    I bought my cane 15 years ago or so and never had to use it for self defense. I do use it for my hip though.

    When it comes to self defense or self protection, almost all martial arts will claim their techniques will work. I'm 78 and have been practicing martial arts since I was 3 years old. I can tell you three absolutes about any martial art. First, any technique of any selected art does NOT work all the time. If a techniques did work all the time, it would supersede all other martial arts and they would fade into the mist of past life. The second absolute is that if you do not train regularly, the chances of completing any series of techniques successfully are greatly reduced. The third absolute is that in a physical confrontation with an attacker, the aftermath of the confrontation will have mental and psychological repercussions whether you "win" or "lose" during the confrontation, there will always be some form of post traumatic stress (PTSD).

    Some of those canes have an angled tip on the hook side. The martial arts types say that this "chisel tip" is an important part of using a cane as self-defense tool. Maybe that's true for them. For most of us, the chisel tip is important because it's easier to slip into a pocket or between our pants and our shirt when we need to use both hands for something. One wouldn't think that the rounded tip would be that much harder to get into those positions, but it is. People considering a cane for walking or self-defense should get that chisel tip on the hook end because hooking the cane through some item of clothing when two hands are needed really will be that much easier. Even if I had to defend myself, I really don't think that I'd ever strike with the hook end. I think that would make the cane too easy for an attacker to grab. All that pain compliance stuff with the chisel tip is great for the martial artists, but for most of us, the chisel tip is just convenient.

    • @effeojnedib7208
      @effeojnedib7208 3 года назад +2

      I agree 100% The chisel tip makes it lots easier to slip into a pocket, pants or belt. The joint lock stuff is for arresting people, not self defense.

    Good video! I have a Lucite cane, is it as good as a wooden cane, for self-defense? I am 74 years old and I need to use a cane for balancing and propulsion.

    • @oldkarate
      @oldkarate 3 года назад +3

      You didn't get an answer, so I'll try. Lucite is strong but brittle. In all likelihood you'll break it in practice hitting a bag. I broke a bamboo bo in practice a few years ago so anything that's brittle is going to be a problem. You can go to a thrift shop and get a wooden cane cheap that will suffice. I have a number of them that I practice with.

    I'm a 76 y/o male.. so i feel I can say this. Looking at the way the women are hitting the dummy they would not hurt the attacker..Maybe me..but not a young man or woman, It would just make them mad and they would just take the cane away.. This will only give them false security! They need to train to use MACE or a light 5-shot 22 pistol!!!.. That being said I am interested in using the cane defense. But I will train before even thinking about carrying one. I exercise with resistance bands for strength 3-4 times a week. Therefore I may be able to use the cane with force. But if after practicing I feel I'm not fast or strong enough I will go back to my LCR..

      I WOULD'NT HAVE SAID THIS BUT BCSE YOU ALREADY BROUGHT IT UP, PLSE ALLOW ME TO ADD THAT YOU SHOULD TRAIN WITH AN IRON WALKING STICK (AT HOME) AND EXCHANGE IT WITH A WOODEN LIGHTER ONE FOR THE STREET ; BCSE IT'S NOT ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO HIT AN OPPONENT, YOUR BLOW MUST MAKE HIM CONCLUDE THAT HIS FIRST ASSESSMENT OF YOU AS A TOTTERING OLD GEEZER WAS VERY VERY WRONG

    • @islandknight6105
      @islandknight6105 2 года назад +1

      I kinda agree with you. The worse thing would be to give the attacker the weapon you planned to use on him. Result probably wouldn’t be pretty. And with multiple young attackers, the average older person would easily get “rushed” by one of them. Again not a great result. … The contents of your purse should be given up first. …If the attacker is bent on physical assault rather than robbery, then do the best with whatever you can to save yourself from great bodily harm or death.

    Sorry folks but the cane is a tool to aid us walking for protection I suggest a small 38 snub nose lightweight revolver comes with no hammer to get caught in your pocket. After you shoot the bad guy use your cane to poke him to make sure he's dead before you turn your back on him.
