I personally don't see this as an upgrade to NA2+ but rather as a totally different style of a device. The beauty of the older note air is the insanely long battery life. I use mine only for work now and might charge it once a month or so which is ideal, I never have to worry about it. Even if it's on 10% I can still get through a work day just fine.
@@amaella1 agree, that battery life is something that I love about black and white e-ink. 2+ was a real high water mark. It was great that you could just pretty much forget about charging and just charge in the evening whenever you got the notification as you say, at like 10%.
@@KitBetts-MastersThat makes me curious about the Boox Max, as that is black and white, plus it’s 13.3 inches, similar to the Tab X, and has that keyboard case.
Indeed. I sold my NA3C because I found the screen to gray/dim but I'm in the market and interested if the screen is whiter indeed (without frontlight at all). Now, Boox said in the marketing it was whiter, it's my buying point. But well, I guess it isn't, they just ramped up the sensitivity of their front light slider. It smells like... Shame on you, boox if this is true!
Thank you so much for your hard and consistent work. I do not own any device of this type for the moment, and I discovered a lot through your videos 🙏 I might wait for the Note Air Max as a Uni student, but considering having a bit of color with this Note Air 4C
I don't see how they can really make Kaleido 3 substantially whiter, there's effectively no white, it's just the 3 RGB colours combined to trick our eyes into thinking it's white. Reflecting as much ambient light as possible is really the only thing they can do to improve it, and I suspect they done that the first time around, so only small gains or brighter backlights, which creates more glare ,could really offer improvements.

I was waiting and hoping for them to release the b/w update of the Note Air series first, as there is arguable a bigger upgrade to be had jumping to 300ppi. Also, there is no Boox alternative for 10,3 inch, 300ppi with backlight in their lineup. The NA4C is just an iterative and redundant upgrade in comparison.
I ended up returning my remarkable paper pro because it was so slow at task switching. I also found the contrast really poor. I splurged on an iPad Pro with the textured screen and it’s been amazing for everything except my wallet
Hahaha, yeah, that's exactly the reason I didn't e d up getting the iPad pro with Matte screen, but in any case, i don't think it would replace eink for not taking for me. How do you find writing on the OLED for long periods? Comfortable on your eyes?
I remember getting into eink about 15 years ago with a Kindle. At that time I could use it for hours everyday and the battery would last about a month on a single charge. Each new generation of eink devices reduces the battery life: from a month to weeks, then weeks to days, and now with BSR to a single day if you are lucky. This is not much different from a Windows laptop with LCD display. I love to read and eink has many benefits, but it seems the further things progress the more eink seems to regress. Boox: Please give us an option to disable BSR.
It would be interesting to see a comparison of pen stroke -> eraser -> pen stroke between the two. The 3C and the ultra tab c have a significant delay between pen down and rendering starting for the first stroke.
Using a remarkable pro, the screen is bigger, colors are brighter, the light though is a lot weaker. So I guess my next purchase will have to wait for the next Tab 13" with color and frontlight. But I love the fact that they pushed the light intensity up.Thanks for enlightening us on that addition.
it's still 600 bucks. you have to be insane paying this much for any e-ink note taking device while a simple pen and a simple paper notebook cost you like one dollar.
There’s a huge difference between these e-ink devices and pen-and-paper. You can’t store entire textbooks on pen-and-paper, and you would need to carry different-colored pens/pencils/highlighters with you everywhere. You would also need to carry the papers themselves, which are sensitive to moisture and crumple easily, you can have a drop of water on them and that can ruin a good chunk of the notes, you can write soldering incorrectly and now have to either rub the face to deface it while leaving a ghost of the previous notes, have a deep scribble to mark it out, or go with an entirely new page. I'm really looking forward to the full review. My majour question is, how does it hold up when reading heavy art filled PDF books like TTRPGs or even comics? Reading and notetaking are what I'd primarily use it for. I'm torn between E-Ink and regular tablets that work toward reducing eye strain, like the TCL NXTPAPER lineup (though I question the USA release), or the Huawei Matepad pro Papermatte, mainly because of the PDF issue, even good laptops lag sometimes while scrolling through art heavy PDF's. It's hard to find much here in the US, though. It seems like we don't get a lot of what you guys across the pond see. And I've tried a lot of good PDF reading apps, the fastest one I've found, Sumatra, sadly, doesn't seem to be available on tablets. I don't edit them often enough to pay for a PDF reader/editor, so I stick with the free options. Foxit is the best I've used for phones and tablets.

