It depends. If one have ducks in his garden then higher raised beds would prevent ducks from eating tender greens I think. Also you can make a higher raised beds in hugelkultur style.

Super video! Sam imam "nizke" visoke grede saj bodo na koncu 40 cm visoke. Začetno maso zemlje sem nareil po staroirskem načinu na to zemljo pa bom nasul kompost :) PS Super animacija sta jo sama naredila? Veselo vrtnarita še naprej! The starting layer of soil was made by an old Irish method and the top layer will be some fresh compost. Happy gardening!

It's used for insulation and protection for wood (more or less).
