Embarrassing 80's - Royal It's a Knockout

  • It's a Royal Knockout was a one-off charity event which was shown on British television on 19 June 1987. It followed the format of It's a Knockout (the British version of Jeux Sans Frontieres), a slapstick TV gameshow which was broadcast in the UK until 1982.
    The event was staged on the lakeside lawn of the Alton Towers stately home-cum-theme park. However, the event used its own specially created immersing set, meaning that the location was not very recognisable in the TV broadcast.
    Although regarded as a failure, a similar show (without royal involvement) was made the following year at Walt Disney World in Florida, featuring teams of celebrities representing the United Kingdom, USA, and Australia.

    The equivalent of your Dad getting up at a wedding reception and asking for Ice Ice Baby so he can show off the moves and strut he thought he had 30 years ago (but never had then).
    I remember watching It's A Knockout when I was 9 and thinking "I'm a bit too old for this." Fortunately for Eddie, he behaved like a 5 year old, so it was just his thing.
    "Bloody prima donna" summed up the event organiser perfectly.

      Jane Doe there mum raised them well and made them more down to earth and exposed to the real world. She saw how strange the other royals were. Edward was raised in palaces with weird courtiers behaving like a time passed. So, yeah he would be up himself and completely unaware that ‘commoners’ don’t actually give a toss about him.

    I know they did it for charity but it seems that charity was very far from their minds and only used it to justify getting celebrities to agree. Clearly from the interview, prince Edward only cared about his ego and whether people liked it, not how much it raised awareness and money, or the people who will benefit. I find it demeaning actually that these millionaires cant just donate the money on their own and would use important causes to boost themselves

They act like a normal person ( WHO'S GOOFY ) when they are at home but why can't they make funny faces and dance a little like we do with our friends when we are out in public? I saw Queen Elizabeth's viewing and I don't like how her family were supposed to walk in a certain way and stand looking away from her casket and looking down. I mean they were going to be looking down and away anyway but still. Are you kidding me? That is your family. Not your bodyguards. That was supposed to be a ceremony. Not a show.

    Apart from the contretemps between Prince Edward and the press, I thought it looked like a lot of fun--a sort of Christmas pantomime edition of the Royal Family. I can see why the Queen and Charles wouldn't participate (though if the Queen had really wanted it stopped, I expect it would have been), but for the junior royals, why not? It was certainly a brighter moment than the decade of scandal and tragedy that followed. Could it have been better production-wise? Probably; but if they'd tried it again it might have gone more smoothly.

    • @Talisguy
      @Talisguy Год назад +2

      It was Edward.
      Diana's popularity shows that it wasn't that the public didn't want the royals to be human. It was that Edward torched any goodwill the special may have gotten by snapping at the press (who had been confined to a hot tent for the entire special, hadn't been fed and hadn't been able to see the event very well) for not falling over themselves to congratulate him for his hard work. If he hadn't done that, then the special probably would have been remembered much more fondly.
