When I saw MG on tour, during the monologues in Apex Predator the spotlight didn’t hit Sophie Kawachi so the actress was in the dark saying “When Regina George is around, I feel like no one can even see me” and it totally fit the character 🤣
Your videos are always fantastic!! Perhaps do a video on mid-show cast switches? I remember the first time I went, Kate was replaced by Devon as Karen for Act 2 due to her leg injury - since it's happened a few times I'm sure many are curious about what the experience is like within the cast!
I was at a very early preview of Mean Girls in DC where the bus didn't come on stage, the curtain came down and the announcement went. A couple minutes later TINA FEY walks on stage to tell us that no one was hurt and the show was about to continue! They picked back up at "And that's how Regina George died.", the audience roarrrrred. #1 mishap I've seen for sure.
When we went to see the Mean Girls tour, the bed got stuck between set pieces as it was trying to back out after What's Wrong With Me with Megan (tour Gretchen) still sitting on it. Mary Kate, Danie, and Eric tried to come back on stage and work around it, but it only took a couple lines for them to kinda break and start laughing. Megan was scurrying around trying to inconscpicuously get offstage. There was a good ten seconds between the scene change and when the curtain fell, and it stayed down for like fifteen minutes before they raised the curtain again and started over.
I had two bad mishaps when I played Belle in my final year drama school production of Beauty and the Beast On opening night the sound tech guy accidentally pressed the next cue which was Gaston's gunshot in the middle of me singing, so it went "Little town, it's a quiet village *BANG*" which threw me off a little! And in my second and final show, my mic was broken before I'd even started, so I had to do all of Belle with no mic, leave the stage halfway through the song to get another mic shoved on me, which then didn't turn on until No Matter What 🙃 was not ideal
Once I was in Oliver and another girls suspenders literally burst and the little bits of metal flew into the audience. We were onstage for a good thirty minutes for a sequence that was way to long she was just holding it 💀
The line for @15:20 is “Gretchen, I’m sorry for laughing at you the time you got diarrhea on the Ferris wheel. And I’m sorry for repeating it now. And I’m sorry got the people who were below us.”
You're back!! And with such an amazingly fun topic as well! I know we ALL love to share our onstage mishap stories😂 Also, you may not remember me, but I had so much fun doing the meet-n-greet with you back in September! You were really fun to talk to about all the shows we love😁
I played Sarah from Guys and Dolls recently and I definitely had some massive mess ups. I forgot the lyrics during If I Were a Bell because I was out of breath after Havana and let me tell you, I have never seen someone look as terrified as the guy playing Sky did while I continued to do the choreography without singing. I also skipped a verse in Marry the Man Today and the girl playing Adelaide had to get me back on track… yeah those are things I prefer not to think about
I totally understand the panic of things going wrong onstage. When I was in high school, we put on a rendition of Seussical the Musical, and I played a side role. My costume consisted of a yellow skirt, white and yellow striped tights, a yellow shirt, a doctor's lab coat, a yellow headband with a big cardboard circle in the he center, and a fake stethoscope. The weight of the cardboard would make the headband flop around, and the headband would push my hair up into almost a mushroom cap. At one point during the ending song we had to run in a circle around the main characters as they took their bows, and my headband flew off ofy head as I exited stage. One of the actors standing center stage had to duck my airborne headband. It was... An experience, for sure.
Lovely to see you back Krystina.. Hope you are doing well xx PS I'd like to see you carry on with your deep dive show by show lookback series... LOVED that
Great video! I STILL want to hear more Mean Girls, duh, but specificallyyyyy any moments when you first went into the show where you went up on lines or didn't know where you were supposed to be. Not trying to make you sound like you shouldn't be hired as a replacement haha! But it just seems SO HARD to me to go into a show that has been running for so long. When I did acting (not on Broadway, small regional theaters) I was an understudy a few times, and EVERY SINGLE TIME I ended up going on with no rehearsal. Yes, I still have nightmares. In "Uncommon Women and Others" I was the understudy and I took over the role, but I had one rehearsal. One. The other actors were just pushing me where I needed to be. And it was an emotional role! Anyway, more of that, or more stories of your first week I guess, even if there were no mishaps!
I saw the tour on 4/2723 and during “Where Do You Belong” Janis’s mic didn’t turn on for some of her lines. But what was cool about it is that you could still hear her!
