Among Milan's back-four there was a concern that he could break the young inexperience Paolo Maldini. I think that dude only touched the ball twice through the entire match, and didn't have a single shot on goal. It was the first moment I got a feeling that Maldini would fit ok with the other Milan defenders. Baresi, Tassotti, Costacurta, were already established at that time, but I still didn't think that skinny Maldini boy would be the last piece in AC Milan's legendary back-four. Baresi was seriously a big name at that time, to think that there was a young boy playing beside him was crazy. The rest is history.

I saw 2003 CL final. After that i became a fan of Italian defenders. In 2006 WC everybody were saying Brazil or Argentina were going to win. But i knew it was the time for Italy with their impregnable defence Maldini Nesta Cannavaro Zambrotta and a well balanced midfield and forward line.
This entire defensive unit was selected to play in World Cup, haven't seen anything like that again...sadly probably never. Ironically the goalie of Milan at that time was not chosen to be part of the World Cup squad in 1994. My guess is because he was too well protected by this defense so he did not have enough opportunities to showcase his skills. Anyways, this is the best 4 men defensive unit the world has ever seen.
The goalie was a major factor in the defense of Milan in the first half of 90's. Rossi paid the bad press, no youth reputation(he arrives without particular expectations from Cesena, a serie A low-ranked team) and a very very rude temper in the pitch(This was a problem as well for the national team). His contribution was always greatly underestimated.

I say swap Vidić and Roberto Carlos as Vidić was a better defensive player than Carlos , R.carlos wasn't a great defensive player but was more like average as a defensive player while Vidić was a monster of a defensive player .
I remember reading somewhere that these 4 defenders at the time were also the faster players sprinting in the 100 meters races, during summer's training in the AC Milan squad (25 players)together with one of the dutch(don't remeber if Gullit or Riijkaard),so imagine how hard was for a striker get pass this Ac Milan defense....with Sacchi they used to press high in the field,but were also able to get back to their position very fast!!

well , this is debatable ... you can argue that Maldini , Nesta , Cafu and Stam were just as good as this lineup ( personally I prefer Nesta or Stam over Costacurta and Cafu over Tassotti ) .. either way , both these lineups are better than any other team had in history

well , this is debatable ... you can argue that Maldini , Nesta , Cafu and Stam were just as good as this lineup ( personally I prefer Nesta or Stam over Costacurta and Cafu over Tassotti ) .. either way , both these lineups are better than any other team had in history

The other lineup reached 5 CL finals, won 3 of them (3 clean sheets), won 5 Serie A titles (including an unbeaten 91-92 season). That 00s line-up obviously had individual star power, but Stam only won a Super Coppa at Milan 🤷♂️