It won't be good I'm afraid, it needs a very specific API to drive the eink so that it makes a pen stroke in low latency, so apps designed for LCD OLED are only refreshing at the rate of the screen, so 15fps at best. It's not going to work for drawing. We need someone to develop an amazing eink art app!
Well, very nice. I have to slightly disagree with your assumption about the Gallery 3. The restrictions of G3 are well known to me, but it would still be cool to have an Onyx 13.3 inch option for it. I don't mind the flashing if the color picture is great. As I am mainly using my Tab X for reading PDFs, e-books, Comics and some websites, a Gallery 3 screen would be dope. Maybe they even could improve the screen a little. The Remarkable Paper Pro has a good screen, but I don't like the restrictions. No webbrowser and even no way to read CBR files or other more rare formats? Mehhhh ...
Yeah, I agree, but I think they have to think about what a Boox Gallery 3 device is like. It would certainly need to be marketed differently even if it doesn't need a while different operating system. They'd certainly need to work on the screen modes to get it working brilliantly. Don't forget how hard the Bigme Galy flopped!
@@KitBetts-Masters Interesting perspective. Relating to the Bigme Galy I think a great drawback was the very slow CPU in it. Apps just were very slow, even if you ignore the Gallery 3 screen disadvantage. So a really fast CPU and an intelligent e-ink monitor management should give you much more room to maneuver.
Boox seems to have a confused lineup if the main difference between Air ans Ulta Pro is the ability to use keyboard. I really want Ultra Pro but without color and with quality speakers and wifi modem - this plus notorious warranty handling prevents me from switching from iPad Pro.
Thank you Kit! May I ask please, can you write directly on books (epub as well as pdf), and when using split screen can you copy and paste text into the notebook as well as drag and drop images from the e-book into the notebook? Thank you so much!
Thank you for the video, I'm an owner of the Note Air3 C, and I'm asking you if you can confirm that we will get the new Firmware 4.0 on the Note Air3 C ?. Thanks again for your great reviews !
I am wondering with NA4C specs now being closer to the specs of the Tab Ultra C Pro, if it's still better to go for the Tab as a daily productivity driver (of course outside of having a keyboard case) when considering the price of both the devices and their power 🤔
I bought my 3c last month, but I see no reason to give it back. I use it every day and the updates in 4c seem to be limited. It's not even available in Germany yet. An update of the system would be nice, but so far I don't miss anything.
Hi and thanks for all your videos. I have a RM2 and I’d like to buy a more versatile tablet. Do you think this one is a good choice knowing that I love the writing experience with my RM? Thanks a lot
So I just got my 4 C and yes there isn't a great difference in whiteness over the 3 C. Faster CPU is very nice. And I much prefer the Tablet UI. For me the big thing is a newer Android version. I'm not sure in practically means much, just some peace of mind.
No, I tend to give them away eventually to family and friends. I don't like to make money off review copies as it feels like paying for reviews. I probably should sell them, but it's another thing to organise! Cheers!
I just received my Note Air 3C. I tried to return for 4C and the customer service didn’t respond until I actually opened the boxes. Now I am torn whether I should take the hit of 15% restocking fee + shipping costs for 4C. Any suggestions?
You should, just for the appreciation and plus bigger ram and brighter screen. Airr3 c price will significantly drop soon. When the air5 c comes up next year then at least 4c will be better priced than to air3 c to sell for an upgrade.
