Theme is Maynard Ferguson's rendition of "Theme from Shaft" off his 1972 album M.F. Horn Two -- the same album also has "Give It One," which Griffin used on the Wheel pilots in 1974.
So much going on here: 1. The theme resembles "Shaft" 2. The old "Wheel" timer sound 3. I won't give it away but one of the models resurfaced on another famous game show 2 years later 3. Pat Harrington was quite good on this 4. The Carruthers Company also produced "Second Chance" which have birth to "Press Your Luck" 5. Game itself is pretty entertaining.
3. I assume you're not talking about Jane Nelson, she appeared on several shows including Dealer's Choice, The new Treasure Hunt and The Diamond Head Game.
2 things I noticed about this unsold game show were: That 10-second time/decision music would later be used as a cue for the bonus round on WOF when it was introduced in December 1981! Also look at the big cordless mic 🎤 Mr. Harrington's using for the end game only!
Absolutely beautiful white jacket with matching boots.💖🥳 The 1920's - 1970's had such fun and cute feminine clothing. Nowadays it's so difficult to fine nice clothing, I guess you have to sew it yourself or custom order, boots and shoes.
Hey Wink! I saw the Disney movie "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes". Pat Harrington made an appearance in that movie as the moderator of the "College Knowledge" program in the film.
Nearly 5 years before, Harrington played the Game Show moderator which Kurt Russell's University Team would compete with rival University Team in Disney's The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes.
Thank you, Wink! What a fascinating show! Pat seemed a little nervous, but he worked well with the contestants! Wonder if Goodson/Todman would’ve been upset by the “Next item up for auction” line? (Maybe Johnny Olson!) Have a blessed Thanksgiving and holiday season everyone! 🙏
1. The end game was like a cross between the old Do-It-Yourself Showcase and Shopping Spree, both from TPIR. 2. What if they got someone with super math & memory skills as a contestant? They’d be able to keep a mental tab on how much the other teams have in their respective budgets, as well as average price for the remaining prizes, and an exact price for the last prize (as the total for all 7 prizes, which was revealed at the beginning, was equal to each couple’s budget)
Not to mention hubbie can show wifey on the sly using his fingers (flash-style) how much he 'banked' in their little ''pod'. I could see many opportunities for 'cheating' and unfair play like being 'backed into a corner' by Pat.
That's a major flaw you pointed out. I wouldn't give out the budgets to the other contestants. A smart mathematician would only have a general idea instead of the exact amount their opponents can play with.
I think the trick was, whatever you committed to one round did NOT go back into the pool, even if you lost or didn't spend it. Also, no bonuses for a "perfect bid," so no way you could get more cash.
They'd probably have some kind of math and memory test, and then they'd cast the people who didn't score 100%. They'd look in the middle of the curve for average contestants, because a really smart contestants (like the ones you're describing) would bankrupt them.
This was a pretty solid concept. It would have given The Price is Right a run for its money (pun intended). Anyone know why NBC (and maybe ABC) passed on it?
And aired on NBC too, most likely. For many years, Radio Corporation of America (RCA) was NBC's parent company. The first prize package was four RCA TVs :)
From this, Pat Harrington might have been a natural for “Let’s Make a Deal”. BTW, not only was he Schneider from “One Day at a Time”, but he also voiced “The Inspector” in the DePatie/Freleng “Pink Panther” cartoon series. “Don’t say ‘Sí’, say “Oui’!”
The awkward exchanges with the contestants shows Harrington wasn't the right fit as a game show host but some tinkering with the rules may give the game some potential. Add: Okay, here is my fix: round all the retail prices to nearest multiple of 25. All prices would end in 00, 25, 50, or 75. It wouldn't make sense to upbid less than $25. This would speed up the auction. Also, enforce a time limit between bid. The players are going to lose their budgets anyway so you might as well speed up the process.
Ah yeah, this was back in the era where the men are asked what they do for a living, while the women just sit there and smile. I guess that kind of fits with the theme of the show. Interesting times.
Yeah, I kind of expected Pat to come back around to the teams after the first break and talk with the wives. But yeah, it was the 70s. I think I'd fall out of my chair today if I was watching Wheel of Fortune and a woman said she was a homemaker. Stay-at-home parents are still a thing, both men and women, and I say more power to couples that can make that work, especially when the children are young. I find it surprising when anyone says they don't work, we just expected the women stayed home and raised children 50 years ago. What a world.
