this was a good list. I did leather working many years ago as a teenager and I'm just getting back into it...and I can't get over how many tools there are now.
I didn't do much stitching so I basically just used my olfa knife, an edger, a creaser, a hide mallet and then assorted punches that I bought just because I liked them.
I did use a rotary hole punch and that was fine until I started making bags and the rotary punch couldn't reach far enough. if I had to do it over again, I would have bought a single hole punch first. Just get the size you need for a project you're actually going to do. This is how I buy tools and gadgets for other crafts, and I don't feel like I've wasted my money.

It sucks so much when you just can't reach with the rotary punch! You try forcing it by crumpling up the leather haha! I definitely appreciate my individual punches now.
      Thanks for watching!

thank you. i just started trying to do hand sew leather. i have those black stitching chisels from amazon and they won't go through the leather. now I have a strop and will sharpen them and try again. and yes I have that beginners kit LOL.

I rewatched this, not because I'm not still a beginner, but to see how far I've come. These tips are really good, and I think underestimated by new people. Strop... Strop more than you think you need to. Skiving is a learned skill that is made so hard with a skiver that isn't really sharp. Don't be scared to mess up. So many good me this, but it's hard to remember sometimes. Don't compare your stuff to others on RUclips. As a new person if you manage to cut and stitch a pouch to weight down your patterns, I made two with fishing weights, you are winning. Ability and skill will come over time.

I tried to find items one by one but it was getting very pricey...I found a kit for like 32 euros...had everything in it(including the overstitch roller thingies that I don't use). I actually made a couple of things just using those tools. One can definitely get one of those kits if they can find them on a discount if they want to just try and see if they like leatherwork, before dumping loads of cash.
I got me a maul from a local Hardwear store..a cutting mat, some adhesive glue and sandpaper. Then ordered a punching pad,an edge slicker, edge beveler( yes..the kit did not have one..I was shocked too) and tokonole. Oh and a button setter kit with 350 pieces of buttons...they might not be ideal but for 14 euros...who cares! Also got the John James needles from their store. Definitely worth it!
I also just spend 54 euros on fieblings pro leather dye (black, walnut and green),fieblings contact cement, fieblings neatsfoot oil, and fieblings finish! Found a store for all interested that are in Europe...the shipping was only 11.50 unlike if you buy all that from eBay.
Thank you for the tips! There are things we can cheap out on and still get the job done.

Great point on buying tool you don’t need some of it unfortunately might be unavoidable depending ...I bought an overpriced maul at Tandy leather then I had some of my own mallets different types of mallets and different types of hammers I actually started using those and never touch the maul ... I couldn’t even return the maul because I beat it up and it’s made out of cheap material and some of that pricking irons had punched holes in the surface of it ...what a waste of cash also a lot of people just by the nature of being a sales person aren’t gonna tell you that you can go to Harbor freight and get a much better and cheaper tool

    • @BlackFlagLeatherGoods
      @BlackFlagLeatherGoods  3 года назад +2

Oh you're absolutely right! I use quite a few Home Depot tools over leather specific ones too.
You can also end up with stuff you don't need buying those leather working kits on amazon. Some of them have a few things you need altogether mixed in with a bunch of garbage but the price for it all is decent.
      Thanks for your comment!

You have what I have. I've never seen another person do it. I can't make eye contact at all, and when I do, it puts people off. Like I'm almost hurting them emotionally. After any interaction with me, people take a deep breath and exhale, like my anxiety is contagious. Over the years (only started in my late 20s) it's been the worst part of my life. So much of life is face to face interaction and that's just sort of barred from me forever I guess.
I don't have any motivational words to say. I just wanted to say hi friend, you're not alone, or, well, not *completely* *forever* alone.

    • @usernamemykel

I had a "landlady" who wouldn't make eye contact during conversation, which makes one think "What is it that she wants to hide?" It is said that the "eyes are the windows to the mind", so then if one purposefully averts another's eyes, is he/she/it hiding something?
