unit stand?