It's pretty close to being able to go. I would make a few changes, and this show would work well. 1. I like the partners, but they should also know their balance between the rounds. See my next point. 2. They should do rounds one partner bids and then the other bids, and they both can bid on the last item. I like the aspect of the one hand not knowing the other though. That's interesting because it's a great concept. 3. There should be crowds shouting like on TPIR. If you have the crowd yelling go or stop whatever that makes it a bit more fun. The audience could really make this more exciting. 4. Hitting the price should also be a bonus of some sort. Either they get the item as a freebie and they get back the value of that prize to their balance. They could also get a bonus item that doesn't count to their total and they can keep if they don't win. They could also just get to keep the item they bid on and got right no matter what. 5. I really like the idea that you get eliminated at the overbid. So as long as you know you haven't heard the horn then keep going. The host should also know to call the minimum raise as they get closer because they have the value. So if the bid is $676 and the item is $688 then they could set the minimum raise to $5 etc. You get the idea. I also dig the fact he also called out for certain bids you never know if they are screwing with you. He has the value, and if he knows it's 1404 and he says I want to hear 1420. Its like zonk the host controls. However, that should stop once you have the first team out. I like the endgame, and the partner having the ability to change one item. Knowing this is a pilot and that has it's limits. If this had gone to broadcast they should have paraded each thing out in the sets if they could
Except Bill never asked for specific numbers, just for contestants to maintain minimum bid increases. And yes, notice how they were so careful not to say "the next item up for bids".
I know this is 1974, but when Harrington was interviewing the contestants. He only asked the males what they did and not the women. It’s an interesting concept. But it probably didn’t work because it was a bit too technical.
You should get 1M subs. You find so much obscure game shows that could’ve made the cut, but didn’t anyways. And some people could have understood but confused anyways. Could you maybe upload a Brainsurge lost episode if you can? It would really mean a lot to me and a lot of the others in the community of the show! Thank you, love your videos!
The card in the beginning said October, 1974. So, it might've been considered to air in late '74 or early '75. I don't know what network, but it looks like it was for either ABC or NBC, seeing as it has that Price is Right feel.
At about 32 minutes, was this intended to fill more than a half hour, or did game play need to be trimmed down to fit into a 30-minute window if it had sold? People praise Pat. He was OK, but not great. I wouldn't praise his hosting. Kinda fun concept, but I'd find it rather repetitive and dull on a daily basis.
The set design (cheap - look at the clear tape bubbles where the names are) and lighting is awful in this (lots of shadows,, and color choices are not the best). Real weird layout, too. However, Andy steals the show, of course. BTW That refrigerator 'water' looked light brown like Scotch :-)
This is literally The Price Is Right. They might as well have brought out the Big Wheel after the 3rd Item Up For Bi.....er, "Auction". Still a fun watch, though. Thanks, Wink!
Harrington is a good host, but a show where a husband makes all the desicions for a couple? If somebody came along with this in the 50's it might have flown but in the mid 70's they were already skating on thin ice. Also I can tell this show has Lyn Bolen all over it, a show about shopping in 1974! We all know what she was shopping for and I'm sure Mssrs. Woolery and Sajak are glad she didn't pick this up!
What an incomprehensible mess. Like, what impact can the bidding partner even have on the game? It's the dumbest possible way of doing "closest without going over" I've ever seen.
I know this show is from another time but how sexist could it be? In the interview portion, he only spoke to the men. The gameplay involves the men controlling all the money. The man is allowed to overrule the woman as the final portion of the bonus round. Good God.
Theme is Maynard Ferguson's rendition of "Theme from Shaft" off his 1972 album M.F. Horn Two -- the same album also has "Give It One," which Griffin used on the Wheel pilots in 1974.
If it were done as a series, I'd replace that with a rendition of "Hey Big Spender."
A game show with Schneider and the Theme from Shaft…gotta love the 70s!
And Johnny Jacobs.
R.I.P. Pat Harrington a.k.a. "Schneider" from One Day at a Time
We miss you, Pat.
that was a great character, but I prefer him more as Guido Panzini

