- Old City of Jerusalem, the Golden Gate (Gate of Mercy) of the Old City of Jerusalem. Let's visit the Old City of Jerusalem and the Golden Gate (Gate of Mercy) of the Old City. We are staying outside the defensive walls of the Old City of Jerusalem looking at Lions Gate (where Via Dolorosa begins). To our left, we are seeing an ancient Muslim Cemetery, in a mild state of neglect. Let's walk through the cemetery and now we are going to the Golden Gate which is permanently blocked, we are going to see views of the Golden Gate from outside the walls as well from inside Temple Mount, what an adventure!
The Golden Gate (Gate of Mercy), as it is called in Christian literature, is the only eastern gate of the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem and one of only two that used to offer access into the city from that side. It has been walled up since medieval times. The date of the construction of the Golden gate is disputed and no archaeological work is allowed at the gatehouse, but opinions are shared between a late Byzantine and an early Umayyad date. Closed by the Muslims in 810, reopened in 1102 by the Crusaders, it was walled up by Saladin after regaining Jerusalem in 1187. Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent rebuilt it together with the city walls, but walled it up in 1541, and it stayed that way. The Hebrew name of the Golden Gate is Sha'ar HaRachamim (שער הרחמים), Gate of Mercy. Similar to Christians, Muslims generally believe this was the gate through which Jesus as Messiah, entered Jerusalem.

I have been to Jerusalem at least 8 times over the last 30 years (IT IS my favourite place, after all, in the world) but this was the first time the I actually managed to get a view of the Golden Gate, both from outside the Walls and from inside Temple Mount. Just think of this: This is the gate that Jesus passed through on Palm Sunday, giving the gate messianic importance. Jewish literature details that when the Messiah (the promised deliverer of the Jewish nation as prophesied in the Jewish bible) arrives, he will enter Jerusalem through the Eastern (Golden) Gate. Muslims also place religious significance at this location, as some believe that this is the site of Allah’s final judgment and the site of future resurrection.
Sir i have a question. Want to know if the Jewish believe Jesus as the Messiah or promised deliverer who will enter the golden gate like we do.
@@bettydsouza4523 No, the Jews never recognized Jesus as the Messiah and as a result, they do not see his entrance through the Golden Gate as the entrance of the Messiah they have been waiting for..

@@VicStefanu Hi Stefanu. Thanks for the reply. We passed golden gate on foot on our way to Getshmane via mount of olives. We went on a organised tour from our church and temple mount is not included. Saw the dome from mount of olives only. Any place in holy land is memorable as I get to see it here often and relive the memories. Will keep watching your videos. Shalom from India.

Hi, Vic. Nice video. I visited Jerusalem in mid March 2019. Did go to the inside of the Golden Gate area and since the iron gates on the top of the stairs were opened, I went downstairs and perform sholat (Muslim prayer) there....
Hello, thank you for your comments!! Unfortunately, when I was visiting (as you saw on the video), the iron gates of the on top of the stairs were locked and since I am not Muslim, I was not allowed to go down the steps (I asked..).. I may be luckier on my next visit later this year..

As far as the dating of the Islamic Cemetry, it goes back to the days of the second Caliph Umar who emancipated the city in the 7th century. This is proven by the presence of tombs for the early Muslims who accompanied Umar who are buried there.

The graves are multi layered and run very deep one below the other. All the occupants are mostly Ottoman elite. The architecture gives a semblance of the gardens of heaven.
