The three Christian communities that have uneasily shared their holiest site for centuries are embarking on a large-scale project to restore the ancient stone floor of the Jerusalem basilica.
The project includes an excavation that could shed light on the rich history of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City, built on the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified, died and rose again, the central event of the faith celebrated every spring on Easter.
It marks a further improvement of ties among the Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic churches. In the past, they have come to blows over the site, which they share under a delicate arrangement dating back to the mid-19th century. Three other denominations also have clearly defined access to the church.
“The cooperation among the three communities is the most important thing,” said Rev. Francesco Patton, the head of the Catholic Franciscan order devoted to preserving Christian sites in the Holy Land. “It shows to the entire world that it is possible among Christians of different churches and communities to have a fraternal relationship.”
The three communities came together in 2016 to restore the Holy Edicule on the site where Jesus is believed to have been buried in a cave tomb - the first large-scale renovation since the clean-up after an 1808 fire.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is a church in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. According to traditions dating back to the fourth century, it contains the two holiest sites in Christianity: the site where Jesus was crucified, at a place known as Calvary or Golgotha, and Jesus's empty tomb, where he is believed by Christians to have been buried and resurrected. After allegedly seeing a vision of a cross in the sky in 312, Constantine the Great converted to Christianity, signed the Edict of Milan legalising the religion, and sent his mother Helena to Jerusalem to look for Christ's tomb. With the help of Bishop of Caesarea Eusebius and Bishop of Jerusalem Macarius, three crosses were found near a tomb, leading the Romans to believe that they had found Calvary. Constantine ordered in about 326 that the temple to Jupiter/Venus be replaced by a church. After the temple was torn down and its ruins removed, the soil was removed from the cave, revealing a rock-cut tomb that Helena and Macarius identified as the burial site of Jesus. A shrine was built, enclosing the rock tomb walls within its own. In 327, Constantine and Helena separately commissioned the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem to commemorate the birth of Jesus. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built as separate constructs over the two holy sites: the great basilica (the Martyrium visited by Egeria in the 380s), an enclosed colonnaded atrium (the Triportico) with the traditional site of Calvary in one corner, and across a courtyard, a rotunda called the Anastasis ("Resurrection"), where Helena and Macarius believed Jesus to have been buried. The church was consecrated on 13 September 335. Every year, the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates the anniversary of the Dedication of the Temple of the Resurrection of Christ

Great video tour. I am watching this in England on Good Friday 2024. I will be going later to share with my fellow Catholics the Way of The Cross. This combines Prayers, meditation and reflection on The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

This walk, brings me wonderful memories of my trip las September , we walk exactly this path, so I remember so well every single place like if it was yesterday. We ate dinner at the Austrian hotel, very nice place we almost stay there.we were so lucky not to have so many tours around us. We did all this ourselves. Great trip!

Good morning! Actually Mary had other children. Daughters and Sons. They are mentioned in the new testament. The book of James was written by Jesus brother.
There will always be disagreement about Mary having other children. Since Joseph's age isn't clear, some say he was a widow and had other children before he was with Mary, and after Jesus birth she didn't have any other babies, but Joseph's sons were called brothers of Jesus. Others say joseph was a young, poor man who had never been married, similar to mary. Others say that cousins were called brothers of Jesus. If Jesus had other children why did Jesus give the care of Mary to John? Others say John wasn't the only person to take care of mary. My point is we can use writings from other sources than the Bible to prove any point of view, but very little is clear in the Bible. So, if it's not clear in the Bible, I don't think it's important to God.

The terrace with a "village" is really decaying fast, and is sad that two Christians churchs can't unite and get over of what happen in 1967 when the Israelis took over Jerusalem, evicted the Egyptians and the ownership passed to the Ethiopians, although if they were good Christians should have refused and recognize that the Egyptians were there first. It had to do with the fact that the Egyptian government was a war with Israel, that was said not long ago in a tv doc. When you went inside, I wanted to scream and tell you DON'T! As soon as one enters, you can see that death resides in those walls, they are cover with the deathly fungi black-mold and the place is filthy.I think the biterness between the two of them, is reflecting on the walls. Too bad you can't show the dig, but you know a lot of people who know people that maybe are working in the place, and could make a clandestine video. Nothing wrong with that and is not even a sin. The place belongs to all Christians around the world, and they should not be hiding it, in fact, the place could have a fence but be open for everybody to see what they are working on, otherwise seems like a conspiracy of something. Are they hidden bombs there? I'msure they are not. Chistians from everywhere should demand to see what is going on.

PS you may already know this but being a person with an Anglican background, which is very similar to Catholic, we obssrve Lent. You know there's 40 days of Lent. But Sundays are not counted because they're considered feast days of the Lord, like mini days of Easter.... So if you count from Ash Wednesday, counting every day except Sundays ( don't count Easter as it is the ultimate Sunday),
you'll come up with a total of 40 days. All of the non- Sundays are considered days in which you should give up something in a sacrificial way. Days of fasting, like your day of Atonement ( Yom Kippur), are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This is the Western Church.
The Eastern Orthodox ( which has a different calendar) , blessings upon them, follow even more severe fasting ☦️.

Heya Zahi, I thought the 1st church was Jesus brother ( more likely 1/2 brother) James the Just ...the kind of underground that has metal bars around it and a greek orthodox priest has the keys if you ask him, he will usually show it...right next to it is a family who knows about it ....thanx for another great video. I will try and send you something for your fund next month. I wish you could tell us more about your friend ( John, Robin?!) that sleeps on a mattress next to the Sepulcher Church. Also, thank you for trying to understand and tolerate Christians as I know many Jews hate and spit on us....we are not bothered by this because Jesus told us ''many will hate you in my name.'' That is hardly a passing thought if we are to love others and do what he (Jesus) says. We don't all follow the corruption of the Vatican either. (since 400 CE) Just another sinner in a hat w/a special staff. Only Yahweh is the only great and real truth.