One of the models was working on another show as this was being taped.
Jane Nelson sure got around, didn't she?
@@marcpower4167 also she was a model on fun factory with Bobby van
This is the earliest show of any kind I have seen that used a wireless mic!
Mr. Martindale, Mr. Wink, Mr. Winkster Sir; YOU ARE THE MAAAAAN!
This was fun! A few tweaks maybe and this could/should have sold. Thanks for the upload, sir!
Reminiscent of the set on that make believe game show on the old TV Show "Hardcastle & McCormick" that Tom Kennedy hosted known as "Bryce Benson".
2 things I noticed about this unsold game show were:
That 10-second time/decision music would later be used as a cue for the bonus round on WOF when it was introduced in December 1981!

I vaguely remembered seeing this. This was a fun game! Thanks for sharing this! 😆💖
Hey Wink, I honestly never even knew Pat Harrington voiced the animated version of Inspector Clouseau and his sidekick, Deux Deux!
whoa.
This show's so frantic, how DIDN'T it make it on TV?!?! XD
RIGHT?!
Three words: WHEEL OF FORTUNE!!
Too much ripped off from TPIR. Almost felt like the Cullen version
Absolutely beautiful white jacket with matching boots.💖🥳 The 1920's - 1970's had such fun and cute feminine clothing.

Great episode! Have never heard of this show before!

GREAT opening theme
The Rockford Files kind of beat 👊😊👊
Pat Harrington is amazing as a game show host so are you Wink
It's like Price is Right and Newlywed Game combined lol.
more like Give-N-Take without the spinning daisy

I lived through this era and I don't even remember some of these shows. Amazing.
You might not remember a pilot because it might have never aired.

I remembered this show

INSPECTTTTOOOOORRRRRRR!!!!!
4:26 Sound effect later used for the bonus round of Wheel of Fortune (NBC days)
yes that's pat harrington stars in one day at a time hosting the pricing game show called big spenders
Andy is a great contestant!
22:48 - November 23, 2021 - five ounces of gold is worth $9,006! 26:40 - that same squash blossom necklace was offered on Shopper's Bazaar.
Big spenders and price is right have something in common: contestants have to bid the prize items without going over!
I knew that convertible was worth more than the other two. Good move, Andy!
Pat Harrington is pretty good as a host. Imagine if The Price is Right had a bidding round like this
You mean it's pretty similar to the original.
They did- when Bill Cullen hosted.
@@someguy23475 Yeah, my first thought watching a round of this game is that it's a variation of vintage TPIR.
@@accampbell oo LOL o PO o

i love this show
I like Pat Harrington as a game show host. His delivery wasn't ultra polished, but he was very charming and witty.
He would've missed out on playing Schneider on One Day at a Time if this went to series.
That announcer is Johnny Jacobs. It was going to be taped at NBC in Burbank if it were brought to series.
And aired on NBC too, most likely. For many years, Radio Corporation of America (RCA) was NBC's parent company. The first prize package was four RCA TVs :)
Damn I wish this show lasted !!
Pat was the host of “Stump The Stars” in 1962 and, later, the voice of The Inspector in theatrical shorts of the mid- to late 1960s
and this pilot before a year later went on to do one day at a time.

I'll bet Pat hosted this gane show one day at a time... 😏
Newlywed Game Meets Price is Right
Logo design similar to that of "Split Second"...set looks an awful lot like "You Don't Say"...opening theme borrows a clip from "Theme from Shaft".
I think Andy downed a few shots before the taping.
Was that a jazzed up version of the shaft theme lol
Also this is too close to 50s tpir tbh

What year was this?
What year was this taped and was it a pilot or syndicate or network run?
Pilot taped 10/27/74 for NBC. Was not picked up.
Those were 1975 cars.
Pilot for NBC, taped in Burbank.
The card in the beginning said October, 1974. So, it might've been considered to air in late '74 or early '75. I don't know what network, but it looks like it was for either ABC or NBC, seeing as it has that Price is Right feel.
It says at the beginning when they taped it. Look at the card that starts the show. This was a pilot for NBC.
I've always had a soft spot for game shows that have dotted numbers.
Is that Schneider from One day at a time?
Call me crazy but he would've made a pretty good game show host as well!!
Not a bad pilot - but hit a tough market in 1975.
The packing was a bit slow, otheriwse it wasn't too bad of an idea.
Why does this time sound like SHAFT?
If Brick Tamland from Anchorman hosted a game show...
I wonder if tattletales looks like this.
I thought this was produced by Chuck Barris, boy was I wrong!
My guess was Barry-Enright since it was derivative of another show (The Price Is Right) and had Johnny Jacobs announcing.
So, who thought gutter drainage piping was a good game show set?
Actually, it's rather metaphoric.
NBC obviously with those annoying fake audience whistles.
I wonder about the host he looks familiar lol
Andy must do Jerry Lewis impressions on the side!

Love the bonus game but the main game is too repetitive. Feel like with a few tweaks this could work.
