I used Evernote and yes to your point was getting bloated. I have been using Notability which was great for PDF’s and the pencil support in my opinion is awesome. I used Microsoft One Note as my employers choice and it is the same to sync with access anywhere. But recently I started using Apple notes and this app is so underrated with the simplicity being its great feature. From making lists to having the completed task being automatically checked off to making excel type notes. The more I use it the more I use the other two programs.
      Great video as well.

Until this video I did not even know that there were other note apps! :-)
My preferred tool for notes is a 2017 Ipad Pro with the Pencil. It's so easy to share ideas and scripts with your co-workers!

I used to use Evernote, but I’m an Office 365 subscriber and figured, why pay for Evernote when OneNote is available as part of the Office subscription? I don’t consider Apple Notes because I’m also a Windows and Chrome OS user.

Hi Mark thanks for this. Apple is not just amazing, it’s free, and it’s right there. My only concern is about exporting and backing up notes outside of the app. I am talking about archiving and such - something that I personally find to be necessary, all the more so when the number of notes gets unwieldy. As far as I know Apple doesn’t have a solution for this, right now there is no way to back up notes other than exporting one note at a time to PDF. Any advice, suggestions , ideas?

After much trial and error, Apple notes is my favorite note-taking app.
As a Windows PC user with an iPhone, I was on a mission to find a notetaking app that would sync between my devices. First, I chose Google Keep and it did the job. However, I realized that I take 80% of my notes on my iPhone, and Apple notes seemed much faster than Google Keep on the iPhone. Once I found out you can use Apple Notes from a Windows PC using the web, I made the switch. Using Apple Notes from the web is not that bad and it is well worth the simplicity, features, and speed if you primarily take your notes on an Apple device.
    Thank you for sharing!

I used Notes when I first came into contact with Apple. After a two-year break, I came back and I am rediscovering what a great tool it is. It's the full sync with other Apple devices that makes everything go everywhere. I also use shared notes, where my wife can complete my shopping list on an ongoing basis. I am very happy with Notes, this is an app without which I cannot imagine my life ;)

I know I am a bit late to this post but wanted to echo what others have said and Mark's reasons for moving to Apple Notes. I too was a Premium Evernote user but found that I wasn't using all of the features that I was paying for and I was extremely frustrated with the UI. Apple Notes is free on all of my devices, provides the simple UI needed for notes, and I wasn't missing anything from Evernote. Add to it the privacy concerns and it was a no brainer to switch. Keep up the good work, Mark!

I also started with Evernote and at first it was awesome, I loved how powerful it was when I first started using it and I was diligent about being organized, creating well-formed notes, etc. It just didn't work for me though for the same reasons as you stated - I'm an "in the moment" note taker and don't want to have to deal with hefty apps, or sync issues, etc.
I thought Apple's Notes app would be too limiting, but in the end I'm a chaotic note taker. I take notes in the moment and I'm pretty terrible about organization, Apple Notes allows me to control the chaos to some degree and still actually be able to find my notes! The Quick Notes app on iPad is also fantastic!

I couldn’t agree more. I was trying to love Evernote and even make it work for me, but months later and wanting to geek out on all the features, ultimately I realized that it was too much for me. I transferred all my notes into Apple Notes (not the easiest to do, but 50 at a time), and cancelled my Evernote subscription this week. I’m really excited to see what the upgraded version has when it launches but I realized I can get everything I want done with Apple Notes.

NO Robbie I do not think so ! I got so fed up with their bulk transfer thing, ended up laboriously copy pasting hundreds of Evernote records into Notes. Customer ‘service’ was worthless. But patiently ported over years of Evernote records over time. When all done, I felt transcendent. Just looked at their website again. Gawwwwwd what I left behind. So many restrictions and fee levels. What irked me most was hitting record size limits quickly (adding photos, you can imagine how often error messages pile up)

    • @brynalan
      @brynalan Год назад

Dang just realized I’ve saved $8 month by jumping ship and going to Notes. Looking again at their site, the plan levels and restrictions are almost comical. What was especially infuriating was per record storage limitations on Evernote. Add photos and you quickly overshoot storage (unless you upgrade!). Apple Notes I never think twice about adding one photo or ten, it’s irrelevant. What finally sold me on notes was the main reason I jumped into Evernote in the first place - the ability to create not just folders but subfolders. Jeeeesh I’m so glad I escaped that morass.

Yep !! I got rid of Evernote in a hurry once I understood the brilliance of Notes. And got soooo tired of the constant suggestions to send more more money. Took forever to copy paste each Evernote note over to Notes ( the bulk transfer function was miserably inept. Surprise! They don’t want to facilitate your departure). Once the process was done, I went to a local cheers bar to celebrate. This video is a brilliantly thorough summary of all that is. I struggled with everything he mentions in trying to find an Evernote alternative.

I've used Evernote for over a decade, and wouldn't switch to Apple Notes simply because it doesn't serve my needs. I keep notes forever, refer back to them, and share some notes/notebooks publicly. For example, I publish my astronomical observations - Astronomy Observing Log - can't do that with Apple Notes or most other note-taking apps/services! Evernote is worth the cost for me...but I appreciate where you're coming from with simple, short-term notes.

I use Apple Notes on daily basis, have been for more than 8 years. Do use dictation. Rarely use drawing. Like that I can add photo to a note. Like the folder and “pin” features. Do use “lock” of a note for some. I would say I am 95% satisfied with the app. Simplicity is one thing that attracts me, and it is free! No adverts. It just works, and across all my Apple devices, no hassle.
I don’t like the printing aspect though - lacks flexibility to produce a document to my requirement (font size, margins). So if I want to print something, I generally either put up with the format that comes out or find another platform.

