Thank you for hosting this, for hosting your other CC series, for WheezyWaiter and for everything you do. Congratulations on your budding family! We will miss you, even while eagles everywhere are feeling relieved to see you go
HAHAHA the final "no" getting 'no' reaction and just continuing with the script!! Your sense of humor is GOLD. You are all the things you mentioned hoping to be in this episode. In a single word, phenomenal.
Craig, you made film history so much fun to learn. So interesting too. I came to this playlist on a whim, but you managed to get me to stay until the very end. Thanks for the knowledge and entertainment. :)
Maya Deren's work is so beautiful. Her attempts at creating experiences are completely successful and some of my favorite films period. At Land is my personal favorite.
I hope that the new host continue the legacy on hitting the eagle, i think is what Craig would want it :) Thanks Craig for be part of my Crash Course experience it was awesome and good luck in whatever you going to do next
"RUclips poop" is a good example of experimental techniques being alive and well today. Despite being seen as immature in nature, many visual/editing memes also seem to draw from this. Sidenote: while working fro a cable company I had several customers asking about how the scientific community was reacting to the megaladon and mermaid sightings from two popular mockuentaries that were running at the time, not knowing they were works of fiction.
Missed the obvious reference to one of my favorite movies, My Winnipeg which is both an experimental film and (kind of) a documentary. They did name check Guy Maddin though, so close enough.
This was a fun journey. Would've liked it to be more in depth but each and every episode was very informative. Thank you Craig and Crash Course for this.
Since we are talking about experimentation on film and the ambiguity of truth on some documentaries, there is a film called F for Fake, made by Orson Welles --the genius behind Citizen Kane --, who got himself amidst this medium to make the mentioned essay film. The main focus of the film is the history of an art forger who lives in Ibiza, then shifting to the forger's biographer who also became a forger when he wrote the fictional biography of Howard Hughes. While Orson tell these stories, he himself tells the forgeries behind his body of art, telling how he pretended to be a famous actor in his youth to convincing the USA that martians were invading earth --and it is especially fascinating if taking into account the endless tricks he performed to make Citizen Kane one of the most bold films ever made. I highly recommend it.
For example District 9 has a mockumentary stile for almost the first half of the movie. Also Stargate Universe and Battlestar Galactica (the new one) have a little of documentary-style shots. For example the CGI of the ships in space have camera wiggles and bad focusing after zoom-in to simulate a camerta operator taking live shots of action.
I'm really happy that this series at least touched on experimental film. I'm also terribly disappointed that it never touched on animated film, another aspect of filmmaking that could have an entire series devoted only to it.
Maggie Orr it also didn’t mention one of, if not the, greatest experimental documentaries of all time. Man with a Movie Camera. It mentions Triumph of the Will, which is a terrible film not just due to subject matter, but not MwaMC. Terribly disappointed
@@fromthebackseat4865 he actually did mention man with a movie camera. Actually spent a minute or two talking about it. Just not in this episode and I don't remember which episode it was in. But he definitely mentioned it
deatheater3716 oh and I’ll have to try and find if. I absolutely love MWaMC. I hate how a lot of film studies courses elevate the garbage that is Triumph of the Will as if it’s some technical masterpiece when it’s not that at all, it’s propaganda that holds very little if any cinematic merit. But these people are propping it up and inflating it’s worth, proving how effective it is as propaganda I guess.
I feel both these subjects should have been given their own episodes. This episode felt like both were crammed in together as if this were more like cliff notes rather than the entire book!
My favourite documentary is Surf's Up. It's an interview-style documentary about SURFING PENGUINS. How can anybody not find that awesome? Wait, it's a *mock*umentary!?
I was surprised Terrance Malick didn't come up for his tendency to nest an experimental film in a feature film. and how he and Lynch continue to impact TV a la Twin Peaks, Mr. Robot and (with Saul Bass) the intros to many HBO/Showtime/STARZ products
Not really, you can tell by moments that David is annoyed at the director's search for artsy visuals. No dreamy stuff. It isn't that hard to piss off David Lynch.
It's an absolute delight that the aim of experimental film is to create art that is to be experienced and felt rather than be straightforwardly understood. It challenges us to go against any established logos. In life, certainty is elusive yet humans are control freaks. We are preposterously hellbent on asserting power and mastery over the universe, brought by Western humanism and the Enlightenment. Instead, it might be helpful for us to just simply recognize and accept the limits to how much can be possibly known and controlled.
This was such a good.. "sub-series?" Is that the word? Anyway, I loved it and I will miss Craig. You guys should bring back more old hosts. (Psst... Phil Plait). Huh? What? I didn't say anything... Excited for Film Production with Lily Gladstone, though.
So how would you classify the Qatsi Trilogy? It has a clear social/environmental message, but it uses no verbal messages to deliver it, just images and music.
Okay, when the series first started I was a little taken back by Craig, only because like his voice is so animated and his mannerisms are so... not? Also he like never blinks like ever! That's not the point though.Over the series I saw how hysterical Craig is, like he's really funny, so this episode is a lil bittersweet. Also is Stan Brakhage in Cannibal! The Musical? I feel like he has a cameo in that. Maybe I'm making it up i dunno.
Are you all going to go over the Sundance Film Festival and other independent film festivals? I figured that would have been covered in this... There is SO MUCH you can do with this CC series.
It has been a pleasure talking at you all these past 16 videos! I love film and I love you and I hate eagles. *punches eagle*
Thank you for hosting this, for hosting your other CC series, for WheezyWaiter and for everything you do. Congratulations on your budding family! We will miss you, even while eagles everywhere are feeling relieved to see you go
why are you leaving us!
The Primal Earth His contact is over. Talent like that doesn't just work for free, you know!
Too bad cuz the eagles won the super bowl. hehe
Why do you punch eagles???
No more Craig?! I am crushed!
Craig? Nooooooo!
I hope future Crash Course series borrow some of Craig's techniques (e.g, talking with the cameraman for comedic effect).
Can we have a moment of silence for the loss of the "eagle punch"?
He borrowed that from John, way back in World History...
Craig is a wonderful fit for Crash Course. I hope to see him back sometime soon!
Don't leave us. You're already my teacher. I'm afraid of change!
Hey, isn't that the horse fron Horsin' Around?
'What We Do in the Shadows' in a great mockumentary
Thank you Craig! You did an awesome job, and we all wish you the best!!
Thank you, Craig. I enjoyed your insights and presentations. Hope to see you again, soon!
You're my favorite profoundly beautiful abstraction intended to soothe me, Craig.
Oh no, we are losing Craig! :(
Fair well, Craig. It's been an honor and a pleasure to be taught by you.
RIP in Spaghetti Craig Benzine.
Eagle punching will never get old.
Never Forgetti.
Life goals: to be a profoundly beautiful abstraction intended to soothe you.
Props for the: "I'm not your guy buddy." Reference.
I really got to liking Craigs sense of humor...
:(
TheAdnro please go binge watch wheezywaiter!! It's Craig's main channel!
Then go to his main channel, WheezyWaiter!
He also did CC US Politics
Agreed!
Marcelo Zuniga You say that like it’s a bad thing.
Maya Deren's work is so beautiful. Her attempts at creating experiences are completely successful and some of my favorite films period. At Land is my personal favorite.
Thanks to the entire Crash Course team. Great for intro to international cinema
Damn Craig was the best. Thank you for this amazing crash course.
Planet hearth II is the highest rated imdb tv series of all time
The being destroyer of worlds now it is chernobyl hbo
I hope that the new host continue the legacy on hitting the eagle, i think is what Craig would want it :)
Thanks Craig for be part of my Crash Course experience it was awesome and good luck in whatever you going to do next
The graphic with the rejected terms for documentary made me laugh so much. Thanks!