There seems to be a new Boox device coming out every month! These things are very expensive - so who can possibly afford to keep up (Elon Musk, perhaps?)
Yeah, if that's the case I don't think 4C is going to win you over as the screen is very similar and the battery life... well, we'll see on that front.
@@KitBetts-Masters Probably not, however I am interested in the new firmware 4.0. Do you think the firmware will be updated to other devices like Go 10.3?
The 3C didn't come out too long ago. Bringing out a new version with relatively minor improvements - but nevertheless, improvements - so soon seems a bit of an insult to those who rushed to buy the 3C. I wish Boox would wait a while so the next new model was a bigger difference and improvement.
But Apple does the exact same thing. Brings out a new phone every year with barely any changes over the last one. That’s not insulting - that’s just technology. I’m not insulted and I just bought my NA3C two months ago
its basically a free upgrade to those still.looking to purchase, its also clear its a minor refresh which is still better than calling it the same product. probably 3C(additional marker) would have been a better but i think 4C is a simpler name. glad it performs like a tab ultra.
@@leonc4653 But if I'd bought a 3C thinking "great new colour device" only to have it replaced with a faster processor and more RAM a couple of months later, I would be very annoyed personally. Still running my Note Air 2+ anyway, and it does all I need right now. Colour e-ink isn't good enough for me yet - and the 4C doesn't advance things any (to me)
Good chat here. I think annual refreshes are a pretty normal thing really. Boox really peeed people off with the like three versions of Tab Ultra in one year last year, so hopefully they've learned from that, but an new update each year for each line makes sense, even if it's just a little spec bump. As you say, your 2+ is still more than enough eink tablet, glad it's going strong. That thing is brilliant!
Might have to stick to LCDs for now, then. Just got the Clara C and was kinda disappointed by the grayness even compared to my ~10 year old Aura. And with short battery life, it just doesn't have many advantages.
If you keep the front light off, there is no extra battery drain. If you put it at a reasonable 50%, the battery drain is only 1% per hour. That's not excessive either. If you keep the front light at 50% max, you will get MORE battery life out of the Air C then out of the reMarkable2 !!!
@@orangeswell1469 Me too, even a brick would suffice, I don't like batter anxiety and then when you've burning through cycle counts... its not going to hold its charge sooner than later if you are a heavy user... and I don't like the idea of cracking open the device to replace the battery.
So they maybe made the frontlight 2% brighter 😂 wow thanks guys you know how to spoil us… hopefully they will do a black and white version like with the 3C. I would definitely get that, as I can live without colour until it’s properly implemented.
Could you use your contacts at Boox to find out if there is a snowball's chance in hell that the Air3C will get an Android OS update? Version 12 is the oldest that my company MDM accepts, and if it switches to a newer one then thr Air3C becomes a paper weight.
I’m surrpised there isn’t a mode that disconnects or at least powers down the BSR for if you’re just using for notes etc and don’t need fast and heavy refresh - to extend the battery life at least a bit
@@MrKlawUK KitBetts is very much overstating the battery life drainage. It is not bad at all. Also, BSR is NOT a problem. Only the front light at full will drain the battery quickly. If you keep it at 50%, the battery life is only 1% per hour from the frontlight. That's very reasonable. Battery drain is NOT related to BSR or anything else, but to how much you actually write on it. Writing on the Air C costs LESS battery then it does on the reMarkable2 !! If you keep the frontlight below 50%, you get more note taking time our of the Air C, then out of reMarkable2 ! Check out these videos where Jeffrey Moss has done an excellent job figuring out what kind of action drains the battery, and what doesn't: ruclips.net/video/5CUqOT0QYtM/видео.html ruclips.net/video/5k4u5S-KCEQ/видео.html (in the second video you get an table with comparison to many other devices. VERY enlightening! ) Yes, front light at maximum drains battery badly (6%/hr). But at a very reasonable 50% intensity, it is only 1%/hr. And the actual heavy continuous note taking is 12%/hr. Which might seem a lot, but is actually totally average. Remarkable2 is 15%/hr for continuous note taking. Has anyone claimed about a short batterylife there? Go 10.3 and Supernote A5X get 8 and 8.8%/hr resp. Ofcourse, in practice, you don't write continously... there's idle times... Assuming 25% notetaking during the time the tablet is on, the Air C gets 25 hr of battery life with continous 50% frontlight, whereas reMarkable2 is at 27 hrs. So pretty much equal !! Again... did anyone complain about the horrible battery life of the reMarkable2??? Yes, you can get up to 50 and 45 hrs with Go 10.3 and Supernote. Turn off the frontlight on AirC and you get 35 hours... So sure, Air C battery life is not the best... but it isn't dramatic either. It is perfectly acceptable compared to other devices.
