I really like how Coach Schakel breaks down these offenses! My JV team is working on this so we can get our first W this season! I'm putting all my cards on this offense! 7:2312:1812:4516:0017:3027:35

+Doug Schakel Coach- When going against a zone with the Modified Triangle Offense, we do a few things a little differently on the Two-Man side of the offense. (1) The Post has several options: (a) First option is when thePost comes to the elbow for the handoff to the PG and then rolls to the basket. If the PG can't get a short jumper, runner, or layup, the PG uses a backup dribble to the new Wing spot; while looking for the Rover in the short corner before the Rover continues across to the new Rover spot (remember: the Rover immediately goes to the edge of the lane on the weakside when Two-Man is being executed, then runs across the baseline toward the new Rover spot upon seeing the backup dribble....the Rover should stop, temporarily, in the short corner...it will be open quite a bit. If the Rover receives a pass, the Rover can shoot or pass inside to the Post. (b) If the defense is taking away the pass to the Post, the Post can 1) set a ball screen on the top defender, then roll to the basket. PG still has the same options as when the PG passes to the Post including the backup dribble. Or, 2) the Post can set a screen on the outside of the bottom defender that the Rover can run off of....the Post will post up after the screen. On this choice, the PG sees that the Post is not available for a pass or a top screen and the PG dribbles to the new Wing right away while looking for the Rover or the Post. (c) The Post can run up to a spot in the middle of the FT line (or even a little higher up the floor) to receive a pass and the PG still makes an "outside the elbow" cut and if no play is there, runs out to the new Wing where the Post can pass to. However, what we encourage the Post to look for is 1) a direct pass to the Center or 2) a quick pass back to the Wing and you are back into the Triangle. (d) We can run "Dribble to the Wing" option in which the PG immediately dribbles in a straight line to the new Wing. BTW, on any of these options, the PG can return the ball to the new PG (the Triangle side Wing rotates to the PG spot when we go to the Two-Man side.). And that new PG can run a quick Two-Man option on the other side. (e) Anytime we are running the Two-Man option, the Center needs to on the lookout to flash into the middle of the zone and the PG and the Post needs to be aware that the Center may open quite a bit. Hope you will find these options helpful on the Two-Man side....sounds like I need to do a video on these zone options. --Doug Schakel ***************************************************************************************************
I am not a coach of a bascketball team but this video soo good for PG , that learning possibilities to be general on the floor and make good reads and passes
I want to say Thank you Coach. Thank you! I love your videos and especially this one is what I was looking for. I'm the girls coach at our school and I have managed to turn a last year team of 2-12 to a 9-3 team. I had a system going but your videos have inspired me to reconstruct for next season. We made it to the semifinals but fell short. I will definitely be studying your system all break. Thank you! Again for the video.
Thank you for the video. My 3rd and 4th grade girls ran this offense on Saturday, January 7th, 2017. It was our first game and we only practiced the offense twice in two 60 minute practices. We had success with the two-man side. The girls had difficulty on the triangle side. The wing and center were both having trouble getting open for a pass. Hopefully we can make some adjustments and get the triangle side working better! Thanks Coach!
Coach- I am filming a couple of new videos for the Modified Triangle Offense this week and hope to have them ready in 2-3 weeks. In the meantime, email me at dougschakel@aol.com and I will send you information on how to solve those passing problems to the wing and center.
Coach, Thank you for the emails and new videos. They all have a ton of helpful information. I'm very appreciative and greatful! My 3rd and 4th grade girls team is 5-0 thus far in league running this offense. I have had numerous people comment about how organized they look for this age group. I have even had a school board member say our team is better than the junior high girls team! (I have a nine person team, only 3 have experience. We have one 60 minute practice per week.) We have a tough game coming up in a couple days where our team will be facing a half court trap and much taller girls down low. I'm hoping we can somehow still set up our offense with the added pressure. Any tips you have will be greatly appreciated! Thanks Coach!!
Alisha- Sorry, I was on vacation so this will get to you too late. Contact me again at dougschakel@aol.com and I will address the half court trap. Glad for your success! --Doug Schakel
Glad you found this youth basketball offense helpful. If you email me, I will send you some updated material that we have added since we made the video (dougschakel@aol.com)
Hello Coach, I coached with your son Matt at Mitchell HS. I would like to run this for my 7th Grade girls. We dont have a lot of talent but I need something to get easy looks against Zone & Man defenses.
+Roosevelt Cooper Coach- Matt loved Mitchell HS. Send me your e-mail address and I will send you several handouts regarding the Modified Triangle Offense.
Mike- The X cuts are against man to man. If you go to "Doug Schakel Basketball - RUclips" you will find 5 videos on the Modified Triangle Offense which include the "Spread Cuts" we use vs zone defenses.
hello, thanks for the video. Question, is there only one side of the floor for the triangle (left side), or should you teach the kids to run the triangle on either side?
You certainly can teach kids to run the Triangle on both sides of the floor. Because we were limited to a single one-hour practice per week and our BB IQ was not very high, we chose to keep it simple and always set up on the left side.
Hi Doug i have a group 5th and 6th grade boys we are a new travel team with a lot of players who have not played at a high level. Do you believe this offense could work for us.
Ryan- This offense can be used for any age-level....as I mention in the video, my son's high school team used it to win a State Championship. BTW, this video is the first of 5 videos covering the Modified Triangle Offense. If you will send your email address to "dougschakel@aol.com" I will send back even more information regarding the offense. Good luck- Doug Schakel
Doug Schakel Hi Doug. I coach AAU Highschool girls and I would like to introduce this offense to them. Could you send me the information on all the videos for this. My email is terminatorsbasketball@yahoo.com Thanks
Ryan- It is called "Modified" because we modified (or maybe a better term would be "simplified" the action compared to the Regular "Triangle Zone Offense."
Great videos! I've wanted to teach the triangle for a while and this got me started. I've got a rec team of 9 11-12 yr old boys who practice 60 minutes a week. After one practice we did a scrimmage: and they attempted to implement 0% of what we went over. Or one or two kids would, but that's not enough. Any wisdom on getting them to actually do it?
Coach Shelby- If you go to "Doug Schakel Basketball - You Tube" you will see five videos on the Modified Triangle Offense. We, too. had one 60 minute practice a week. We spent at least 45 to 50 minutes of that time on offense and the skills needed to run the offense. 10 minutes on defense. At that age, in my opinion, it is far, far more important to develop the ball skills of youth players. When they get to high school, I can teach a player to be a very good defensive player in two weeks! But ball skills take months or even years to develop. So, ball skill development is extremely important for future success of your players. The ABSOLUTE KEY to your players learning the offense in your allotted practice time, is to use the drills in the second Modified Triangle Offense video. Plenty of skill work, but just as important, the drills are pieces of the offense. So they are getting plenty of offense reps while working on their skills! "REPETITION is the mother of HABIT." If you will email me (dougschakel@aol.com), I will send you our Play Call Sheet that we use to call out the desired player movement we want in practice and in a game. It really helps. Hope to hear from you. Best- Doug Schakel
Tony- You certainly could number the positions. However, we found that our players remembered the positions and their floor locations more easily by naming each position. We used to get players saying, "Where does the 3 player go?" Not the case when the 3 is called the Wing....everybody knows where the Wing plays.
Doug Schakel Hi, Im implementing this offense for my junior high catholic school team...may I have the playcall sheet? upchurchjay@gmail.com. Can this be used for any defense Coach?
