Nice video. I'm planning to plant leyland cypress cuttings and I came across your video. Thanks for the info. It's winter time here in Washington, DC. I'll start planting and put it in our sun room for now. Regards to your Filipina wife. I'm also a Pinay. God bless..

back in the summer I started some Lemon Trees from seed, where I live Lemon Trees won't survive the winter freeze and I don't have a good spot for sunlight due to the window layout, so I went out and bought a grow tent (on Amazon, 2' deep, 4' wide and like 5' tall) and a cheap $20 2 ft. LED Grow Light from Lowes, then i got 3 3-tier metal racks where it's like 10-12" between tiers and they perfectly filled the tent, this gave me 3 levels tall of pots, I moved my Lemon Trees, my rooted cuttings from my Crape Myrtle and now i'm expanding, I took some cuttings from my Peach Tree a few weeks ago and 6 of the 8 cuttings are pushing out leaves and one has a bud getting ready to flower, I just did 8 more cuttings from the peach tree last night, my next goal is to propagate some of my leyland cypress so I can build a good natural privacy/sound wall from the 2 lane highway right next to my house, I use a similar method on the trapping the moisture, but what I do is instead of half a milk jug I cut the tops off of Hi-C Gallon jugs, drill a few holes in the bottom for drainage and then I set the top back on after inserting the cuttings.

Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae is replacing Leyland Cypress as the go to large screen privacy hedge. I produce both in my nursery and anyone who knows about both will get the Thujas. I agree with using the Rooting Hormone not so much for the hormone but for the Fungicide that comes with it. The old-timers I talked to just stuck their cuttings into the mud on the banks of a creek Between July and Sept then harvested them between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

How long will it take the Leland before I can plant them. I have no where to store them in winter. I will start to root in spring. Thanks.

    • @johnliberty3647
      @johnliberty3647 2 года назад

@@crawwwfishh3284 Not saying it won't work because I never tried it but Leyland Cyprus may not root easily in spring. This is what I have been told by the guy who showed me how and when to do it. I can only speak accurately one what I did and that was to take cuttings between July 15th and Sept 15th and prep them. Put them in sand (vermiculite works better I am told) until Thanksgiving.
Try it in spring and share the results, for all I know that is even better but it goes against everything I heard. What I hear and truth are not always the same thing.
Also for all I know your climate is different and spring cuttings work out perfect where you live.

Great Video! Both you and the wife did a premo job. One of the things that I hate is when the person is giving instructions and the person with the camera cuts off what they are doing. Your wife followed your actions great. I also appreciate the fact that you do not waste our time with doing the same thing 10 X and accepting the fact that we are not idiots once or twice works for me. Keep up the good work to both of you. Sometimes the photographer is taken for granted or if a person is doing the video by themselves it is really bad.

I have a cypress number 14 trees purchased from a nursery a year and a half ago and lengths ranging from one to one and a half meters and planted in the ground
At that time the growth was fast upward while the trunks on the stem were slow
Its height is now about 4. Meters to 3 meters
But the problem we are facing now is the appearance of yellowing in the trunks on the leg with the appearance of spray on it from the bottom of the tree to the middle of the leg, while from the middle of the leg to the top is still green.
The tree also began to bend towards the ground
Knowing that I have used insecticides and fungi to combat this disease, but it is useless
I hope you answer before yellowing reaches the top of the tree and die

We're at about 2k feet in zone 7 (central Virginia). That's a great buy you got on those trees, and unfortunately, you are correct with the problems that leyland cypress have. It's weird. We lost one this past year to the disease that turns them solid brown, but all the others in line with it were unaffected. We'll replace the one we lost with a new one of similar height and hope for the best. Thanks for the comment and questions.

Hello, thank you for posting this "Homsteading". I have a question. I have not finished watching your video yet, i am only on second minute. My question is: we live in England in Saddleworth, greater Manchester. Now, we built a tree wall from the same trees you are having on your video. They have been the same size or slightly bigger when we bought them around 20years ago, slightly more . We got more than 50 of those trees and now they are high around 7 meters and more so they created nice tree wall of lenght around 50meters. Now i would like to do the same at the bottom of the drive which could make nice tree wall but i do not want to start clonning then from such a small piece and wait at least 5 years to get them into some reasonable size. Could i cut some thick branches from our 20year old trees that are already at least 3 feet long? Lets say if i cut a branch, that is already an inch thick or more, will they get roots or do they have to be such a young tiny thin pieces? If i could cut branch that is already as long as your two trees on the video, i could cut off easily 50 pieces of our old trees so if you say they can grow 3-4feet per year, in two years time we could have nice tree wall of the size of an average adult men. Also, it is sexond of april bow, does that matter? Does it have to be some particular season for branches to grow roots? Also, the trees that have been planted more than 20years ago, some of them are nice close to each other so they created sort of a thick wall, but on some places for example closer to the main road where developement of two new houses has been going on since last year, i can see gaps between the trees so the privacy is not as good as it was bedore. Could i fit the yong cuts (if they get roots) in between those old trees? Wont they push each other away? The old ones are gapped around some of them just two feet from each other and some are as twise as much so i can see those gaps. There must be mature roots from old trees so weather is any good to try to fit this young cuts in between. Thank you.

WOW! 50+ dollars for a 4feet tree! I live in Spain and everyone complains about the price of them being expensive in the garden centres. How much do we pay? well converting euro to dollars it would be about $4.50 for a 4 foot tree! I won'tbe complaining anymore. You can buy a 10foot tree for around $10.

That would be too much foliage to support with no root system. That's the reason why they keep them small.

Nice one. Why do you need to cover it and keep it in such a humid environment? Is it the type of plant that requires this humidity or is it all seedlings or cuttings that require it?

To our understanding, this helps with the rooting process by minimizing it's bio-dome. It's like a miniature little greenhouse/controlled system. Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
