  • The Point or Pick Soldering Tool Sucks and Was Invented by The DEVIL (There is an Easier Way!)-Learning how to use a point or pick soldering tool may not be your best option when jewelry soldering . My favorite is tweezers for picking up and placing solder, rather than using the point or pick soldering tool, and I'll explain how and why. Lots of traditional metalsmithing methods do things the hard way and I think that is just silly. Point or pick soldering is a jewelry soldering technique lots of beginners should just skip.
    You can purchase these tweezers or any of my other favorites here:

    I'm so glad I saw this. I didn't buy a pick with my other supplies, and I was not happy about having to pause everything until I found/made one

      If you eventually find a use for it, then fine but I don't recommend this method for beginners. :)

    Oh that’s really helpful! Kept feeling I should learn the pick method- now I can just stop trying! 🙃

      Lol, forget about the pick for now! If you ever find you need it you can always pick it up.

    I'm learning how to solder... I LOVE your approach... honest and to the point... no pun intended. I love how to try to make it easier for us newbies. Wish you lived closer to Montana. Hugs

    I’m a newbie and after watching a Lot of videos and explanations of all kinds, I concluded that jewelry making is still using ancient methods for many things that can actually be improved by some out of the box thinking like you do. That pick is iron and it’s also quite easy to overheat and distort. I completely agree with you : use the Steel tweezers instead !

      I could not agree with you more! I love the ancient techniques but we owe it to ourselves to question everything to find the best methods. :)

    GOOD point Jeannette! i was trying to learn with the pick and then started picking up tweezers and now most often use that and i find myself, faster, more accurate and less stressed or frustrated! AMEN sista!

      I know, RIGHT!?! I hate how everyone pushes the pick when the tweezers are so much easier and better. :)

    I agree. I do use soldering picks on occasion but more often I reach for my tweezers.

    I'm still relatively new and open minded where soldering technique is concerned. Personally, I would love to be proficient at pick soldering because I'd probably melt less silver doing it that way (especially on small wires, chain links, and jump rings). LOL! Like you said, anyone can get good at anything if they try hard and long enough but I was actually hoping you'd demonstrate how your way is better. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

    Exactly how are tweezers better than picks when soldering?

    • @JewelryArts
      @JewelryArts  2 года назад +1

      Like I explained in the video, you can pick up or move the solder easily with tweezers, while with a pick, you can only poke the solder. :)