I think it might be a similar improvement to that which we'll see in the Kindle Colorsoft. A better front lighting system, or the way the screen reflects that light. But they certainly knew what people wanted to hear on that front!

Yeah, seems to be one of the few differences. I wonder if they'll do another black and white Ultra now the Carta 1300s are available.
Whats the kind of most productive work you get done on these devices ? I mean not just anyone but you in particular ?
Thank you Kit! May I ask please, can you write directly on books (epub as well as pdf), and when using split screen can you copy and paste text into the notebook as well as drag and drop images from the e-book into the notebook? Thank you so much!
I can still return 3 c and get a new one, but there basically nothing to make me undergo the the procedure. Sad.
😢 same. And I am mad at boox customer service in USA
Damn, I should have purchased the Air3 C and saved some cash.
was hoping for color comparison
A software update that would really excite me would be a reworking of the fountain pen. It's pretty much a joke on Boox
Yeah, I'd love that too. The pen tools or rM for example are just streets ahead!
@@KitBetts-Masters Streets ahead! Nice reference!
And the pencil.
Thank you for the video, I'm an owner of the Note Air3 C, and I'm asking you if you can confirm that we will get the new Firmware 4.0 on the Note Air3 C ?. Thanks again for your great reviews !
boox I think confirmed this on reddit - but no timetable yet
I am wondering with NA4C specs now being closer to the specs of the Tab Ultra C Pro, if it's still better to go for the Tab as a daily productivity driver (of course outside of having a keyboard case) when considering the price of both the devices and their power 🤔
Yeah, I think this now is the more sensible choice. Unless you'll be doing lots with the keyboard!
Hi Kit, do you recommend a screen protector for the Air4C?
You are the man !! from france
Merci!
Does the use of Hyperlinked PDF as Custom Template for Notes work for you? If yes, does the hyperlinking is working , in the "Notes" app that way?
I bought the note air 3 c three weeks ago without knowing the 4 c will be coming out... Was this a mistake?
I have the 3c and can’t say i see a significant difference between the 3c and 4c. If you do feel compelled, you could just return the 3c
Yeah, absolutely, you are still in the return period I think. NA3C is still brilliant though!
Bought off the ebay boox direct store, as it was sold out on their website. Will try to get a refund.
I bought my 3c last month, but I see no reason to give it back. I use it every day and the updates in 4c seem to be limited. It's not even available in Germany yet. An update of the system would be nice, but so far I don't miss anything.
@Kitbetts-Masters Can you please tell what the max size Micro SD Card supports on Boox Note Air4 C?
Up to 2TB... Should be enough for a few books! Hehehe.
Is there a way to turn off the color mode when not using? And would that help with having a longer lasting battery cycle?
No, it's baked in I'm afraid.
Can you turn off bsr on these devices, battery life? This better screen or go color 7
Hi and thanks for all your videos. I have a RM2 and I’d like to buy a more versatile tablet. Do you think this one is a good choice knowing that I love the writing experience with my RM?
Thanks a lot
For sure. The reMarkable 2 is an excellent paper feeling and this is just very good. But it's still very good!
