Eyo and welcome to my Fleet Histories series where we take a look at the operational history of aircraft fleets both active and retired. Passenger airliners are normally featured, although freighter and government aircraft will be covered occasionally. This series was inspired by the videos of elmauriplatense, Ibirdball, Scaring Crab, and many other aviation RUclipsrs.
Trans Australia Airlines (TAA) and Australian National Airways (ANA) were the first Australian operators of the Boeing 727, and both carriers commenced services with this aircraft in 1964. TAA issued their order for the 727 in 1963 and received their first aircraft on October 16, 1964. The airline continued operating these aircraft even after they were rebranded as Australian Airlines in 1986. The last 727 was at the end of 1992.

The only planes I’ve flown on were Australian Airlines. We went to Adelaide for the Grand Prix from Sydney. We went on an airbus on the way over and stopped at Melbourne. My step dad wanted to go on their new Airbus. Coming home we were on a 727, the noise from it was incredible, sitting right in the back!

Must've been an amazing experience! I would've loved to sit next to the window too if I rode a 727.

@@RetroAvi8or I did, yeah. It was 1988, and I remember coming into Sydney it was storming and raining and we were getting thrown around like crazy.

Australian Airlines was the name given to TAA when Qantas took over the airline.

"TAA the friendly way", I remember the ads on TV as a kid. I had some relatives that lived on the last street before Mascot airport, directly under the flight path, back when planes still used runway 07 - 25. These things were the loudest planes ever. Loud, with a black smoky exhaust, but were also really fast. I believe it is a TAA 727 that still holds the quickest time between Melbourne and Sydney.

FYI, did you know the Sydney to Melbourne route is one of the highest trafficked airline routes in the world?
    Thanks for sharing. 😉👌🏻

yes, the 727 was a truly fabulous a/c. TAA also turned one of these around in 4 minutes - in ROK one evening in order to get it back to BNE in the days of BNE's curfew. Left 2 engines running, pax down the rear stairs ad up the front stairs all at once. THOSE were the days!! can't do that sort of thing now......thanks for your comments..

The best design was for TAA with the large T on the tail. I disliked it when that was all changed.

I believe TAA bought its first 151 PAX 727 - 200 in 1973 and it went into passenger service March of the same year. That's according to the "TAA Museum" website.

Qantas wasn't a domestic airline back then.....TAA and Ansett were. When Qantas decided to get into the domestic scene as well TAA and Ansett were killed off.
