- In this episode of Mondays at Mirai, Ryan Neil and the intern Nico Alvaro become our on-site videographers and winter garden maintenance crew at Mirai as a massive snow storm has hit the Portland area. With 10 inches of fresh snow already on the ground, overnight freezing rains have caused immense weight and ice crystallization all over the garden.
Ryan goes about the garden checking on the greenhouses to ensure their structure held up and retained heat despite the massive pressure of snow weighing down on the roofs. Taft, with a black panther action figure in hand, enjoys this rare heavy snowfall in the Pacific Northwest. Two foot long icicles hang off the eaves of the greenhouse, while trees within are packed densely to keep warm from this arctic front hitting us in late winter. Thick accumulations of ice coat every branch, landscape trees and bonsai alike. The gentle appearance of white snow dusting the surface is crushed by trees and snow falling all around. In a snow-capped bunk house, Cosmo the cat makes his first debut. Laboriously shoveling snow off the roof, Ryan is focused on garden preservation when a storm beyond human control takes hold.