Merci beaucoup for your answer
So I just got my 4 C and yes there isn't a great difference in whiteness over the 3 C. Faster CPU is very nice. And I much prefer the Tablet UI. For me the big thing is a newer Android version. I'm not sure in practically means much, just some peace of mind.
Do you sell off your own review copies somewhere? Do you have an ebay page or something?
You should not bother returning and take the hit IMHO.
There seems to be a new Boox device coming out every month! These things are very expensive - so who can possibly afford to keep up (Elon Musk, perhaps?)
Is the table of contents feature similar to the one on Supernote?
Yes I would be interested to know how to create a functional table of contents. It's something I do miss from my SN A5X.
Now I want a Note Air4 with NO colour at all.
I expect it'll come along at some point, note air 3 wasn't far behind the 3C.
It looks like the Note Air 4C is better than Note Air 3C. I've tried NA 3C and didn't like the quality of the screen and also the battery life.
@@MyLifeInTheDesert well I don't buy Apple stuff much or upgrade my devices every year; can't see the point.
Yeah, fingers crossed colour e-ink takes a big leap forward at some point!
Colour at the cost of battery life and battery longevity, is still a hard pill to swallow.
If you keep the front light off, there is no extra battery drain. If you put it at a reasonable 50%, the battery drain is only 1% per hour. That's not excessive either. If you keep the front light at 50% max, you will get MORE battery life out of the Air C then out of the reMarkable2 !!!
Yeah, I agree, I'll live with it and see.
You mean the BSR?
I'm bugging them on the official channel with comments to let us turn it off. You can join.
I would accept a much thicker device if they could extend battery life.
@@orangeswell1469 Me too, even a brick would suffice, I don't like batter anxiety and then when you've burning through cycle counts... its not going to hold its charge sooner than later if you are a heavy user... and I don't like the idea of cracking open the device to replace the battery.
This or go color 7 kit
Very different devices! If you need note taking, then this, if you want a small reader then that!
So they maybe made the frontlight 2% brighter 😂 wow thanks guys you know how to spoil us… hopefully they will do a black and white version like with the 3C. I would definitely get that, as I can live without colour until it’s properly implemented.
Yes, a carta 1300 would be welcome here.
Could you use your contacts at Boox to find out if there is a snowball's chance in hell that the Air3C will get an Android OS update? Version 12 is the oldest that my company MDM accepts, and if it switches to a newer one then thr Air3C becomes a paper weight.
Can somebody recommend a cober wirh a keyboard for 4c?
Why should someone buy this? Nothing can beat note taking on IPads.
I think it's one of those things, if you know you prefer e-ink screens, then it's the other way around, iPads can't beat note taking on eink!
3:32 I’m sorry…. Hours?
Did you just say HOURS???
Yeah, I mean like 10 ish, but not weeks like you'll hear people presume.
@@KitBetts-Masters I am honestly shocked.
I’m surrpised there isn’t a mode that disconnects or at least powers down the BSR for if you’re just using for notes etc and don’t need fast and heavy refresh - to extend the battery life at least a bit
That's it, one of the main eink advantages beside low eyestrain is gone..
Check out these videos where Jeffrey Moss has done an excellent job figuring out what kind of action drains the battery, and what doesn't:
ruclips.net/video/5CUqOT0QYtM/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/5k4u5S-KCEQ/видео.html
(in the second video you get an table with comparison to many other devices. VERY enlightening! )
Yes, front light at maximum drains battery badly (6%/hr).
Pff, so this whiter background was only marketing
I guess they meant less artifacts and ghosts, not the color
I think it might be a similar improvement to that which we'll see in the Kindle Colorsoft. A better front lighting system, or the way the screen reflects that light. But they certainly knew what people wanted to hear on that front!
nice
Is there a way to turn off the super refresh thing on these devices? Would that give better battery life?
No, it's something we've been asking, but it appears it's in or out with no way to make a software switch for it!
