WILD CAMPING THE GREAT GLEN WAY | Part 1 Fort William - Invermoriston

- I had been looking forward to wild camping the Great Glen way ever since I Wild camped the west Highland way last august. Firstly, because Scotland is incredibly beautiful, and secondly, because it is legal to wild camp in Scotland. This makes a lot of difference as you do not have the pressure of setting up late and packing down quite so early as you do when you are wild camp in England. I knew the route would be fairly easy compared to the Cleveland way and the Cumbria way - The other two long distance hiking routes I had wild camped already this year, but I had heard the high route options offered some incredible scenery and the trail itself was fun to do.
I caught the Caledonian sleeper train from London Euston to Fort William and stayed overnight in the Glen Nevis campsite which is located right at the foot of Ben Nevis! I was joined by two friends, Jordan and Charlotte. I had known Jordan for years and it would be his first time wild camping UK, his first ever visit to scotland and his first uk long distance path so it was very exciting. I had met Charlotte whilst wild camping the Cumbria Way, she had already been in Scotland hiking the West Highland Way and finished the trail the day before we set off to start the Great Glen Way.
The trail is around 75 miles long, though each different website I look on states a different number of total miles so that is a rough idea. Part 1 shows our journey from Fort William to Invermoriston with all the ups and downs and funny moments along the way. I really hope you enjoy watching part 1 of my adventure hiking The Great Glen Way, I have tried my best to include some information you might find useful such as all the various wild camping spots and trail blazer campsites along the way, how to get hold of a canal key which gives you access to the facilities and where you can stop for a cheeky pint!

Oh my god, you pretty much stopped exactly where we did each day. So so nice to see it all over again, it really is a beautiful walk, especially if the weather is playing ball. My mates bladder burst just as we set off to do this hike too, am glad it did not dampen Jordans spirits. I don't think it matter how many snacks get packed they always run out. An amazing trip so far I can't wait to see what happens in part 2.

Sleeper train to Fort Willian sounds brilliant, we got the train there from Glasgow and it was a superb train journey. I camped in Glen Nevis camp site in 1998 with my 2 lads before we climbed Ben Nevis. Jordon was through in the deep end mind and that bad weather would have bothered me (fair-weather hiker) but good to see it did not dampen your enthusiasm. Respect for the old water swimming, I bet that was bloody baltic but worth it to feel invigorated. Shame about Charlotte but what a trooper she was, especially as she had just completing the WHW, real hard core. What a difference the sun made, real good that it came out for you and we went to Fort Augustus, a real nice place. You took the high road but I bet you were pleased you did, the views were amazing! Funny enough I ended up doing the WHW in two attempts due to bad weather too and when I got over the hill at Bridge of Orchy I wild camped at (so it looks) the exact same spot as you, at the bridge just down the road from the hotel.

@@DrunkOnWanderlust 9 days in a 16 foot canoe, scenery is amazing, we stopped at the same sites - but only went to Fort Augusta and paddled back as car was at Neptune car park. I have done end 2 end before, loch Ness is awesome we wild camped just past Urquhart castle on the left side - but the trailblazers are on the right hand side. stunning views and picture.. i dont have a YT page so cant share photos. Will catch up on Part 2

We was actually staying there in our Motorhome ready to do the NC500….. but we had just hiked in Cumbria and did scarfell pike. Although I am tempted to do The Great Glen Way now I have seen the route….. I have a big hike planned this year in July though so looking forward to that x enjoying your journey’s.
Crikey that’s where we camped gair Lochs, Lagan Lochs, trailblazer half way done and a little wooded site fantastic
Yeah the trailblazer sites on the first half are really handy, although we found some simply gorgeous wild camping forest spots in the second half too x I’m just planning my next trail now… I’m off to wales in a few weeks to do the snowdonia way mountain route … it will be my hardest challenge yet 🙈

Must have just missed you. I was at Maccies in FW on Monday last week, on our NC500 road trip. We were armed with Avon skin so soft and a midge net but was so lucky we didn't encounter 1 of the little f&£kers all week.
