I disagree about other court stopping the middle of my point play, just because they want the ball back immediately, instead of waiting for my point to be over, especially if the ball was in the corner and didnβt bother any of us playing the point.
I agree. If your ball goes onto my court, you have to wait until my point is over.
Yep 100%
I had neighboring court call ball on over and over when I was playing and ball was not in a spot to stop play. I ignored her and finished the point off, one shot later. She was mad because I was going to win against her teammate and she hoped it would stop the point. Ppl need to learn you don't control neighboh's court
Hi Harry, interesting video. I found my old copy of the "Friend at Court" 1989, 1, Jan. inside there is a section titled "The Code". It includes procedures and unwritten rules that players should follow and per USTA, players must follow in sanctioned events. One thing I noticed, my old version has no references to cellphones or smart watches but the 2024 version interestingly does.
Basically what Harry meant to say are the rules of the game in unaffiliated matches. Thatβs what The Code addresses.
No offence but how is that interesting? Of course there would be no mention of cellphones or smartwatches in 1989 lol
Thanks! These rules need to be written down! Do no go for winners in the warm-up (except when hitting overheads)! Do not walk across a court when people are playing. Memorize the brand and the number on your tennis balls so you know which are yours and which do not belong to you. Do not cheat! People like to hit the ball hard but if your shots are consistently hitting the back fence on a fly then reign it in.
Courtesy is the backbone of our civilised sport. As coach Rob said it's not something that is taught. It is something that should get picked up along the way. It's not that difficult, either. Let's keep our sport civilised, it's a gentlemen's game.
Thanks guys.
Good discussion
USTA is big here in SE Michigan. (Why?)Swing vision would be an awesome addition!
If I don't see space between the ball and the line, I call it in. Most people don't do this, I think.
That's what I do. I thought most did (or "tried") to do this?
@@tomr6955Yeah, you're right. The bad etiquette is more the outlier.
Harry, Iβm with you on the raised hand gesture after winning a point on a let cord shot. I think it is very odd. We all know that no one in the world can hit a shot accurately enough target the net cord at just the right point so the ball hits it and then barely makes it over such that it is impossible for their opponent can return it. Weβve all hit the net cord and had the ball not quite make it over and we lose the point, and vice versa. Thatβs part of the game. I donβt see why I should apologize in any way to my opponent when the ball goes over. I hit the shot, it was a legal shot and I won the point. End of story. There will be just as many times when I hit the net cord and the ball doesnβt quite go over and land in and I lose the point.
@7:20 those who dump the balls on the court right in front of your feet when switching sides, when they could have handed them politely, oh well...I like 99% out is 100% in...I'm adding that one to "on the line, that's fine" and "if in doubt, it's not out". And @22:03 I remember practicing with the ball machine (at an interval approximating game play) and a lady walked through the middle, parallel next to the net while I was practicing. A ball flew out of the machine, hit the side of her head, knocking off her glasses.
I want to know about line calls
A while ago a friend started bringing his speaker to the court.
80s rock music in my ear irritates me greatly, especially when I'm at the net in doubles.
Is there any rule about this? It doesn't seem to bother the other playmates but it's killing me.
Can someone help me please?
Hi Harry!
I had an opponent after the point that I won say that we had to play it over because his Apple Watch buzzed and distracted him. I said I donβt think so.
What a chancer!
Welcome to Tennis Spin, where we put our playback speed on 2x
Yeah, we play doubles a lot especially mixed doubles on an inside court at a club and we usually have a 1 1/2 to 2 hour time limit. Between change over some of them take way too long of a break, talking about their day or last nights game or Work. I'm like c'mon we're on a time limit. Too much talking during breaks. Played mixed last week and the women who were friends talked for at least 10 minutes. Talk before or after. Also have these couples that strategize between every point slowing down the game also. C'mon! Lets play!
We had a player bring a dog on the court recently. The dog laid down and ignored the tennis balls, even when they almost hit him. One landed in his water bowl, other than that it was a non event. Amazingly calm dog. Not a problem. Probably a rare case.
I see some dude's dog so hungry he ate other dogs #2 on the court, he basically cleans the court and actually s on the court.

(I let my dog pick other dog #2, pretend I didn't see it and see him eat it and then he #2 on the court and I don't clean it). - Some dude's dog.
I generally do not fart on a tennis court
I like to fart during the court change over.
Are you blind!? π
