    A guy starts a new tool without reading any documentation. That's the smartest thing that I've saw till now.

    I used Defold for a project and also learnt Lua for it, which I found pleasant to use in the end. Overall, however, Defold is unfortunately a bit too complex (for me) compared to other engines, e.g. GameMaker. There are disadvantages and limitations there too, but overall I was able to achieve good results more quickly. A definite plus point of Defold, also compared to Godot, for example, is the very small file size for all exports, especially for HTML.

      Agreed -- I used it to make a really simple Android game and the resulting APK was quite small at about 6.5 MB (including a bunch of .ogg audio files since the game was based around music). At first I was going to try Godot which is a great engine, but the mobile builds for a "hello world" kind of project were over 30 MB.

    as a defold user i say that its a really good game engine the main problem is that there is not too much tutorials on RUclips
    so bigginers can have some problems but if u use defold correctly u will be impressed of all its potential and this engine is getting better and having more users with the time and lua is very used in companies and its 3d isent the best of the market and its the same campared to godot and it has the best 2d of the market so i realy dont regret using this engine and u should make it ur main game engine . ( overall this engine is realy good)

      Actually, their tutorials are very good. After you learn the basics, the rest is up to your coding skills. By the way, try asking chatgpt when you get stuck, he really produces very good solutions in some cases.

    We tried it for our new project. It was a bad idea. Limited object communication, no type checking, and other checks. No animator, everything has to be done manually. In Lua, you have to write your own wrapper layers and much more. Many errors that have not been fixed for several years. The engine is not evolving in terms of functionality. In general, it's okay for small and simple projects.

      Which engine did you choose in the end? What can you recommend?

      @@firewatch123 "Defold is similar to Godot, but not as mature. It lacks the features and capabilities that Godot has out of the box. For dynamics, physics, animation, and much more, you'll have to write a lot of code. It uses Lua, which is a limited language. The editor is also limited, written in Java, and has issues with memory and other restrictions."

      @@firewatch123 "What game engine to use? Much depends on how organized you are and what resources you have (finances, time, experience). You should first evaluate your product (game), what audience, what main platform. Choose the most favorable and stable tools for implementing your idea. The tools should meet your requirements not only technically but also in financial policy."

    • @dastan331
      @dastan331 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@firewatch123 "Until 2018, we actively used Unity in all our projects. Afterward, we reconsidered our views and started using Godot for our projects. Today, Godot is our priority for projects. The engine is mature enough, doesn't impose anything, continues to evolve, and there are no indications that anything will change in the usage policy anytime soon."

      @@dastan331 Godot has serious version incompatibility. They could rewrite something at any moment. There were performance losses with Godot 4. There is around 1% ANR on mobile. You can't encrypt your game for mobile, your codes are exposed.
      The engine has no definite purpose. Yes, it has a lot of features and compared to Defold. But it is incapable of performing basic functions. It's getting worse day by day. I had high hopes for Godot. If you are developing for a game jam, Godot is a good choice. In Godot, when you just open the project, you can get work done very quickly. But as time goes on, the development process becomes much more difficult. If Godot overcomes critical issues, I would give it another chance. It has potential if managed well.