Craig, you have made Film come alive, and interesting to me. Thank you Craig!
Please keep making more 🥺. I need more you!
Who else was hoping he would mention The Office when he started to talk about mock-umentaries
😄😄😄
Rachie- Face I was a little sad they didn't. Always great to see good old Michael Scott!
i was waiting for that
My thought went immediately towards "Modern Family"
I was hoping there would be mention of docufiction like Animal Planet's Mermaids documentaries.
The Office is better.
Really enjoying the series so far - Craig you were really good at presenting!
Missed the obvious reference to one of my favorite movies, My Winnipeg which is both an experimental film and (kind of) a documentary. They did name check Guy Maddin though, so close enough.
The mockumentary "Star Trek: Prelude to Axanar" is one of the best you'll find on RUclips in the syfy realm. Thumbs up!
We will miss you Craig.
Nobody can punch an eagle like you. :(
Thanks Craig, you've been awesome.
This was a fun journey. Would've liked it to be more in depth but each and every episode was very informative. Thank you Craig and Crash Course for this.
PLEASE DO A SERIES ON MUSIC HISTORY and Thank you for including Begotten. I was getting worried for a second. This Series is my favorite one so far.
Oh, Planet Earth, I'm obsessed with Sir David. Thanks Craig, I enjoy your somehow surly delivery.
Thank you for introducing me to Ross McElwee. It finally resolved one of my issues I had with Southern American art :)
Thanks for 16 fun episodes, Craig! :-)
I will miss you craig! come back for more series please!!! I am excited top see where this series goes with the new host though....
This was one of the best Crash Courses
Bummer that Craig's episodes are over
I cannot concentrate expecting the eagle to be punched
Unusual omissions: Michael Moore (love or hate him) and 'Koyaanisqatsi'.
We'll miss you Craig! And good luck to the new host :)
Thanks Craig!
Can we have an episode on animation? Cause to me a group of pictures is one thing, but drawing the pictures out of your imagination is another.
THAT CLONE HIGH REFERENCE THOUGH *whispers* payaya

