Let's do some green giant arborvitae propagating! I think you guys are going to like this one. I've had a lot of requests over the months of people wanting to learn how to propagate green giants or any other arborvitae and I finally got around to it. This method of propagating will also work for rooting just about any hardwood cuttings.

Dude - I totally get it! I thought I was plant obsessed living up at my parents' in the Bay Area, now I'm almost out of control after buying my new house in Los Angeles. Cloning and propegating is easier with the weather down here. I basically started with a clean slate and no vegetation but a lawn on my property. I had all the excuses in the world to clone and multiply the hell out of all the trees, shrubs, succulents, and plants I had been growing up at my parents' home.
IT'S BEEN A BLAST terraforming my property from a concrete grassland to lush, sub tropical, paradise in the loud and noisy, hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. I think we can all do our part to help with climate change and sustain our planet by making and planting more trees. Thanks, Mike!

I'm in Torrance so we are in the same climate. I have never done propagation before but want to start. What type of soil do you recommend?

@@pkswede I propagate in a moist medium that is easily draining. And I use a black growers pot from home depot (which tend to be taller and slender) so the whole cutting can fit inside as I cover the top with a punctured saran wrap and secure with an elastic band. This moisture-rich environment allows for drainage on the bottom and evaporation on the top while sustaining the cutting until they root. This method is convenient as the pot can act as a growers pot until the roots fill the medium (so no second step to pot up individually from a group-bin propagation like above). My mixture is the free mulch the city gives away (I like using the "black-gold" type of compost that is fine and I mix with perlite (heavy) in the winter. I use less perlite in the summer and add vermiculite to the compost mix. I've adjusted my mix a few times to accommodate for drier winters and wetter summers - so please adjust yours accordingly to your microclimate. Happy growing!

He is so excited about everything that is going on with the plants that it definitely get you intrigued for what is going on. LOL, loved Steve Irwin! It's not too late to take cuttings of softwood material and then there are broad leaf evergreens that can be taken as semi-hardwood cuttings in the late summer.

I wish my high school science teachers had been even half as engaging and passionate about teaching and exploring the natural world as you are.
As for the folks complaining about your pulling up cuttings toy view, this is done as taking a survey sample in propagating houses dromedary time to time. Usually further along in the process. Those are then discarded into compost! You're not doing anything wrong and your results show it.

It certainly is a disease. I'm addicted to berry plants right now. I find myself sitting out in the yard staring at my raspberries and blackberries tip rooting in summer. In winter I'll sit and stare at my grape, currant, and elderberry cuttings. I think it's magical that I can put a stick into soil and make a new plant grow. I really can't get enough of it.

Hi Mike. Thank you again for so much information. Three years ago I trim about 1 feet long pieces of my neighbors Giant Arborvitae that was coming into my property and add some hormone to the cuttings, and just stuck them in the ground in my backyard and have over 70% success. This Winter I'm using them in my opposite site of my property for a privacy fence.

You use triple ground pine so can you use coarse sand ? I use rooting powder then water in good and put in a white plastic bag then just water every 2 weeks and wait 2 months. I have not been successful yet.
What do I need a heat pad or a hoop house?
I've never been able to fo much that is good but I keep trying your methods. I hope that before I die I can shake these inadequate feelings.
How can I get better so I can have giant arborvitae for border 😫 fencing but getting old and now got a non cancerous nodule in my lunv for since Christmas 2021. My growth is growing better than my cuttings.
When cutting off branches should I take them off the top of the bigger ones? Or would it be better off the side? I need som help sir forestlips. You are so blessed to get so many roots.

I can relate with the obsession. My dad would root camelias & azaleas with favorite cuttings from friends. Those that took became beautiful bushes in our yard. I was a Daddy's girl. That's where my excitement began. I remain awestruck with creation. It's a beautiful world. Just love your videos!

