Jim Perry was incredibly gracious to me. As a nervous kid, just out of school, he made it his business to make me feel comfortable as I progressed through 11 shows. He kept plugging my nascent comedy career and never missed a chance to set me up for a punch line. A gentleman, and an extremely talented host - he makes it look simple. In three days, he helped change the course of my life. It was a huge thrill for me, just 7 years later, to have him as a guest on MY show. RIP Jim.

M Decarlo, I agree we would love to see who u beat to start ur run on SOTC? Also why did ur show Studs end? Ur a great guy and great host on it. I watched it as a kid😀

Also one more question, would u ever host another game show and if so which one? Maybe a revival of SOTC? For a million $$ prize at the end?

You know I don't mind. Once when I was 23, I went on a game show. That of course changed my life!

April 8, 1985 was a historic day for $OTC. Mark won the entire lot that day on the NBC edition. Later that day (or night, depending on where you were), the "infamous" Alice Conkright won the entire lot on the syndicated edition. Unlike Mark, who had a challenging speed round and won on a tiebreaker when his opponent got the question wrong, Alice dominated the game, especially the speed round. She won the entire lot in six days, a record for $OTC (U.S. version). She rejected every Instant Sales bargain during her reign (this is what makes her "infamous"), with Jim on his knees begging, pleading and "crying", to no avail. Among the Instant Bargain she rejected: a trip to Hawaii (to which she's never been, according to her). On top of that, she defeated Michael Friedman, who was going for the lot himself. This episode with Mark and the one with Alice, should be shown back-to-back.

I saw his car win on 4/1/85 right after Ruth's win on Press Your Luck.

Sale of the Century was the one daytime game that saw a lot of champions walk away with over $100,000 in winnings
