    If you like videos about guitar sound engineering, I made a playlist about just that and added this video to it. As of today, there are 6 videos in this kind of format and I have outlines for 6 more. ruclips.net/video/g3kTngQbQok/видео.html

    Hey Joe, I feel you made this video for me 🤣 I was the guy in the Iridium group who posted about the engineer saying my signal was way to hot 🔥. Thanks very much for clearing this up and I can also show this to the sound engineer if needs be 👍🏼

      @@AndrewMooreLearningLicks Thanks. The incidental relationship between using a Line Level Isolator with XLR connectors and a Mic Preamp that also uses XLR connectors is something engineers will have to face more as LI Boxes are marketed toward guitar amp modelers and if they begin appearing as part of more pedalboards instead of DI Boxes. The similar looks and connectors of the two can be misleading.

    thanks for this video. Do I understand correctly, that If i have an amp modeler (I have uafx dream), but use short cables out of it (2xTS) in to my audio interface; that there are no benefits of using a di box? (i'm not playing live at the moment in a venue, but only at home).

    My question is, given the DI/LI is at the end of chain after an amp sim and/or effects, what is the best practice/tip for sending a robust but not overwhelming signal on to the DI/LI?

    • @jmkmusicpedals
      @jmkmusicpedals  Год назад

      Correct, you want to avoid distortion in the DI caused by too hot of a signal. You have to use your judgement with that. To help, some DI's do have a Pad switch to lower a hotter signal at the DI input.

    HX Stomp has Jack TRS balanced output. So why do I need a line isolator? Can't I just use a XLR adaptor?

    • @jmkmusicpedals
      @jmkmusicpedals  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes. 0:32 Though an LI can be useful for mechanical isolation using its isolation transformer, it's not going to be necessary for 99.9% of applications where you are already running a balanced, line level signal. Anyway, the video wasn't really about the HX Stomp, it's just what I had handy.

    Hi, thx for those very usefull videos. I have a question as a hx stomp user : i'm using a TS cable from the stomp output to the mixer inpout and i feel like the reverb is really less present than when i use headphones or a guitar AMP. Do you think a TRS câble could fix this problem ?
    Thx !

  • @jannik19191
    @jannik19191 2 года назад +1

    Good video, but it should be noted that the HX Stomp actually has balanced TRS outputs, so a di box isn't actually needed, only a TRS -> XLR cable. The outputs can also be switched between line and mic level.

    • @jmkmusicpedals
      @jmkmusicpedals  2 года назад +2

      True about the balanced TRS outputs. The HX Stomp was used as a stand in for any kind of modeler, but definitely worth pointing out, thanks. However, on my version at least, the output cannot be switched to Mic Level. They can be switched to either Line or Instrument level.
      If you are running the HX Stomp to a Mic Preamp (by just adapting the cable), you could end up with the same "Signal is Too Hot" scenario I was showing using the LI Box. Of course, you could simply turn down. The HX Stomp makes that easy. If you are running into a Mic Preamp, my advice is to go with a Mic Level Signal (adding a DI Box if necessary), but if you don't, you can still make it work depending on the gear in question.
      Also, to make this discussion on simply adapting TRS to XLR from the HX Stomp complete, you also want to make sure Phantom Power is off for the Mic Pre. HX Stomp probably has some kind of protection on the output, but just be aware of the possibility that power could be making its way back from the mixer to the HX Stomp if you simply adapt the cable and plug into a Mic Pre. (There's no isolation being provided by a box in the middle).

      @@jmkmusicpedals Thanks for the reply! I think I might experiment a bit with my HX Stomp and my interface to see that I get some proper gain staging set up.

      I was going to say this, but with the Tonex you can get a balanced aingla aswell with the “interface” mode and you can just turn down the master volume so your not sending a hot signal

    So if i have to plug my UAFX Woodrow 55 straight to my Focusrite Clarett with a TS unbalanced cable i have to enable Instrument mode on my interface right? if i use the Canvas LI mode with XLR to XLR (Like you did in the video) do i have to enable Instrument or Line mode on the clarett? Thank you ;)

    • @jmkmusicpedals
      @jmkmusicpedals  Год назад

      I don't believe that you would use Instrument level for that device going direct. For the second situation, if your interface is the kind that automatically uses Mic Level when an XLR is plugged in, then you'll probably get best gain staging by setting the Canvas for DI mode. If you can force the XLR connection to use Line Level, then use LI mode.

    Maybe the simplest, cheapest and most trutone solution could be to use TRS to XLR connector as the Line 6 has TRS balanced left and right outputs?

  • @guille_toledo76
    @guille_toledo76 Год назад

    Excellent video. But so...How are we suppose connect the HX stomp to the FOH uf the XLR output from the Canvas is sending a HOT line level signal ???

    • @jmkmusicpedals
      @jmkmusicpedals  Год назад +1

      Match what the FOH wants by sending either DI (Mic Level) or LI (Line Level). The Canvas has that option for both DI or LI at the flick of a switch ... or just have a DI box for the broadest compatibility. Every FOH will have Mic Level inputs guaranteed.
