It is 6:00 in the morning, today we are walking around Winchester. Winchester is a cathedral city in the county of Hampshire on the edge of the South Downs National Park in the south of England. Today we start our walk next to the River Itchen. In a couple of minutes we see the fast water flowing under a restored 18th century mill. Winchester is full of history, we walk past lots of interesting places and finish our walk around the cathedral, it's grounds and surrounding buildings. First though let's have a little walk around the city. Soon we will see the striking statue of King Alfred the Great. In the 9th century King Alfred changed the Roman street structure of Winchester establishing a new grid system to provide defence against invading Vikings. We then have a wander in the Abbey Gardens park, where St Mary’s Abbey once stood it was the largest religious house in England before being demolished by order of King Henry VIII. The Abbey Gardens are now a relaxing public park area with benches to sit on, a play area and cafe. At about halfway into our walk we get our first glimpse of the cathedral. The cathedral is a Grade I listed building, which means it is a building of exceptional interest. The cathedral has stunning gothic architecture and is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe. The original cathedral was founded in 642, surviving several viking attacks. In the year 901 the second cathedral church is completed. Building of a new Norman style cathedral starts in 1079 and is completed in 1093. In the 14th century elements of the building are reworked into a more impressive gothic style. In 1640 during the English Civil War the building is trashed by soldiers. In 1817 Jane Austen, aged 41, dies in Winchester and is buried in the cathedral originally her gravestone had no mention of being a writer over the years extra memorials are added to celebrate her work. At the beginning of the 19th century the cathedral walls are breaking apart. In 1906 a deep sea diver called William Walker starts work to save the building working for 6 hours a day, for 6 years in the pitch dark he stops the water flooding the building to pump it dry so the foundations can be rebuilt. The cathedral has a fascinating history, these days it is a popular tourist destination. It has also been used as a filming location for Netflix's The Crown, Dan Brown’s mystery thriller The Da Vinci Code, starring Tom Hanks, the acclaimed BBC miniseries adaption of Wolf Hall and an episode of The Ruth Rendell Mysteries. We even toured the long lofts above the knave, walking a narrow wooden gangway... a visit never to be forgotten. Your video helped to enhance my memories. Thanks. Rodney, now eighty eight. In Galicia (northwestern Spain) it rains a lot and that is why we have a beautiful green landscape, but it is frustrating how that natural beauty is clouded by architectural ugliness, especially in rural areas. I was amazed when I traveled through the French countryside and saw how well looked after the aesthetics, just like in England.

I lived in Winchester for a year but would have happily stayed for much longer. As well as its obvious beauty, it feels very safe and friendly. Great place to bring up kids, I imagine.

I first learned that Winchester had a gridded street system in Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth. They're so ubiquitous here in the US, but I had no idea anywhere in the UK had a grid system.
I know, I didn't know this either until I started researching the area. I would love to visit the US one day, so many places I'd like to walk around that I have seen on TV, film or RUclips.

Excellent! Thank You for making and sharing this video. It was like actually being there. I had no idea about the history of that Cathedral. It is truly beautiful and very special. And the gardens as well . I live near the mountains in Montana U.S.A. , it is pretty here but nothing compared to the beauty of your part of the world. We don't have the ancient buildings and ruins. I am blessed to experience them on RUclips. I hope to make it to England someday and see "Brocklesby Estate", home of my ancestors. At the moment my health prevents the trip. All of your videos are very good. I plan to watch all of them.

Hello, and thank you for another of your wonderful and fascinating walks. As a medieval historian ( retired ) I have visited Winchester many, many times, yet there always seemed to be something more I needed to see :)
For those planning to visit the Cathedral, they should note the sight of the earlier Saxon cathedral, the position of which is laid out on the ground. Then Inside the building, it is interesting to note some decidedly unskilled and wobbly masonry work. Fascinating also, to see the undulating floor ( due to subsidence ) but still with many of the original medieval tiles.Housed inside the Williams Room, there is the magnificent Winchester Bible, dating from the 1100`s and possibly the most beautiful illuminated Bible ever produced !!!!!
Of course there is much else to see around Winchester, but you have provided a marvelous video tour - well done and thank you once again :)

This one was great. I was in Winchester in late-October, 2019, just before the first news of COVID began to hit in November. I walked around the city and the country around it a lot. It was fantastic to watch this and be taken back two years and remember that trip. Hopefully once travel is easier again, I'll make it back.

I visited Wincester when I was a student, and stayed with a college friend who had studied in their illustrious school. It was all so charming, it really influenced me. Cathedrals are like time travel triggers for me. So many years of vision and effort, and it’s lovely to be able to enjoy seeing it the way you film. Thank you.
