    I remember, back in the 1970s, one of my relatives had a close shave when he "tampered" with an electricity meter. Although it was inside his property, it could still be read from outside via a key-access door. Unfortunately, users of this meter soon discovered that by removing two securing wing-nuts, and dropping it forward - it stopped working! Everything was going like a dream, until he came back from the shops one day and found this message on a card slipped under his door: "Meter man called but your meter was out. It had better be in tomorrow!".

      3 phase meters the common thing was to loosen the one wire link, so only 2 phases had a current flow in them, and thus it would under read consumption. Of course in older houses with overhead feeds the old favourite was to take a wood screw, and screw it through the live incoming DCC cable, in the roof, before the meter, and use that screw, along with a wire wrapped around it, to power the water heater and the stove circuit. Neutral left in the original position, so when it came time for the plumber to replace the water heater, and he turned off the power, in the days before there was a mandated disconnect right by the water heater tank, there would be a little bit of fun as either the live arced over to the water pipes, blowing the pole fuse, or the entire house floated up to mains voltage.
      Just had a meter replaced in the block, and the new prepayment meter now has it's own GPRS unit in it, which has a small antenna to provide a link to the metro, giving a power status message and also live power use, and they also have bypass detection in the meter itself.

I will be stopping my energy and doing without , if everyone did this the companies would have no income unfortunately parts of UK are cold and now they are stopping wood stoves it does seem they are up to something , Scotland can have enough electricity at 3.5p but it's taken to England and sold back at a dearer price , so yes it is a con and affecting sick and elderly the most , ah well that's the great British for you I guess ,

      @Cyberbyte_010 Год назад +15

      That's a bit of a red herring. True, that's one reason, but the more over encompassing reason is smart meters offer more control by DNOs over the electrical system. For the right reasons, like meter tampering, but also for the wrong reasons, like giving an earful to electricians when they have no choice but to pull the main fuse and the meter yells to the DNOs, or the recent story bout British Gas. After the investigation of British Gas breaking into ppls homes to fit smart and prepaid meters, and for those who already have smart meters, have the meter switch modes remotely, even after the practice was discontinued, I suspect more ppl will take a stand on not having a smart meter in place, and stick with the old style meters for as long as they can.

      If anything i think smart meters are more of a reason for tampering because people are really REALLY distrusting of always online meters constantly communicating their consumption and people are seriously afraid that these are gonna be used to limit their carbon footprint at some point later down the line, so i actually think it's an INCENTIVE to tampering, not a deterrent, i don't actually understand what was wrong with the old system, it worked fine, just as well as this.
      is it just so the DNO can save a couple quid on sending over meter men every once in a while? Or is something more nefarious at play? I also don't really like this idea that they can monitor my consumption and just switch off my electricity if they wish remotely if i go over some arbitrary limit they've set for the month, just don't get why they need such power

    Constructive dismissal is when you have no choice but to leave an employment. The Employer can effectively be held responsible for causing a person to leave.
    By the same mechanisms: is the son responsible for his mothers death, or did he feel - as a result of government policy and profiteering energy companies - he had no choice but to take action so his mother didn't freeze to death?
    The son is likely to be the one in court over this, but responsibility for this tragic event also lays with many others who will likely never face repercussions.

      It's very hard to prove in court though, which is the point of doing it: It lets employers get rid of someone without needing to deal with formal processes or severance pay. Just have to make them miserable enough to quit. Or fabricate a reason - perhaps dump all of the most time-consuming tickets on them so that they cannot possibly achieve mandatory performance targets.

      @@efixx I love shelly too. Especially their lightbulbs (that you just screw in) and their low-voltage things (RGBW2, Shelly1, I4DC) which can also be run on 12v DC. The good with 12v things is that there is a exception in our law that says low voltage installations (SELV) may be done without being a authorized electrician. So just put a plug-in transformer in nearest socket, a barrel jack in a SELV junction box, and then you can do big lighting installations, without any authorization.