The last show I did before COVID was Amadeus, playing Venticelli #1 (essentially the greek chorus of the show). There were 4 of us playing Venticelli in this production, but I had the very first line in the entire show. I was supposed to go onstage after the introductory sound cues, say my line ("I don't believe it!") and then the rest of the Venticelli actors were supposed to come onstage to continue with their lines. So, the night we were filming the show, the introduction finishes, I enter, cross to center, and say my line... Crickets. No one came out. So I'm there alone onstage. It's not the middle of a scene or anything and the lines for the show are written in a way where there's nowhere to really go or improv to effectively cover it up. So for what felt like 5-10 seconds I'm staring at the audience and the audience is staring at me in total silence. Finally, I repeat the line because at this point I have no idea what else to do since it's literally the very beginning of the show and the lines are repeated anyway to start, and the next person finally comes onstage. (It turns out there was an issue with a set piece blocking the other wing and they couldn't get through to the stage) I don't think anyone else could tell, but if I watch the video I can see the horror dawning behind my eyes. It was probably more like 3 or 4 seconds in real life, but it felt SO LONG at the time. (I would have done the entire intro by myself if I had to though, it would've just been really weird)
OH MY GOSH. Unrelated to the video, but I didn’t know you had a youtube channel! Definitely gonna binge watch. (I just did the Mad Ones for class and did a section on my research paper about you. You have such a powerful voice!)
This reminded me of how the last musical I did during the closing show someone’s shoes came off during her number in act two so she threw them into the wings for the remainder of the act. And how with the most recent play I did we had a tech malfunction during our invited dress so we had to start the show over(thank goodness it was the beginning)
I was Milky White in my school's production of Into the Woods and we had the cow as a prop (2 props actually, I carried the head and someone else carried the body). It was made so the potion items could be transported from the head into the body, which worked well in theory. In practice, various things looked like they were hanging out of the cow's midsection, and we couldn't get it consistently right so depending on the day it would sometimes look really weird.
New here! Just subscribed 💖 only got fully into musical theatre last year! So I love videos like these. Firstly you only sang snippets here and there in the video and I'm already in love with your voice! 😍 also wow the mean girls cast sounds incredible! I would have worried they'd be mad at me for screwing up even if not my fault so it's so lovely to hear everyone was so understanding and helpful!
I had a skirt mishap when I played Martha Brewster in my senior year production of Arsenic & Old Lace! I had to be safety pinned into the skirt from the get-go as we rented the costume and the pin snapped while on stage and I was like "well this is going to be interesting" and had to sneak my hands behind me and try to fix it...I think I ended up just holding it..but it happened in the one spot of the show where I just couldn't remember my line no matter how hard I tried, it was a double whammy...so it was definitely a high schooler freaking in my head but poised murderous old lady on the outside. I'm just thankful it was near the end of the show! :D
I was in a theatre studio for six years when I was a kid and when I was 8-9 yo we did a play called "cats" (BUT it had NOTHING to do with broadway cats, only matching thing here is the name, we had different plot, different characters, different everything, it's just a different play written by one of our teachers). So we had 3 groups, each containing 6-7 members. But there was one show when...i don't know the reason, but we had much less people than we're supposed to. My group had only me and one more girl, others also had like 2-3 people. And we didn't even have our vocal and dance coaches with us, as we usually did. And I remember us riding on a bus to a place we were supposed to perform at, and we, kids, were changing the choreo, distributing the lines, just trying to work with what we had. I didn't even feel panicking or whatever, it was just like "ok we have to do that". And I don't even remember how it went in the end, but I can't remember any fails either, so, I guess, everything was fine! Even though I didn't feel anything special in the moment, now, when I look at this 10 years later I think "damn, we were really cool this day"😅
Lol i've seen that Erika mishap on RUclips a while ago. Very funny! I could see the cast struggling not to just completely die laughing. Speaking of Mean Girls mishaps I hear that Laura Leigh flubbed a line in Meet The Plastics on her debut! Is that true?
A couple of years ago I was in a production of Midsummer Nights Dream, it was closing night and for the rest of the run NOTHING had gone wrong for me. So naturally, as the lovers are running off stage (I was playing Hermia), my shoe decided to come off because they were a little bit too big for me. I was stressing back stage because we had to go on again very soon and they had to find me a replacement shoe, except they didn’t have many spares so I was literally wearing two left footed shoes lmao.
