    @OctopusEnergy. I have asked many times for someone (not from Octopus though) to prove to me how a smart meter can save me money when the standing charges go up and the unit rate keeps going up. Nobody has yet.

      Hey there, having a smart meter installed is optional and the main benefits are they make it easier to monitor your energy consumption (you'll be able to monitor your half-hourly energy use), you don't need to submit meter readings manually, and they enable you to join one of our smart tariffs. Read more here 🐙⚡ octopus.energy/blog/smart-meter-installation/

      Hi Callum, as with most things, meters tend to diminish over time which is why they are installed with a certification period. Traditional meters are now no longer manufactured so they are incredibly difficult to come by which is why we offer smart meter installations. Me just have to Princes if you have solar they need telling to allow that to be built and a lot of other basic things means that the energy companies can’t really install them now due to the software cost for them as it’s multiple thousand pounds a week per computer for the engineers that rallies fit them now so the likelihood is they can get a court order to fit a smart meter if you keep saying no because it has to be replaced

      You could go on a lower tariff if you can pull the energy between 2 and 5 AM, store it and use it during high tariff times. For example if you have an electrically heated hot water storage tank it could be heated during lowest rates. Or if you have battery storage. This alone could noticeably reduce your costs. But you have to be careful about it as the flexible rates are very high between 4 and 7PM which is about the same time many run their ovens. And it could end up costing you more.

    I tell you what happens you get told on the phone that your home can have a smart meter so you book an appointment then when they come round and fit it they tell you it won't work in rural areas yet most suppliers insist it will work and waist a day's wages. But what's worse is you cannot have a good tariff unless you have a smart meter. When you explain on the phone it won't work and they promise it will but it won't. Basically you get refused good cheap tariffs if you don't have a smart meter. Oh and them telling you you will save money by having one is bull. It's no differant no cheaper . The more you use the more it costs and you don't need a smart meter to tell you where and how to save when all you got to do is not burn gas or electric.

      Overcharging is not the meter. These are extremely calibrated devices who have been certified to international standards and are very expensive. It’s likely a computer system error on the electricity company side in that case it could happen no matter what type the faulty ones are not necessarily faulty in the most terrible way it may be the phone signal doesn’t reach them properly through a building so you have to submit a manual reading or the screen doesn’t work however they’re still away. They can be used for billing purposes most of the time.

      They can’t be sourced, but they are incredibly expensive Analog metres have to be programmed. There’s a lot of analog ones with an optical pot for communication. It basically means the reading and put on a small device and take it off so the reading will be communicated to it in a very dumb fashion just to ensure they don’t make up a reading and then someone in trouble when the next reading is different is the software for this is very expensive so a lot of the time if these companies cancel their software subscription they cannot get these metres and it’s worth knowing they could keep their subscriptions for all of this, but it would cost customers

    I live in a flat over a shop. No common (shared) areas. Shop has a tenant, I am a tenant. Electricity meter is in shop with sub meter next to it. Shop gives monthly readings to landlord who deducts my usage from main usage and bills us accordingly. He's arranged to have a smart meter fitted in the shop. Which meter will it replace? I don't want one.
    PS. How will I be billed as landlord needs both readings to make both bills separate so it seems daft to have a smart meter in a really tiny clothes shop.

    I would love a smart meter, but I have been waiting since November 2023. I installed solar panels and batteries after being told by Octopus that they would fit a dummy meter instead of a connected one because I live in the Highlands and a live meter would not have a connection even though it could connect to my wifi. I was under the impression that I would still have to submit meter readings. I am still waiting to be able to take advantage of the 🐙 deals for green energy production, but apparently, I am going to have to wait even longer. I have to say that it is very disappointing watching power go back to the grid that I am not being paid for.

    • @OctopusEnergy
      @OctopusEnergy  5 месяцев назад

      Hey there. 👋 Smart meters themselves won't be able to utilise your wifi to communicate with us and the DCC - we need to have a strong metering WAN signal in your area for the best chance to connect. If you send your details over to me on octo.ps/nudge, let's take a look at the signal in your area and see if there is anything we can do.

    • @Uduwerage
      @Uduwerage 5 месяцев назад

      @@OctopusEnergy, Thank you for responding. I have sent you a message via the above link. Many Octopus customer service members had previously informed me that I could have a dumb smart meter in the interim until the signal matters were resolved, and I would have to submit the data manually on a regular basis. At the moment, I cannot partake in your fantastic plans to fully utilise my solar and battery system to offset the reality that I live in one of the areas that produces 'Green Energy' but where we have to pay way above the national average for electricity. .

    • @OctopusEnergy
      @OctopusEnergy  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for sending that through. I'm chatting with our engineers now to see what your options are in your area. Without strong WAN coverage, it can be tricky to get a smart meter commissioned & working in smart mode. • @Uduwerage
      @Uduwerage 5 месяцев назад

      @@OctopusEnergy@OctopusEnergy , apparently, the WAN coverage uses O2, which is a bit odd in the Highlands as this does not have the same coverage as EE. If I climb the hill immediately behind me, the O2 signal is rather good, but the only residents there are deer and sheep. Oddly, the signals do not bounce down into the straths where people actually live. As I type, I am providing 2kw of power back to the grid as an unrecognised charitable contribution. Those of us living in rural areas already pay extra for things such as broadband, so I am not surprised that we are disadvantaged by the current smart meter approach. End of rant. I appreciate any help you can give me as this has been an issue since October 2023 when I had the solar and batteries installed.
