Hudson River State Hospital - A Drone Exploration

- Hudson River State Hospital is a former New York state psychiatric hospital which operated from 1873 until its closure in the early 2000s. The buildings and grounds have been abandoned since 2003, and vandalism and multiple fires have caused extensive damage to a number of the buildings.
While it's an interesting place to explore, the grounds are patrolled by police from the City of Poughkeepsie, and some of the buildings are unstable and dangerous to enter. However, exploring the former hospital from the air seemed like an intriguing way to get a sense of both the former grandeur of the institution and the mark that time and humanity have left.
Please enjoy these images, and let me know what think of this video. There are more drone videos to come!
Love the violin! Perfect.
I drove by this today and found this video. Thanks for doing it. It reminded me of the Northampton State Hospital, another eerie, yet beautiful compound, much of which has been demolished. I wish old buildings such as hospitals, mills and factories could be documented like this before they are destroyed, for the sake of history lovers. I understand these places may have lost their usefulness, but they were such a part of people's lives. To tear them down and forget them entirely is to lose a part of our past that can never be recaptured.
It’s so sad to see a beautiful building like that just left to fall apart.
Tells you why we now see so many people living on the street. In the past we had these massive institutions for people to be housed in, regardless of state of treatment pre war times, they at least housed and fed those who could not function in the world. They employed many people in these smaller communities and if preserved could be housing again when housing is sorely needed. If we build a facility today they are so ugly, sad to lose our historical buildings.
My dad worked there for 35 years . I have many memories of going there to see him at work as a kid .
What was it like?
The building at 0:28 has unfortunately been demolished. It was called the Clarence O. Cheney Memorial Building, and was built in 1952.
If these places were still open, today we would not have homeless population we have now it's sad to see these hospitals closed they didn't need the cruel treatment they did on the residents that were housed in those institutions.
Have lived in this area for over 20 years now. Got a Mavic Air a year ago and finally explored this property last weekend. Was met at "official" entrance gate by security guards. I asked politely if I could video and they said no, "private property" so I went down the road a bit, off property and filmed from there. Much transition has occurred since the above was filmed. Am now learning how to edit my resulting video, etc. and may someday, upload it. Great job.
This Hospital is fucking ginormous
I believe my uncle's wife ended up here
Did this place serve patients from Jefferson county N.Y.
I wish I knew I believe we all drove there from Watertown when she was inpatient.
I was 5 I remember that the drive was sooo long.
I'm trying to learn about the family we didn't know.
This mammoth place has always intrigued me. Best vid I’ve ever watched illustrating the immense size & the deterioration of the premises.
Thanks so much. Love it 💜
Shame that such a magnificent structure (architecturally speaking) has fallen into such dis-repair.
It was once a very beautiful place a home for many.
A home for many who now wander the streets homeless. So sad.
The grounds were gorgeous, and well taken care of. It was like a beautiful, huge park. A place of much love, and violence.
Nice! Thanks for posting. I've been too scared of getting chased away by police to actually go there on foot
I stayed at the edge of the property so that I could leave quickly if needed.
If you go at like sunrise your good a guard tends to come around at night I've had to run from him a few times to get away there's also a truck parked on the road in but it's there 24/7
Dang: that is one great big place.
Awesome footage!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS !!! i love love this place so much . thank you thank you thank you
My pleasure. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
SOOOOOOO good
Nice job. Surreal, and creepy. I think I saw some ghosts peeking out in some of your shots. :D
I get gooseflesh from just driving past that place on Rt. 9.
GREAT JOB CHAD
Well Done!!!
Still Standing ?
Yes, this is recent footage.
Chad Fust Thank you for replying, I'm a UrbEx photographer and was hoping to see this place before demolition
I'd be surprised if they demolished the entire place. There are a number of immense buildings.
I was just there yesterday they wiped all the trees away and there is a lot of construction shit
It's mostly still standing as of yesterday.
Equipment?
I used a DJI Mavic Pro to film this.
