Subaru really did lose his marbels for a good while, he wasn’t faking or acting. Betelgeuse is just so insane and off the deep end that he’s downplaying the degree of how mind broken Subaru is. Betelgeuse is essentially gatekeeping being crazy to Subaru.
Yep, indeed. People sometimes fail to see that dynamic, understandably so: it is extremely subtle and unless you've been in a similar situation to one of the 2 you won't get it right away. Another way it can be seen is that Subaru is heavily psychologically damaged (but not crazy), while Betelguese is full on insane. Same conlcusion of "Subaru ain't faking, it just seems mild to Betelguese cause he's much much much worse in terms of mental afflicitions".
The point is that Subaru didn't go crazy or insane, he chose to take the role of an insane person because it was easier than facing his own actions. It was an equally conscious effort to everything else he did before and does after and can be seen as his most cowardly act in the series.
Catatonia, in addition to being a symptom of longer-term psychological disorders (e.g. in catatonic schizophrenia) is a real condition that can happen to people who suffer from shock or a huge and sudden enough amount of trauma. Subaru's state here, that I _would_ qualify as "catatonic shock", is actually a fairly accurate representation of it, from my limited knowledge.
Nah not insane. He was disassociating at best. Petelgeuse was right. Subaru’s “crazy” would ramp up in front of people like he was trying to prove he was broken. Essentially he was running away mentally. Not that I blame him. This shit is rough. (For context Subaru is easily my favorite anime protagonist by along shot. I’m definitely not hating.)
My biggest fear was that Subaru would full tilt into using return by death into fixing everything and it kind of losing its meaning as the strongest power to the weakest guy. But immediately he regrets thinking that after seeing what happened to the village. He said it wasn't his fault because he wanted a scenario where he can use the power only he has, but not if it meant a whole ass village of people he knows getting evaporated by the magic KKK. Subaru for sure going through all of it at this point in the season lol.
That does happen in the if side stories. Particularly Greed and Pride if. Subaru dies millions of times in both. In the Pride If he manages to defeat Reinhard.
No intros. This studio goes ALL OUT on Re:Zero. they have a lot of content to put in each episode and they will often skip intros and outros for the extra time. In s2 they went flat nuts. On some of the later episodes they BOUGHT THE COMMERCIAL TIME so they could show the episode without commercials. 8:19 "reason to live - reason to die." You'd think that was Rem's best line but MAN O MAN she has some lines coming up. Glad to see another member of #TeamRem!
This episode is probably my favorite anime episode ever just because of the experience I had when first seeing it. I found this show, got instantly hooked and started binging, got to this point at 4:00 AM that day and I've never felt so much at the same time. Just sat in a trance after. So overwhelming
this shit was so messed up, it almost made me drop it when I watched it in my first time. Like, this episode gave me trauma and depression for 3 days straight. Just give my man Subaru a break.💀
Seriously that scene was more emotionally riveting and more beautifully done than 99% of Media, especially nowadays. Holy crap man, even seeing it more than 10x, it still gets me every time

When you made the comment about his survival instinct, part of it was still the mental break but also at that point he didn't want to survive, he was kinda just tired of everything, and he was in the mind that he had lost everything of value. The rest of that episode helped him realize that he did still have thing's to fight for and thing's he cared about
I’m so glad I ain’t the only one that got emotional during this episode cause that girl Rem goes above and beyond for Subaru as a result of her love for him and even though she knows he loves Emilia she still helps him just to see him smile again I really wish he ended up with Rem instead but oh well the guy likes what he likes.
This one made me almost stop watching. But as storytelling, it is a masterpiece. Dark AF, but incredibly well done. Rem is the best, and she will continue to be the best. Subaru's heart is big enough for both of them.
Yes he acted crazy. You don't go from being clinically insane to complete sanity as soon as you reset. I get he went through INSANE trauma, but just doing this does nothing but give you more trauma.
