    I’d like to add, there are disabilities that don’t have next to anything to do with a person’s actual body. Mainly Autism, ADHD, Schizophrenia, etc. These, much like visible, invisible, and/or chronic disorders, are very real and can have major effects on people’s day-to-day lives, and are also often misrepresented into stereotypes. Like with other forms of disability, if you are someone who doesn’t have experience with the mental disability you want to give your character, doing research or even (consentually) asking someone who has the disorder about it, is always a good idea! I say this as a person who is neurodivergent and has Autism, ADHD, and anxiety. I don’t mean this as a critique of Beo’s video, this is just a thought that I had to add to the discussion! Ciao! ❤

      definitely! I'm an autistic person myself and my main OC has autism as well, I really like it when people represent autism positively.

    Sometime ago i created an OC who has a prosthetic leg, so this video has a lot of good advice!
    When i put a particular detail on a character i make sure to not make that detail their whole personality
    Making a little detail a character's whole personality is annoying, it makes them one dimensional and stereotypical

    3:26 Thank you for bringing this up! I had a few OCs+headcanons of characters who would use a wheelchair due chronic fatigue, chronic pain and lacked a leg, but I was absolutely annoyed with the wheelchairs in Gacha Club because I would need to realign the wheelchair and character every time I needed them to move and I hated how the arm rest was behind the character due to how flat it felt. When GL2 came out, I wanted them to have the wheelchair be special effects in the extra section so I would be able to animate characters who use wheelchairs, but I was sorely disappointed by the fact that the only chair in the entire game was a swivel gaming chair, and that other people had to make the wheelchair out of an oc when it should of already been in the game.

    also for the “stereotypes to avoid” i’d like to add don’t use things like deformities and scars as a shorthand for a character being evil or a bad guy

      Yeah! Villains/antagonists can have them, but that should NEVER be the reason for them being a villain/antagonist.

    As person who is disabled myself (Cystic Fibrosis), seeing well-researched representation of either my illness or other respiratory-related illnesses is such an amazing thing, since it's so rare in most modern media like video games, shows, movies, and even written content. I love seeing these sorts of things being brought to Chibimation, because while even though I personally don't need mobility aids, I know that people who do are probably going to be really happy knowing they're included by such an amazing development team.

    I actually have a set of disabled OCs, my main one having autism, asthma, and a chronic fainting disorder and the other being a group of mainly female racers who are all disabld in some way. One of them, for example, is diabetic but doesn't let that stop her from racing. Seraphina mitigates her disability with an insulin pump and she has a service dog who knows how and when to turn it on and off.

    I actually have two dnd characters that both have disabilities. One of them is mute and communicates through sign languages and also a magic stone that she can use to telepathically communicate (but it really drains her). The other one is a harpy who can’t fly so she has to hop to get around, so she developed arthritis in her legs so she actually has a sledge to get around that is pulled by three dogs. The dogs are also big enough that she can ride one (she is relatively light because partially hollow bones) if she absolutely has to.

      hey there, fun fact! I recently found out from a friend that "mute" is a derogatory term and the proper term is nonverbal! I know you more than likely weren't aware, and that's okay.

    • @Ieatbatteries1
      @Ieatbatteries1 3 часа назад

      @@ShiningStarAhsokaTanofanas far as I know, mute is a term for those who physically can’t speak, and nonverbal is for those who have trouble speaking (which doesn’t relate to issues with the vocal chords).
      If you are thinking of people who call nonverbal people “mute”, you are correct. However, if you are talking about mute people, that is incorrect. Is your friend mute (as in having serious damage to the vocal cords, that makes it hard or even unable for them for speak)? If they are mute (not nonverbal), then I may be incorrect.

    I just thought here was the best place to ask this, but is it wrong for me to alter a characters disability to match my story. the character in cannon has a muscular disorder putting them in a wheelchair, but with me making a comic and changing everything including their species{I'm mixing them with WOF, which will make them into dragons}, i was thinking of making it a birth-defect where they're missing a leg as I'm struggling to convey them in a way that doesn't center entire chapters around it or seem out of place.

He's a demon with human and demon form, and in both forms he can't walk, but he can fly in demon form, just not human form. He died like that and can feel real human emotions and nerves in his human form, but never ages.

    Honestly I think I could do great at making characters that have disabilities because of my experience having family with them and I am dyslexic which is a non visible language disability, we also think I have ADHD but my doctor retired before confirming and my great-grandma from old age has almost completely lost her hearing and sight and uses a cane while another great-grandma of mine is paralyzed from the waist down so I think I'd do good making characters with disabilities because I have experience and know people with them

I have 2 disabled characters ( a lesbian couple, or as i like to say, " my little lesbians 🥺" and one has a prosthetic arm, simply because she was born without a arm, and decided to make it where she always had a prosthetic, even when she was a baby. (Of which baby prosthetics do exist, they look a bit like robotic baby doll limbs and they are super cute) and the second one is mute and uses sign language to speak :) actually started learing sign just so i can better portray her. I love these two so much lol

    • @kat-fishh
      @kat-fishh 5 часов назад +2

      Well you don’t have to put them in your artwork, no one *has* to. I wouldn’t say it’d ruin it though. It’s just a person.
      Many people DO want to put *disabled* people in their work. They enjoy developing characters that could either reflect themselves, or just simply be interesting. Sometimes adding disabled people can help bring a refreshing take to the artwork, adding story and depth in the character as well. It’s also nice to just experiment with different people, if you have everyone who is basically the same, that’s not really ideal. Not saying everyone has to be vastly different, but it’s just pleasing to have each character have something of their own.