I completed your whole course within a day. Yeah, you are a great teacher.
Thank you thank you for this amazing series. Thanks!
Awe Craig... I loved you and eagle punch. But I always love the unlovable sad sack in every show. Team Craig 4 Life!
For example District 9 has a mockumentary stile for almost the first half of the movie.

Oh damnit. Yes. That eye scene. I was wondering if you'd show it, haha.
First documentary was a 1914 Georgian film cataloging Georgian poets Travels to Rural regions.
I'm really happy that this series at least touched on experimental film. I'm also terribly disappointed that it never touched on animated film, another aspect of filmmaking that could have an entire series devoted only to it.

Forcemaster2000
I couldn't agree more.
Is Crash Course suffering from budget issues?
Craig I hope you return to Crash Course again even if it isn't for film history
Surprised to see there was no mention of Jodorowsky or John waters. Even though I did catch a pink flamingo easter egg in there.
I love Sherman's March!
RIGHT? It's so adorable.
We'll miss you, Craig!
I will miss the 'eagle punching Craig'.
He knocked the popcorn out of that eagle 😭
Haha, cool - Magikarp guy made it into the thumbnail/episode title card, and even into film history!
My favourite documentary is Surf's Up. It's an interview-style documentary about SURFING PENGUINS. How can anybody not find that awesome?
Wait, it's a *mock*umentary!?
I seriously love wheezy waiter and his sense of humor!
What no!? I just watched the end!! I don't want him to leave!!!
Please do a series on documentaries. Oh, and a Shakespeare Series!
im currently working on a documentary and we start production this january, 2018. will def show this to the crew
I was surprised Terrance Malick didn't come up for his tendency to nest an experimental film in a feature film. and how he and Lynch continue to impact TV a la Twin Peaks, Mr. Robot and (with Saul Bass) the intros to many HBO/Showtime/STARZ products
Great series, thank you so much!
I heard the term Cinema Verite before but didn't understand what it meant. Thanks for informing!
It's so funny that I used to think you were a bit hard to understand; now I have to struggle if I want to hear your unique speech pattern
I feel soothed.
Ill be honest i dont know half of what Film history episodes are about but i watch b/c Craig's smart clone is pretty cool
Thank you for the parts that are not false.
I didn't realize I was a Beard-lover while loving Craig on this channel. I presumed I was a Movie-learner.
"The Art Life," a recent bio-documentary about David Lynch, is a game changer for that genre.
Not really, you can tell by moments that David is annoyed at the director's search for artsy visuals. No dreamy stuff. It isn't that hard to piss off David Lynch.
Will the new host talk as fast as you? You convey A LOT of information, I've enjoyed your videos. Thank you.
im gunna miss you craig :(
No more wheezy how can I go on with my life without him
I'm going to watch some of these
Don't leave!! :'(
I really wish Crash Course would have dedicated an episode on the history of the Academy

Amazing series of film history! But where can I find the subtitle in word file?
So long Craig, and thanks for all the fish... er, film
Where do the movie Close Up fit in?
Craig, you DO soothe me...😙😙😙😙😙
Thanks Wheezy! If you guys wanna see more of him, just hop on over to WheezyWaiter for less educational but more absurdly comedic videos
This was such a good.. "sub-series?" Is that the word? Anyway, I loved it and I will miss Craig. You guys should bring back more old hosts. (Psst... Phil Plait). Huh? What? I didn't say anything...
Excited for Film Production with Lily Gladstone, though.
I think my heart just broke a little because Craig is gone.
So how would you classify the Qatsi Trilogy? It has a clear social/environmental message, but it uses no verbal messages to deliver it, just images and music.
I miss this
Ah nick, do that experimental film XD I want more Craig!!
Okay, when the series first started I was a little taken back by Craig, only because like his voice is so animated and his mannerisms are so... not? Also he like never blinks like ever! Great videos!
One Word: Sasha Grey
That's... two words?
...sssshhh no one will know
Are you all going to go over the Sundance Film Festival and other independent film festivals? I figured that would have been covered in this... There is SO MUCH you can do with this CC series.
Bring back Crash Course literature please!
