We stopped there in (I think) 78 when I was 10, and ate at the restaurant. Went to Ft. Davis and McDonald. My Dad NEVER called and made reservations. We just drove and looked for the Vacancy sign. Stopped somewhere along the way to Carlsbad at The Cactus Motel. Crack in the ceiling where we could see the moon. 😂 Memories. ❤️
I have camped at Fort Davis State Park a couple times now, most recently during Labor Day weekend. FWTXBEVO said it best, "This is the most underrated area of Texas." The US 118 and 166 Loop is majestic, McDonald Observatory, etc. The first time I went out there last year in the first week of March (the week before the state shutdown), I fell in love with the area. I plan on going back at least annually. Great Job TBL!
Also fun fact, Jeff Williams is from the same small town as me! We are both from Bellville, TX. I met him on my last trip and it was amazing to me to find two different generations of guys from the same small town of roughly 4,000 located just south of Brenham. It was another example of just how small this world is!
Hey love your show. You need to make a video about the oldest Barbershop and Shoe Shine in San Antonio Tx. Located in the Sheraton Gunter Hotel downtown. Their history is very interesting and the barbers are real characters.
It's an awful place - don't go y'all regret it. I mean, how many times do you want to drive up the same scenic mountain drive to watch the sunrise and sunset while the spirit winds shift clouds all around, and morning mist hanging all over the slopes? Thunderheads rumble up suddenlike, and rip across the ridges. The kids will be bored out of their mind and whining about having to go hiking where pumas hang out. For Pete's sake, it's the middle of nowhere. Seriously. Hours to get to a Wal Mart so if you forget something, there's only the Dollar store in town. No cell service in the mountains. No internet. No social media. Big lizards hang out on the walls. Cactus flowers attract bees. Pesky barnswallows swooping all over the place to feed their birdnests full of squawking babies. So much racket makes it hard to read a book on the veranda. Especially the old folks playing checkers and laughing theirself silly. How's a person supposed to read with all that racket? The streets of town roll up before bedtime. There's no chain restaurants, just Mom and Pop businesses and Blue Bell ice cream and fat juicy patty melts. Root beer floats. Silly stores like Javelinas & Hollyhocks, Texas Pecans, rattlesnakes in snake museums, home-made chicken salad sandwiches at the Stone Village to take-with on the scenic tour drive, herds of javelinas running next to the road... aoudads and big horns standing all over the place... did I mention no Starbucks... and the fat fluffy pancakes at the Black Bear restaurant are carb city... just don't bother going y'all.
This is the most underrated area of Texas.
Love the Indian Lodge, stayed there many times on my visits out to West Texas.