When I was in Frozen jr a few years back I had this one big quick change right directly after let it go where I had to get in a giant red dress and after a few shows I accidentally put it on inside out and backwards and I had to go on stage like that for a while. Also as ensemble for in summer we had hardly any space to dance and we had sunglasses on that u could barely see out of. I ran into the wall and twisted my ankle then I did like a 360 turn into another cast mate. Ahhh ..yes theater..
In the Dutch sound of music (where I did my internship) all the walls came falling down. The ones that are stored above stage and come down for the house/church scenes since they rotate. That was immediate shut down
Regarding favorite onstage mishaps: I was in a production of 'Charlotte's Web: The Musical,' and I had a mic pack malfunction. It was the middle of the act one finale (for those who don't know the show, it's a big ensemble song, and everyone is onstage, and there's lots of different things going on), and as we were doing some of the dialogue, my mic pack came loose, so I went to fix it...and the clip came off. I panicked for a second, because I thought the clip had fallen (thank god it hadn't), and then I did the rest of the song with one hand behind my back, holding my mic pack in place so it wouldn't fall and pull my mic wire. I always made a point of double-checking how secure my mic pack was after that.
i love your videos so much, they’re always so fun but also really informative at the same time! i love hearing about all of your stories they’re so cool!!
i think the line is something like: “im sorry i laughed at you that time you got diarrhea on the ferris wheel. and im sorry for repeating it now. and i’m sorry for the people below us”
I was at a Lion King show once. It was basically the last number where Scar falls of the cliff. So basically the big cliff emerged from the side of the stage and we see Scar and Simba on top. They are staring at each other as if they hate each other so much, (because their characters do) and Simba says his line. Then scar says his line. After that Simba is supposed to say something. But he didn’t. They just stood their starring at each other. Then 15 seconds later the curtain comes down and we hear the “Ladies and Gentleman we are experiencing technical difficulties” blah blah blah. About 10 minutes later the curtain comes back up. The audience goes wild. But on the stage we don’t see a cliff. We see nothing. Then Scar runs on stage and turns around. Right as he turns around the 3 main hyenas (Shanzi, Banzai and Ed) run on stage. Scar says something like “I’m your ruler back down!” And their like “No we’ve had enough of you!” Then the hyenas ATTACK scar and eat him. So yeah instead of Simba gaining power and pushing Scar off the cliff, the hyenas just, eat him! The rest of the show went normally! So yeah that’s one of many Broadway malfunction stories I have experienced!
I was glad to see you post again! This one was a lot of fun! I’d absolutely love to hear more about preview shenanigans like you mentioned towards the end
Don't know if I could call it a misshap. But a few years ago I saw "we will rock you" in London and durring killer Queen the show stopped and we were told to evacuate the building because there apparently was an emergency ( a minor fire think) backstage. Killer queen said to the audience "I'll be back", so we stood outside for about 20 minutes before we were allowed back and the killer Queen without missing a beat said "told you I'll be back"🤣.

I'm in rehearsals for a production of The Lion King right now, and (as Adult Simba) I have a gorgeous headpiece, but it is very fragile. It's very hard to do some of the movement/fight choreography and still have it look natural and lion-like. I've been rehearsing with the head for a few weeks, and we open in a month. So I'm just gonna keep on rehearsing with it and keep my fingers crossed!
Krystina, I am begging you, please do a video (or at least a segment of a video) about your time on the Evita tour. It is my favorite musical of all time and I saw you in Cincinnati!
I’m seeing the Mean Girls tour in the 16th! I really wanted to see it on Broadway but it closed. I hope it comes back like Beetlejuice. Edit: now the show has been rescheduled for august. Life sucks
Karens Confessional Gretchen I'm sorry I laughed at you when you had diheria in Barnes and Noble **PAUSE** And I'm sorry I told everyone **PAUSE** And I'm also sorry I'm telling everyone again...
That one video of Erika forgetting her line is how I got introduced to Mean Girls musical, but I haven't been able to find it again, did it get taken down?
When I saw MG on tour, during the monologues in Apex Predator the spotlight didn’t hit Sophie Kawachi so the actress was in the dark saying “When Regina George is around, I feel like no one can even see me” and it totally fit the character 🤣