Bought 65 of these trees back in march thinking that would be to much but they didnt go very far so I stumbled upon this video and I've tried three ways to propagate so far and got a tiny greenhouse going In the back yard hopefully I can get some roots you think you where excited u ain't seen nothing btw love the updates on your trees keep them coming

I usually don't bother to click the LIKE button or comment on videos, but this video is awesome! It appears that I did my cuttings wrong (too large), but since it's still an early spring, I 'll go out right now and make a few thousand cuttings from my Emerald Green trees. In a few years I will hopefully be able to use the new little happy trees to create a few acre maze or labyrinth on my farm.
Glad you enjoyed the video! You can definitely propagate those Emerald Green trees like crazy and have more than you know what to do with them. I just planted out all the cuttings I took 2 years ago, potted up the cuttings I took last year, and took more cuttings a few days ago. It's a perpetual machine and it's relatively free!
@@MikeKincaid79 I was too optimistic. I only got a few hundred, but I also got 25 black currant cuttings. I prefer to grow edible plants, mostly strawberries and herbs, incl. exotic ones, like stevia. It is hard to grow from seeds, so I have propagated those from cuttings. I freeze-dry berries and vegetables so I can eat them during the winter. I think my collection has now grown beyond 100 different strawberry varieties including the Alpine strawberries, red and white. My favorite is wild white strawberry which produces runners (usually Alpine varieties don't). I got 3 plants from a total stranger, next year I had 33 and a year later 900 from the runners alone, plus thousands of seeds. Right now I am exited about Framberry (Strasberry), a cross between strawberry and raspberry. I recently got them and they are already flowering. I want to build an organic tourist farm on my 51 acres, where people from around the world can stay and eat anything they can find growing on my land or grow their own food.
That sounds absolutely fantastic and when it's ready, I'd love to come and visit!

Ahhh! The Arb my favorite! This is amazing. My husband and I plan in a few years after he retires to buy our own land to go crazy planting all we want. And one huge thing is lining up a whole lot of these guys. This is perfect to start propagating them and one day actually planting them in our future forever home! Even if we have to pull these guys to wherever else we are send to it’s so worth it. Thank you for all your knowledge and passing this addiction to my husband lol!💚💚💚💚💚💚

Roses are a fun plant to propagate. They have such beautiful and fragrant blooms but unfortunately the deer chew them all to pieces around here, even with the thorns.
They are great for privacy, not so great when they start stealing your light. Another great video Mike.
They are getting planted on the borders of my 10 acres so they're over 100 feet from the house. I actually want the shade they will bring so that I can plant more rhododendrons under them. Do you have some growing in your yard and if so, how do you like them?

Now I will go back and like the last ten of your videos I've already watched. :) I made an impulse decision last Spring and planted 190 green giants in a line!!! I may have lost 3 so far but the rest are good. I bought a house in the middle of nowhere and 2 months later some nice people built there metal house right in the middle-side of our backyard view. I believe good things can come out of unexpected things like this, and now I am addicted to cloning plants and trees. Funny how that worked. I really want to clone "propagate" my giants now, in July, but I know I probably shouldn't. So I will just get my medium ready for next Spring. Thanks again for the cool video's and hard work. Peace
Right on! Glad you're enjoying the videos. Plant propagation is a lot of fun and you can really churn out a ton of plants for next to nothing, right at home. I love the green giants. Give them a ton of water through the summer and they'll grow faster than you can imagine. I just planted a new row and am watering weekly. The new row is growing much faster than the green giants I planted years ago and didn't water. Maybe the new row will catch up in a few years. Have fun man!

Mike one idea is to plant a Sunflower next to one of those in pot and tie to the tree. Just a cheap idea to hold them to assist them in growing straight.
After a couple years of working with them now and seeing how they grow I'm finding that they eventually find their central leader and start shooting straight up. I really like the sunflower idea though and will use it in the future, thanks!

I just love your videos. I am a huge plant geek. I love all the propagation you do you and just watched your video on fertilizing with urine and Wood ash. This is an amazing idea. I was thinking about people who live in places where it is hard to get good fertilizer and realized everyone can get urine and Wood ash. This idea could really help lots of people grow the food they need. Keep up your good work!
Well, I followed your instructions on how to get more Hydrangeas & I was hoping for a 50% survival rate and got 💯% survival rate. Wound up with 118 new Hydrangeas to put in the yard. Now I'm going to do these Green Giants. On a sad note, I tried doing the Red Japanese Maples and had no success but I'm looking back at what I did wrong.

