  • The USC Trojans and Lincoln Riley are entering a different era of its program, one without Caleb Williams and the PAC-12 Logo on their jersey. The biggest concerns as of late have fallen on the Trojans' defense. Can Lincoln Riley turn the defense around, or will it all be on the offense again? Cody Bellaire and Andy Staples break it all down here.

    I know the track record and why it hasn’t worked in the past but last season didn’t sit well with Lincoln. I feel as it fueled him for this off season and proof is with the defensive coaching staff he brought in. The bowl game and spring game were both great performances by our defense. We don’t need to be elite or even that great. If we can get a top 50 defense then we will be good. If we can keep the kids we have committed now , I believe we will be even better come next year with this staff. One year at a time, we have a major hole in the middle but with proper coaching I believe we can be a decent defense. The difference this year is coaching and I believe in the coaches we brought in.

    SC fan here - I think SC fans need to have proper expectations regarding the defense for this season. It’s a Lincoln Riley lead football team and Offense will never be the problem for them
    However, they were the 121st ranked defense in cfb last year. To the SC fans that think we’re gonna shoot up 100+ spots and be a top 10 defense - I would pump the brakes there. That’s not going to happen.
    However, improving to that high 50s-60s range? That is more realistic of an expectation and would be a tremendous turnaround and achievement for them.

    • @RidgeRider88
      @RidgeRider88 3 месяца назад +3

      If you are really an SC fan, then you know that D'Anton Lynn brought up UCLA in one season far further than 50-60, and now he has Henny and company with him. You would also know how much bigger the players were when they showed up for Spring camp. Just sayin'.

    • @chuckincharlie776
      @chuckincharlie776 3 месяца назад +1

      @@RidgeRider88 I’ve been a die hard SC fan since 2001. I’m also a realist.
      I love the Lynn and Henny hires and I think they will absolutely turn the defense around. But you need to take a number of different factors into account with UCLAs turnaround last year. To name just a few, and most importantly, they had one of the weakest schedules in all of CFB. Secondly, they had the best pass rusher in all of CFB in Latu, and one of the overall best pass rushes which helped make the secondary look a lot better than they *probably* were, as well as great interior lineman.
      Again these aren’t bad things, but they need to be taken into consideration. UCLA was in the high 80s defensively after 2022, and they improved about 65 spots. That’s phenomenal. But high 80s is a lot different than 121. USCs defense was arguably the worst unit they have EVER had. Jumping 100+ spots in one offseason is just borderline unrealistic. I think our secondary, LBs and edge rushers are going to be significantly improved, but interior DL is a legitimate weakness and a legitimate problem. Henny is an elite coach. But at some point, you need to also have great players. Outside Bear, they have no one. And if Bear goes down, well

      Well I'd hold my breath on the offensive line. There was the idea that Justin Dedich moving to center last year was going to be helpful, and it wasn't. Nobody knows how the Jonah Monheim move to center will work out. Could work or could he another Justin Dedich situation. Overall, they have to be way way better in the run game. They were averaging 168.1 rush yards a game in the first half of the schedule, but once they faced better teams, it went down to 110.1 rush yards. Lincoln better start incorporating more pro style concepts or plays that have the quarterback under center. I rewatched last years games, and it felt he was running only 5 formations and about 5 plays off of it. Especially when he would run reverse or a trick play, it was always the same one.

    On defense our strength will be our secondary, so expect a stacked box to stop the run and CB's, safeties on islands. Looking at that schedule only Penn State, Notre Dame, LSU and Nebraska, will have good to ok QB play. This will be a top 10 to 15 defense. We only need to look at what D. Lynn did at UCLA against probably the best class of QB's to come out of the PAC ever last year. Defensively our weakness is depth on the d-line. The first string will be good everything after that is a question mark.

    • @robertniddleman
      @robertniddleman 3 месяца назад

      UCLA didn’t face Washington or Oregon last year so they didn’t face the top offenses nor the top 2 QBs from the PAC 12. If you look at defensive rankings against ranked teams, UCLA and USC were ranked similarly last year. Lynn is not the instant upgrade you think he is.

UCLA had Latu and Toia. USC really just has Bear as of right now. USC’s defensive numbers will be better than last year simply because they are facing worse offenses in the B10 but I wouldn’t expect any real meaningful change in year 1. And the real concern for you guys should be if you aren’t having a good season do guys like Terry and Gibson stick?
