That's truly impressive! Especially when Jim mentioned that John was out of work at the time(with John's permission), and emphasized the importance of every chance he took with not only his championship, but the value of everything he was playing for, including that $72,000 cash jackpot. That HAD to have made pulling off a win like that worthwhile! R.I.P. Jim Perry.
I love it when John Goss goes "Oh my God!" and the audience and Jim Perry goes wild! This is what I'm talking about! Suspense! You don't know what's going to happen until it happens and when it gets there, BAM, you can't believe it! No wonder this is my favorite game show of all time!
My older brother used to watch that show and Scrabble when he was a kid growing up! Nowadays, Buzzr airs the show, and I said it before and I'll say it again: WE WANT BUZZR ON OUR CABLE SYSTEMS ONE DAY!

I remember watching this exact episode when it aired in reruns on USA. He was the first syndicated lot winner. Helaine Lowey (spelling?) won the lot 14 shows later for a $64,000 jackpot. Alice Conkright (who didn't buy a single instant bargain) won 27 shows later for a $77,000 jackpot. The last syndicated lot winner (before SotC went to the Winners' Board format) was Tim Holleran (from Black Rock, CT) who won a $90,000 cash jackpot.
Good thing he won all that cash as well, given the federal and state income tax and sales tax he will have to pay on all the prizes! That's one good thing about SOC ..
When John first hit $95, Chip had $40. That means Chip would have to have gotten 11 questions less than 60 seconds to tie John. If I were John, I would have just not answered any questions until Chip (or Naomi) got anywhere close. Imagine if he got $95 and ended up with less than $95.
I wish Buzzer channel would do follow-ups on these big winners (the ones who are still alive), to show what they eventually ended up doing with their prizes and $$s and how they are doing today ...
Charles "Chip" Esten who won big on Sale Of The Century in 1988 is an actor and musician. I think LaRae Dillman another big winner is still alive. She also appeared on Blockbusters and $25,000 Pyramid.
Jim Perry would had been a great car salesman. He could definitely convince you to buy something. He also could flirt very well with the ladies on the show....RIP, Mr. Perry, you were one of the best game show hosts.
Too bad he didn't win the Jaguar instead .. One thing that I thought was always unfair about SOC is how they change the prizes while the same contestant is returning ... IMHO they should keep the same prizes until there is another winner ...
I absolutely agree with you there. Once a champion wins every prize the show had presented when they began their journey, then you replace them with new ones.
1:55-4:12, a camping trailer, a computer room desk, a ladies' diamond ring, dining room furniture, a carnivale vacation, the Nissan 300CX and THE CASH JACKPOT OF $72,000! A GRAND TOTAL OF $156,339!
As they go to commercial you can hear what I'm sure is canned audience added in; one cheer I've heard I'm sure on NBC Mghs is something like "yeeeee whooooo"
Yeah, I want TEMPTATION: The New Sale of the Century back. I think it's best the returning champion's goal should be at least $2,000 or more instead of the 5-day winning limit. But wait until September of next year (2009).
As of 2016, he's a semi-retired real estate agent in suburban Dallas, Texas; I knew a guy who was his live-in boyfriend for a while. He also appeared on "$25K Pyramid," "Jeopardy," and "Now You See It" among others.
Greg Palmer No, episode 17 aired yesterday (Wednesday). Episode 22 will be skipped, and this episode (23) will air on the 18th of December. Also, episode 26 will be skipped as well.
Hmm. I'm actually working on a fan video for Sale. Mitt I have two things I need to ask you. How big was the prize gallery? And two, can you get me a clean copy of the theme song used the later years as an MP3?
4:08, “John, you’re walking outta here with all the prizes and THIS!!!!!!!! CHARLIE O, TELL US ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!”-Jim Perry. “THE CASH JACKPOT OF SEVENTY-TWO THOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUSAND DOLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ($72,000)”-Charlie O’Donnell.
Including Bill Fogel (who won his Jackpot-clinching game with $145), who needed only $39...THIRTY-NINE DOLLARS...to win $62,000 plus all the prizes on the stage. Not to mention David Rogers, who won the $109,000 Cash Jackpot (I wouldn't mind that, but I would have gone on to try for $110,000 and the prizes).
I am SO glad that they changed the shopping rules in the Syndicated version so that they only way to win the Cash Jackpot was to amass $750 to buy the lot and the money. In the Daytime version, you could buy the Cash Jackpot before buying the lot and everything. Only ONE player, Barbara Phillips, bought everything and the jackpot, while everyone else chickened out and bought the Jackpot.
So they had another cash jackpot winner 23 shows previous... No wonder they had to keep changing the format, the production company (given this is syndicated) was probably going bankrupt.
To be fair, that was NBC who aired the show, which was known to be able to have bigger payouts (unlike CBS that had a max winnings cap), plus remember the risk factor of losing the next show and losing that chance to get something big in order to go for it all. You wouldn't think people would be daring enough to take the risk of losing to go for it all...or to have such daring people also being as smart as they were.
Episode 22(the episode before this one) was skipped by GSN, and this aired today. COuld the players see the scores from offstage like on Jeopardy!. I think he'd have not buzzed in any more once he hit $95 the first time, given there wasn't enough time left on the clock for 10 questions for the other players to catch up at that point?
Thank you , I like your reply . I had to stay shut up from commenting because I usually tell judgemental idiots who couldn't answer one of those questions what I really think
Yes, John was (is) gay. Unfortunately, the friend/lover in the video is no longer with us. However, later in the 2000s, I knew a guy who dated John for several years. Things are a lot different now as they were back then; not my choice of life; but like another poster said, "to each his own"
I don't know if it was mentioned on the show; but he was a school teacher. He quit because of politics. I knew his boyfriend. He, too, was a teacher. Nothing wrong with his lifestyle and/or not having a family of his own at middle age. I don't; and really, I don't miss it for the world.

Jim Perry really cemented his legacy as a host on Sale Of The Century. One of the GOATs in game show history.
I liked the way Jim kept saying "RIGHT!" whenever John got a question correct. He really said that with very big enthusiasm.
WHAT A WIN! I love going on a nostalgia binge.
