I don't print a lot. So when I tried to use my inkjet after sitting idle for a month, I got the "missing printhead" warning. And a replacement print head is not available. Even though it was a $350 machine, about three years old. So I pulled an old Oki laser printer out of storage where it had sat for almost ten years. Replaced a toner cartridge, and started printing. I had a little trouble finding a driver for a machine I bought in 2007, but it's still printing.
I finally bit the bullet and got a colour laser. My only regret is not doing it sooner, but it's only in the last couple of years that high-capacity cartridge machines are at a reasonable price. The reliability is fantastic - no clogs, very few jams, high quality at high speed, long life toner and no mechanical failures of the paper feed mechanism after a few weeks in service...
@@printershowcase yeah it's a treadmill of broken parts. I finally had enough when a high end Epson failed after a few weeks due to the feed rollers somehow becoming disattached. Inkjets are only good for photos on photo paper, best with 6+ ink rather than 4 Epson have a lot of professional photo printers but I don't need to print photos. The colour laser can do a reasonable job of the few photos I need to print. I just wish I could afford an A3 colour laser though! Those babies are expensive as well as heavy.
This video is a big money saver for many households. I've bought colour laser printer as a Christmas present for a relative so they stop being ripped off for ink.
So are the materials printed from laser waterproof? I want to print line drawings onto watercolor paper then watercolor on them, will this work with a laser printer?
roxyfur The actual printing is waterproof so it would work... as long as your watercolor paper can feed through the laser printer. Also the printed lines would be visible in your final product.
Laser printing is waterproof but you will need to research waterproof media you can print onto as well as some type of UV protection if you want them to last.

When printing, laser or ink.... Does photos become better if you make the printer print slow vs. fast? When it's taking it's time, does it yield a better result?
Aha. Thanks man. It's a setting in my printer that I can uncheck, which says print at high speed. It's always on. Was wondering if I unchecked that if it would yield a better result. I guess printers adjust to the task anyway.
This is a little confusing. You say for good four colour printing ink jet printers should be preferred. But when I print a pic in my Epson ink jet at home it never comes as good as the laser print out at the stationery shop. Am I missing something here?
Anil, you miss heard because we never say that. What we say is that if you need MORE than four color printing (as in 6-12 colors), you must use an inkjet. Obviously a four color inkjet is not going to be better than a four color laser printer but an eight color inkjet is a true photo printer.
I have a b&w laser printer and a color inkjet printer... unfortunately I need to keep the inkjet printer, because it has a built in scanner. Otherwise I can't use it anymore... the tanks are full, but the ink won't come out. (even after cleaning the heads) The laser printer however keeps printing and printing. Even after it gathered dust for 3 months, I clean it up, connect it and ready to go!
There are some that will but they are all larger format printers over $2500 (see link below:) www.printershowcase.com/11x17-Color-Laser-Printers-2500.aspx None of the smaller desk-top models support media that heavy. Most max out at 80 lb cover stock.
Problem I have had with inkjet is if you don't constantly print stuff it seems to have problems like blurred text which I have experienced on 2 different printers. I don't do photos so I am buying a laser.
I found that photo printing is awful on a laser where the flesh tones are too red but a $25,000 laser printer can print as good as an inkjet. Must be the gamut engine or something. I rarely cared about printing a photograph for I found it better to leave the photo on your cellphone and share it electronically or go to a printshop for selected prints. I like the graphics and illustration print quality of a laser.
It will vary greatly from one laser printer to another and there are color profiles and adjustments you can make. I've seen great looking flesh tones from laser printers that are as good or better than four color inkjets especially on plain paper. Having said that I agree that it's probably not a great idea to be printing your own photos. It's time consuming and expensive. Unless you're a pro photographer you're better off using a photo printing service.
@@printershowcase My work has a professional grade color laser which is very expensive and it can print excellent photographs. I don't think any consumer grade laser can make it happen.

It varies depending on the engine. Usually around 400 degrees C

how about the concern over laser printer emissions? any info to share?
Minimal ozone emissions during printing (which are mostly filtered out). It has not been an issue as people originally feared... 30+ years ago
Excellent job breaking it down so quick! Best information I've seen so far!
Glad it was helpful! Everything in this video is still true today.
Do I need a license for the laser?
Can you use a long usb cable with laser printers?
Laser printers communicate the same as other printers. Typically you can go 15' with USB. Ethernet is faster and goes much further!
Thanks for quick reply. I have hp cp5225n. I dont think i can use ethernet cable to computer
You go from the printer to your router or switch with Ethernet cable
Came for the Printer knowledge, stayed for the awesome jams!!! 🤘🤘🤘
Rock and roll!
No pun intended.
Can lasers print on transparency sheet? You know the clear plastic ones? Or will the plastic melt?
Yes, there are transparencies made for lasers. Just make sure they are intended for use in laser printers or copiers .
Great video to watch for someone who just bought an inkjet printer.
Very good video! What brands are good & cheap laser printers for using at home? Thanks!
is laser printer any good for greeting cards?
If you can find paper that you AND your laser printer find acceptable.

I print very rarely. Can a laser printer go months without use. I ask because a dried up inkjet cartridge is much less expensive to replace.
Yes is your answer. Toner is already dry. It's even less expensive when you replace nothing.
At last, someone explained it clearly.

The higher res printers will handle grey scale better.

Nope. 4-color is it for lasers (there is an OKI that will print white but that is more for printing on colored paper)
Problem I have had with inkjet is if you don't constantly print stuff it seems to have problems like blurred text which I have experienced on 2 different printers. I don't do photos so I am buying a laser.