I use Notes also. Like you, simple is for me and Notes simple. I have tried Evernote, Bear, OneNote, etc., and I keep coming back Notes. I value privacy. Apple talks about privacy and stands behind it. I trust everything I store on iCloud. You mentioned 3rd party apps and I heard something that sounded like an email app which brings up an interesting question. What email service do you use and why? I've used Google for years and feel uneasy. It is hard to quit Google because of everything that email address is tied to but I think it is time. I'd love to see you do a video about email.

I use only a fraction of the functionality of Evernote and recently decided to jump ship and adopt Notes for many of the reasons you share. Exporting from Evernote to Notes is silly easy however I was stopped mid migration when I couldn’t find a way to link one note to another note within Apple Notes. I’ve heard it should be easy as of IOS 15 but it continues to elude me. Even SR support at Apple fail to tell me how to do it. So, for now I am using both Notes and Evernote.

I have spent more than I care to remember on apps that have quite frankly turned out to be to full of themselves and not full of use for the user. Being a very green writer I tend to have more 'IN WORK' ideas than 'COMPLETED' ideas. They used to be spread everywhere, not now, they sync with everything. I no longer have the excuse of missing that key idea I wrote on the back of a Tesco till receipt. Good article well done, sometimes the right choice is there all the time in front of us, it just needs to be seen.

I was ultimately only in it for the multi-device synchronisation. I'm now looking at ways to import and organise my notes in Apple Notes now instead of being all over the shop (we sound very similar in that regard), so thanks for the useful review! Agreed on the Evernote thing and the sync issues thing, too. Wrote 1500-2000 words on my iPad for a story in Evernote cause I’d used it for 10-15 years and it worked well between devices. But there was a sync error and there was no way for the iPad version to alert me of that. So a day later when I opened it on my phone, that version automatically updated as the “current” version. I haven’t used Evernote since.

Just made the switch from Evernote to Notes after years. Notes has grown up to good enough, and Evernote keeps bombarding you with upgrades (both the app and what you should add). Evernote had some formatting oddities. Plus, although I haven't completely tested this: with Evernote you have to take action to make sure you have your notes offline, whereas I'm told Notes has a complete copy on the iPhone. I however wished I'd waited the next macOS and iOS upgrades since they support tags. Not sure they would have exported anyway. I was only lightly using Tags which was the only feature I was aware I was giving up.

Hi Mark, great video! Can you help me? When I import a PDF into Apple notes on my iPad, then write notes on the PDF - I can't see the notes in my PDF when I open PDF in the Notes App on my iPhone and Mac!i.e I can see the PDF clearly but no written notes on the PDF??? Am I doing something wrong, or is there a setting I'm missing?
    Thanks

Excellent video. If I had scripted my reasons for moving from Evernote to Apple Notes 6 months ago, I would have said the same. Good to mention that it’s quite easy to export notes from Evernote and transition to Apple notes really easily. I haven’t looked back.

I use Notes a my main note taking app for 2 years now, after using Evernote for work and and notes for personal things.
It does a perfect job, especially thanks to the latest updates.
    The Cons:
Note handling coding languages (I like to keep some SQL, or to take notes from my bootcamp. Not possible).
Also not easy to link notes between them
In case of mistake on the iPhone (erasing content of a note), no CTRL+Z button (very scary if you do the wrong action)
Tables are not well integrated. Especially coming from other tools like Excel or Google sheet. I would love a proper copy paste of spreadsheet

This was great Mark. I can truely relate to your sentiments on third party apps. I have tried so many and still have such a mixture it’s starting make things tricky for me. I find myself always going back to Apple’s suite of apps, which of course are sweet! I have a paid subscription to Evernote and have stopped using this. If I could find a simple way of exporting all my docs from it I would cancel my subscription but it holds most of my docs that I’ve saved for tax purposes so will probably keep my subscription for another fiver years even though I don’t use the app.

For me Apple Notes is all I need. I love the cross platform and easy way it works. I like that the have now add ed Bullet Marks and Tasks to check. Though I do use Reminders for a lot of that, but I write as a hobby and it's great to set up using Bullet and Tasks all in the same place I like to write.

    Hi Mark.
Nice video and well presented. I do find myself using multiple locations for notes! I use Stickies on my iMac, I add notes to Gmail contacts, and Gmail diary events reminders and tasks. And, of course, I use Apple Notes. I agree with all that you say, but I would really like Notes to incorporate a reminder/alarm facility. I find that if I create a todo list in Notes, it's too easy to forget an item.
Otherwise it is good and simple to use.

Apple Notes is my central filing system. I collect all sorts of information for customers there. You can write, type, dictate, collect photos and scans and links all in one file and then access the information easily on all your Apple devices. It’s as small as a quick thought or as large as you need it to be. I do like Notability, Colla Note and Noteful for written notes. I also use a Remarkable tablet for note taking. However copies of all those notes eventually get collected in Apple Notes.

My use case is big projects though where I go back and edit notes. Eventually it looks like a complete report. One of the most useful things about Evernote are note links. I can reference another note through my current note and have instant access to it.
Another thing is web clipper. I think I have save a page to Apple notes but the Evernote web clipper is better to me. Especially for simplified versions of the page where I mainly only need the text

Evernote has some things I like but I am with so many on here that note (pun intended) the bloat creep. what you just described is a great idea for using both. I think that "Notability" is the greatest piece of software in the known universe for note taking on an iPad with Apple Pencil. It has a simplicity, and a very cool feature of synching audio recording with what you are writing at that very second, and it can audio record long lectures in tiny file sizes.
