No it doesn't, you can start with the right side. This is true for every stitch, that you can start with either right or left. On the part 2 I did continued this stitch with the right.Once you know how to continue it, you'll be able to start with the two possibilities. The same idea that you know how to do the 2 possibilities (right and left side) of a box stitch.