    I wouldn't ever tamper with my meter (Not only because it's dangerous and wrong, but I get nervous enough just working with 3,5v Li-Ion batteries!) so as a vulnerable person my options have boiled down to cutting my energy consumption down to the lowest I can get away with. In short (Ooops! ⚡🙃) this means I'm now living on about 550wh/day. The standing charge, incidentally, is so high on my tariff (Because I can't have a „smart“ meter) that I'm being billed £2,85 in standing charges for every £1,- of electricity I consume... ⚡🇬🇧🤔
    Now take into account that I live in an 80s vintage all-electric flat that receives no direct sunlight and gets abnormally cold in the winter, and I think it becomes quite apparent just what sort of appliances I'm having to avoid using just to keep my head above water... 💸⚠😣
    *Edit:* Also, just noticed the thumbnail image for this video might give a bit too much detail given it's visible to those outside the trade like myself as well. Might want to drop the screws and come up with something a little less revealing, IMO. 😇

    Regarding the energy companies and profits; I think (hope) they may be trying to build up the coffers to upgrade the infrastructure to enable all this EV nonsense to happen without the lights going out for the poorest while the richest go swanning around in their EVs. That is assuming the EV rollout -fantasy- continues.
    One of the major problems is that so many things rely upon electricity and far too many things need batteries. So the LEDs in LED lighting use less energy. So what? When there are now far more lights than there used to be and of much higher power which is particularly the case with outdoor lighting and completely negates and energy saving and now we have an even larger problem with light pollution and sky glow than we ever had before.
    With all the advances in technology and its efficiency it would be logical to assume less energy is being consumed, yet in reality much more energy is consumed. The proliferation of 'small' energy consuming devices is ridiculous! One particular offender is the power outlet with the built-in USB charging sockets. There is usually no information as to the power consumption or efficiency. The worst aspect is that this functionality cannot be switched off. Also, what happens when they invariably fail? It's part of the socket so it can't be simply unplugged and sent to electronics recycling, so it just gets ignored and forgotten about and left to consume more energy. Such faceplates should, at the very least, have a middle switch that switches off the mains supply to the charging circuitry and an internal means of isolation. I appreciate that it's a small amount of power, but when multiplied by the numbers of these sockets installed it becomes a significantly larger amount of waste energy. It would also be useful to be able to isolate/disable the USB side if, for example, the socket is install in a public building and it becomes desirable that 'unauthorised' people start plugging things in.
    Here's a thought What about faceplates with 'fish key'/security switches? Slot(s) in the faceplate that override external switches to easily disable a socket from casual use or electricity theft?
    As an example of 'hidden' energy waste, take cordless power tools. The charger takes energy to run itself before it even starts to charge a battery, and if left powered like so many convenience devices takes energy all the time. The charger is not 100% efficient when charging the battery, so that's more wasted energy. The battery loses energy all the time whether it is used or not. The tool itself isn't 100% efficient either so that's yet more wasted energy, and that's just one device. How about an ultra-efficient mains electric drill? That would actually use less energy for doing the same or more work.
    But what about where there's no mains power available? An inverter power bank would solve that issue. Yes, I know it is back to a battery. The difference is that this would be ONE battery that could run ANY of the power tools. One battery to maintain instead of dozens that are of different types. But we're back mains voltages...it's an isolated supply and could easily have sensitive electronic safety and management electronics making it far safer in use and in storage than current solutions.
    Just a few thoughts I've had...

    You encourage people to shop in their fellow citizens, informants destroy people lives. These people doing this are desperate, how about helping them instead of criminalising them. If you are an electrician and come across a poor family that bypassed the meter, instead of phoning the number, fix the problem and maybe have a heart and put £100 on the meter for them.

    • @efixx
      @efixx  Год назад

      It's not about shopping people it's about making sure people don't cause problems that lead to deaths as happened to the lady in the news story. I'll bet the poor lad who was responsible for his mother's death wishes he'd never done it or it had been fixed before she died. Of course people are desperate but stealing and causing unsafe situations is not the answer.

    So charging extremely expensive KW/h prices (may be the most expensive in the world) is legal but by passing that is illegal. One should always look objectively. If you find your citizens trying by pass meters may be you should look at the mirror as government and energy supliers WHY THIS IS HAPPENING? Ofcourse energy companies should make profits but in what volume? in UK since pandemic, oil, gas, and electric suppliers become the top profiting companies. Deadly measures ? People aint as stupid as you think they are, they will pay for electricians to do that kind of work. As well as i love some of your content, i absulutle hate you push Smart Meters and this kind of things like in this video, i bet electric companies paying you good money for these contents.
