They never said who the song was about, but it's assumed to be Owsley “Bear” Stanley, who was a legendary for cooking LSD back in the 60s. Stanley was imprisoned at one point but released on a technicality, and put under continuous surveillance by the authorities, hence the lyrics, 'Cause the man is wise.

"Do It Again," "Reelin' in the Years," "My Old School," "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," "Peg," "Deacon Blues," "FM (No Static at All)," ... These songs filled the radio airwaves throughout in the 70's. "Hey Nineteen" capped off the decade in 1980. Each tells a tale of its own. "Kid Charlemagne" spins a tale about the way Owsley finished The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. And what a great guitar solo too.

I recommend ‘Cousin Dupree’ from their album Two Against Nature, it’s one of the most under rated albums of all time IMO, but it did win Grammy’s Album of The Year, I love it. That being said, Dan’s older stuff is very good as well. My Old School, Bodhisttva (Spelling?), Dirty Work, Black Cow etc are a few of the many excellent Dan songs. I’ve seen them three times in concert, they are top notch musicians, Fagen and the late Walter Becker were amazing writers. Complete perfectionists, fired band members all the time for not being perfect, they usually used studio musicians.
Their music usually has a naughty theme and they use jazzy or intellectual terms a lot in their music. The name ‘Steely Dan’ comes from the book Naked Lunch, it’s a dildo, that’s what their name means.
    Just my two cents.

    Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne
    Lyrics:
While the music played you worked by candlelight
    Those San Francisco nights
You were the best in town
Just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl
You turned it on the world
That's when you turned the world around
    Did you feel like Jesus
    Did you realize
That you were a champion in their eyes
On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene
    But yours was kitchen clean
Everyone stopped to stare at your technicolor motor home
Every A-Frame had your number on the wall
You must have had it all
    You'd go to L.A. on a dare
    And you'd go it alone
    Could you live forever
    Could you see the day
Could you feel your whole world fall apart and fade away
    [Chorus:]
Get along, get along Kid Charlemagne
    Get along Kid Charlemagne
Now your patrons have all left you in the red
Your low rent friends are dead
This life can be very strange
All those dayglow freaks who used to paint the face
    They've joined the human race
    Some things will never change
    Son you were mistaken
    You are obsolete
Look at all the white men on the street
    [Chorus]
Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail
Those test tubes and the scale
Just get them all out of here
Is there gas in the car
Yes, there's gas in the car
I think the people down the hall
    Know who you are
    Careful what you carry
    'Cause the man is wise
You are still an outlaw in their eyes
    [Chorus]

Kid Charlemagne is the first track off of Steely Dan's "The Royal Scam". The song is written about Owsley Stanley, a manufacturer of high-quality LSD at the time and a sound technician for The Grateful Dead. The last verse describes an incident in which Owsley and another person were busted after their car ran out of gas.

Steely Dan was a group who never played in public. They were some of, if not the first and only, studio artist of their time. You MAY find a video of them playing together but most people have never seen them. It was ALL about their music and not their physical appearance so their popularity was solely based on their musical talent.

"Kid Charlemagne" in this song was a guy named Owsley, I forgot his first name. Owsley did sound for the Greatful Dead early on and was also a chemist. In San Francisco during the 60's he manufactured the purest LSD made outside a laboratory setting. He produced the majority of the LSD consumed in the Greater Bay area during that time. He was eventually arrested and did time in prison and I was living in San Francisco when he got out. Rolling Stone did a big story on him. He made a new batch. Anyway, he is Kid Charlemagne in this song. We just called him Owsley.

Dear, his lyrics are always subject to speculation but those melodies and harmonies not to mention production are the main attraction. He could’ve been singing about any number of interesting characters but that’s not the main point, it’s the instrumental content that really shines in that unique Steely Dan way that continued for decades!

Hey, I think you did a great job analyzing the clues the song throws at you. This band is one of my fav and I can't begin how much I'd love it for you to react to more of their stuff. Their first couple of albums are straight fire, I'm talking not a single one doesn't have 5 star audio quality, lyrics and new GOAT musicians while being catchy as hell.
One consistent theme of Steely Dan is their making "losers of life" into heroes.
Your hunch about "kid charlemagne" having to do with drugs is spot on. In the 60's, he supplied San Francisco's psychedelic scene with LSD and was a "champion" of the creative artistic hippie scene. He expanded his business into southern Cali & LA and the cops started to break up his drug empire. At that point, even though he was a "champion in their eyes" to all the Cali LSD-hippies, he was still living the life of an "outlaw in their eyes" of society.
I'd love to see you react to some more of their earlier stuff, first couple of albums have NOT A BAD SONG on them.

A master piece from Steely Dan, my favorite band. I believe at that time during the 70's, LSD was ok to have and use. Owlsley Stanley III used to prepare to his friends. He was the sound engineer and many other things in the Greatful Dead Band, and also he was the one who created the logo of the band, and the band used to have printed in the Speakers, this way noone could steal the cabinets and amps, the logo became a trademark for the band.

This song is about Owsley Stanley. He made the best LSD and was the Dead's soundman for several years in the late 60's and in the 70's. Some of these posts are way off however. The "Day Glow Freaks who used to paint the face have joined the human race" are the former hippies who have gotten jobs and stopped tripping (look at the old footage of San Fran in '68...they've all got flowers painted on their faces). "You're obsolete, look at all the white men on the street" 'White Men' are the coke dealers. No one was dropping anymore by the mid 70's, but rather doing blow. Hence, Owsley was obsolete. And the running out of gas thing is apparently a true story....He got caught 'cas his car ran out of gas. Now the idea of Owsley creating something new ie "crossing a diamond with a pearl" I don't really see. I think it just refers to the good LSD he was making. The Acid derivative he created was a big failure and was responsible for nothing but bad trips, so I don't see that experiment being eulogized in song.

  • @gasaholic47
    @gasaholic47 4 года назад

The whole song is a reference to an infamous acid dealer named Owlsley, and his fall from grace. “all the white men on the street” is a reference to cocaine, which became huge in the 70’s.
