  • Niall Ferguson is a renowned historian, Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and prolific author of more than a dozen best-selling works on economics, culture, and politics. His newest book, "Doom: The Politics of Catastrophe,” examines how our leaders and societies have dealt with disasters, including pandemics, and how we must learn from the past to better manage future crises.
In this episode, Ferguson explains why the rise and fall of civilizations do not fit into predictable patterns and cycles. He does not see American decline as inevitable and holds out that America’s best days may yet be ahead -- if it can stay on the right path. Ferguson also pulls back the curtain on the Chinese Communist Party, revealing the ways in which the CCP's strengths are exaggerated and why the United States’ support for smart policy and innovation will bolster its dominance in the years ahead.

Lonsdale should talk less and listen more. Ferguson is a genius and has the wherewithal to tell the world how it should do civilization.

Agreed about the interruptions. I generally enjoy listening to Ferguson, as he's articulate and well-read. It sometimes takes him a while to complete a point but it's usually worth listening 'til the end.

Great interview. Interesting discussion re reform of the administrative state. This is absolutely critical to a Western consolidation in the face of the dynamism and energy inherent in the challenge from China. 35-50% of western GDP is chewed up, wasted or redistributed by the state. We must live up to the great achievements of our ancestors to reboot our productive and creative capacities!

If we want to improve things in the United States we need to reduce our reliance on income taxes by raising taxes on alcohol. We need to change State Statutes and Federal Obamacare law to allow discounts on premiums for sobers adults. We need to implement the NTSB recommendation of 2009 and lower the blood alcohol content to .05 from .08. Utah did this and had a 45% reduction in alcohol crashes and a 18% reduction in alcohol crash fatalities.

Beloved remember utterance has a true foundation and an Aim before thy utterance LEAVES thy mouths beloved. Likewise with sincere conversations with God and to thyself and to one another sincere answers will be given indeed. Indeed availeth much. Specially before moving forward asked thy intent, thy based, thy foundation, and where thy hearts will be also beloved. Used these 2. 1st. Love God as a CHILDS 2nd. Love thy neighbors as thyself beloved. Truth and peace reunite

Contact tracing can be done in democratic societies too if you can just ignore the privacy issue that being concerned. For Taiwan, pits a Chinese democratic society that somehow the oriental ppl has more or less submissive genes,?so you can do it in a society that majority of ppl are Chinese but n the western societies, the privacy concern and the respect to privacy was something they didn’t go this way to handle the pandemic!!