I did two recently, and buds started to form on node, I looked at them almost every day, but I will have to wait until the Spring to plant them
Beautiful green giant arborvitaes. A few of mine are dying. I planted 100 and have lost 5. The ones in full sun. Johnny be good or Johnny be bad.
Those Green Giants definitely need a lot of water in the beginning when getting established. Once they get established though, they're suppose to be drought tolerant. I haven't lost one yet but I put down a thick layer of wood chips around them and it stays pretty moist at the roots. Try mulching yours.

After seeing this the first time I used this method on 100 trimmed but less thick and robust Rocky Mountain Juniper heel cuttings in my polytunnel in December, where the soil temperature is around 65F. I put a couple inches of PROMIX all purpose over the soil to keep it pretty light and reduce possible mold. Light permitting, it should be good with a close shroud over top so I don't have to mist too often. I misted with grapefruit seed extract and peroxide as I have to repair my dangerous modified microwave oven circuitry colloidal silver maker. As a health coach, I'd prefer to use CS with peroxide even on people, for 1000 times the biocidal activity and longer residual effect. I use is as a brief soak for cuttings and in the sprayer.
Thuja plicata grows here all over so to change it up I have my eye on more rare Junipers: a very bushy straight out probably Sabina, a white variegated green columnar Juniper I haven't identified and an Ashe with nice form to get cuttings from. You can understand my enthusiasm for the variegated branch. Naturally I want some air layers. Wish me luck...

I understand your excitement in the rooting of the plants. I get excited everytime I make a new plant Common sense would tell you that if you do the same technique with your cuttings all will live, or all will die. So have you figured out why do some live, and why do some die? My next question is after you made your cuttings and they were all lined up in that neat little pile(I bet you didn't think anyone would notice that), you said they already had their rooting hormone on them. Should I be letting the cutting sit for a few minutes with the hormone on before sticking them in the box? I usually make all my holes ahead of time, dip in hormone, and right into hole. Also, what hormone do you use. I know there is a kind for each, hardwood and softwood, but can you use a hardwood hormone on softwood. Most of the hormones sold at the big box stores I think are just for softwood I'm guessing. Not very often do I get hardwoods to root unless all the planets are lined up just right. One thing I noticed, at least for here on the south, is to stick your cuttings on the New Moon cycle. I have tried it at all cycles and the New Moon works the best. Go figure the old farmers really knew their stuff. Right now I have enough Lipstick plants rooting for about 5 large baskets and 4 different types of hydrangeas. We have had 15 inches of rain for the month of May so at a time when everything is starting to burn up, we are dealing with some rot and fungus. 1.) When it comes to man made "stuff" you can assume that if you use the same technique each part will come out the same but in nature it just doesn't work like that. All a person can do is accept it and realize that we are a part of it and have no expectations. We can try to guide nature in a direction but she's going to do what she wants in the end.
2.) I've been experimenting with leaving the hormone on for a few minutes before I stick the cuttings to ensure it adheres to the cutting better. I don't make holes in the medium so some of the hormone rubs off as I stick the cuttings. If you make holes then you don't have to worry about this but I don't like to make holes except for softwood cuttings.
3.) I've heard all the "old wives tales" about when to stick cuttings. The only one I adhere to is that you shouldn't take rhododendron cuttings while it's raining. That being said, I've had success both ways and I think it's more superstition and tradition for me than anything. I don't worry about moon cycles. The condition of the wood is what matters most and that is determined by age of the wood, weather for weeks and months leading up to the cutting, time of year, etc. I use Hormodin 3 rooting hormone right now but have used a variety of hormones over the years including dip and grow and have had success and failures with all of them. I can't stress this point enough. Hormones are an extra boost to the rooting process and should never replace the other factors such as condition of the wood, the propagation environment, and how you care for the cutting.

Thankyou I love your video I also love propagation, I’ve made some moldy messes and success. I am going to try and do this with my green giants, I am going to bring them indoors, rooting hormone, and I’m going to use a heating pad my mom use to put on her back as an experiment.
