  • In this Hebrew for beginners lesson, we will talk about the Hebrew basics - sounds, vowels, and consonants. Those are the fundamentals of the language. Here you will learn the pronunciation.
The sounds we make in Hebrew, create the words. Before you master words and vocabulary in Hebrew, it is best to understand the structure of those sounds and how they serve as the building blocks of the Hebrew language.
In Hebrew, you will find several types of consonants. Guttural for example.
It all depends on where we close our vocal tract. Fully or partially. For example, the letter Pe (פ) in Hebrew is created in the lips. Just like the English P.
    That is not all.
If we want to create more than just sounds, we need to add the vowels. This will create full words for us and allow us to communicate clearly.

@Hebrew with Ben: Thanks for the lesson! I have a question. In one of the examples above you say there are 5 sounds in the word אִחֵר . I see 5 letters, but 5 sounds? I thought the letter א isn't pronounced, why do you call it a sound then? Thanks again!

      Hi, thanks for asking.
At 02:26 we have the word אחר that starts with the letter Aleph.
The first letter Aleph is consonantal. Not a mother of reading. Meaning, we hear it and it is not a part of the vowel. It is counted as a sound in this case.
5 sounds: Aleph, Het, and Resh, 3 consonants PLUS the vowels 'ee'(on the א), and 'e'(on the ח). Total of 5 sounds.
      Makes sense?

Ancient Hebrew is not my strong suit. Not many native Hebrew speakers have a deep understanding of the earlier versions of Hebrew. Let me ask you, how far you go back? The Hebrew Bible is written in Hebrew that is very similar to modern Hebrew. If you go all the way back to the Phoenician version of Hebrew and earlier
(historic kingdoms of Israel and Judah), I can't help you with that. Sorry :)
